Swansea Creative Focus Advent Calendar
Day Ten: 10/12/2019

For those of us who have easy access to technology, every new breakthrough is a source of excitement. Faster ways to communicate. More efficient, cost-effective ways to share our skills and services. It’s a rollercoaster ride with no end in sight.

What about those who don’t have a ticket? In every city there are people with limited access to communications technology. People with talent and purpose who just need to take that first step on the journey.

Swansea Music Art Digital (MAD) was established in January 2008 with the goal of using technology to drive community engagement forward. From a base at 216 High Street, this thriving Community Interest Company is a focal point of audio-visual projects that give a voice to Swansea residents.

For music projects, the MAD premises offer rehearsal and recording services.

For those who want to keep their finger on the pulse of local events, MAD offers the community news project I AM NEWS, sharing regular updates on local events and activities.

For those seeking training to enhance their digital knowledge, MAD can support everyone from complete novices to capable users who want to polish their skills. Courses in Digital Administration; Technology & Media Production; Music Making; Digital & Organisation Safeguarding add major value for the business community and also offer breakthrough opportunities for individuals, giving them the confidence to make technology work for them. All courses are competitively priced and some can be fully funded and free of charge, depending on individual circumstances.

Swansea MAD has been engaging and supporting the local community for almost twelve years. Twelve years of helping their friends and neighbours take a seat on the rollercoaster. Twelve years of ensuring the people of Swansea don’t need to be left behind.

Thirty years ago, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee created the world wide web, and in a remarkable act of philanthropy he chose to make it free to users. He wanted everyone to share in the excitement of advancement. He wanted technology to be an equalizer. Swansea MAD still do. We think that’s worth celebrating.
