Newly expanded funding scheme prompts former Tata worker to retrain in AI
The UK Government’s Employment and Skills Fund has enabled Ryan Davies, a former Principal Researcher at Tata Steel, to move from redundancy towards a new career in data science. Ryan has started an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of South Wales, with the funding contributing towards tuition fees, essential equipment, and study materials—including a new computer and textbooks. The winning project ‘Nature’s Back in Town’ will develop a strategy to shape urban nature and greenspace in Neath Port Talbot, focusing on the county borough’s most urbanised area, Port Talbot. Work starts on multi-million pound Welsh attraction with gondola and zipline
Swansea Council has disposed of land at Kilvey Hill to help pave the way for a multi-million pound leisure attraction and preparatory work has started onsite. Skyline Enterprises has planning permission to build a gondola lift to a sky swing attached to three towers, a zipline sending riders out on a 1km loop, and luge tracks. There’ll also be a hilltop restaurant, mountain bike routes, walking trails, a play area, a new bridleway and additional greenery. Read more
New Five-Storey Office Scheme Moves Forward in Swansea
Swansea Council has appointed Andrew Scott Ltd to carry out detailed designs and market testing to develop best value for the scheme, planned for an area adjacent to the former St David’s Shopping Centre site. Aimed at accommodating up to 800 people, the development will include a mix of high-quality office accommodation on the upper floors and commercial accommodation including food and beverage or potentially leisure offers on the ground floor. ‘Honeycomb’ footbridge has been installed in Haverfordwest
A new £5.7 million footbridge described as ‘Instagrammable’ has been installed in a major town regeneration project. The striking structure now spans Haverfordwest’s Western Quay and Riverside, forming part of Pembrokeshire County Council’s £25.4 million Heart of Pembrokeshire scheme to revitalise the town centre. Historic Swansea Buildings Set for Transformation
Work is taking place to breathe new life into several more historic buildings in Swansea city centre. Under plans led by the Elysium Gallery, the former JT Morgan building – which has been empty since 2008 – will soon become home to a community arts centre and hub for creative professionals. Led by local non-profit Beacon Cymru in partnership with Easy Living Ltd, plans for the former Castle Cinema building include 30 apartments and new commercial units. Read more

An eye-catching new feature has been installed along Mumbles seafront – lighting up the brand-new look promenade. Festoon lighting has been erected, with around 1,400 bulbs lining the sandy-coloured path. Plans Approved for Wales’s National Institute for Sport and Health
Swansea Council have approved plans for Wales’s National Institute for Sport and Health. Led by Swansea University and part of the Swansea Bay City Deal Campuses project, this new building will replace the pavilion next to the athletics track at the University’s Singleton Campus on Sketty Lane, and once complete, will be a dedicated research and innovation space for sports technology. Pembrokeshire couple open houseplant café in converted greenhouse
A former Pembrokeshire dairy farmer and his wife have opened a new houseplant centre and botanical-themed coffee shop in Pembroke. Kristian and Beckie Howell are behind Vine & Vibe, a new 6,000 sq ft indoor houseplant centre and café designed to bring an inclusive, wellbeing-focused space to the region’s retail and hospitality offering. SAIL research now shaping operational strategy of Welsh ambulance leaders
New insights provided by Swansea University’s award-winning SAIL Databank have helped shape future operational strategy by Welsh ambulance services. The research examined how health information is used and was sparked by a project undertaken as part of the 2023 Population Data Science Summer Internship Programme. Co-author Dr Hywel Turner Evans said: “This is the kind of impact we hope to have – if we’re lucky – at some point in our careers. Universities launch first new UK-wide study of child development in a generation
Swansea University will be playing a key role in the first new UK-wide scientific study of babies in a quarter of a century. The Generation New Era study will follow the lives of more than 30,000 babies born in 2026, during their early years, and potentially beyond. It will provide vital new evidence to answer important scientific and policy questions, informing decisions about early years and childcare services to help improve the lives of parents with young children. Swansea city centre in new initiative to tackle single-use packaging
Funded by Swansea Council’s Swansea project zero team and Swansea BID, 2GoCup’s initiative will see customers pay a small deposit for a durable, reusable cup, which they can return to any participating business for a refund or swapping for a fresh cup. The scheme aims to reduce the thousands of single-use coffee cups that are thrown away each week in the city centre, helping Swansea meet its sustainability goals. Read more

Scare-raising experience promised as Halloween Trail returns to historic castle
Scream Time is promising scares a plenty when it returns to Margam County Park this Halloween. The ‘spooktacular’ experience will have even more scare points and hair-raising moment. Visitors will need to keep their eyes wide open if they don’t want to join the Sandman’s victims, the Sleepwalkers. The terrifying trail will lead visitors into the 19th century haunted castle where creepy nightmare characters lurk in every corner. Read more

Celebrations were in full swing at NPTC Group of Colleges as the Class of 2025 marks an incredible achievement in their A Level and vocational qualifications.
