Inside historic Palace Theatre in Swansea as transformation begins to take shape

Work injecting a new lease of life into an enchanting, historic theatre in Swansea city centre which fell into a dilapidated state after years of misuse have taken a step forward. Earlier this year, it was reported that construction specialists had begun to transform the Grade II-listed Palace Theatre on High Street – and now workers have issued an update on the building’s makeover. Contractors appointed to build £20m facility to help decarbonise metal and steel industry

Contractors have been commissioned to design and build a new £20m facility in Neath Port Talbot which will help decarbonise the metals and steel industry. Led by Neath Port Talbot Council in partnership with Swansea University, SWITCH Harbourside and will be located close to Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant. Morgan Sindall Construction have been commissioned to build the research facility which has been backed by the Swansea Bay City Deal. Read More

Pentre Awel Project takes shape with first steel structure

Bouygues UK and Carmarthenshire County Council have revealed the first steel structure for the landmark Pentre Awel project. This is the first of five buildings and will house education and business development. Pentre Awel is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal (£40 million) and is the largest regeneration scheme in South West Wales. Read More

Redevelopment works at Pembroke Port pave the way for a low carbon future

Significant progress is being made to create a multi-purpose and future energy-ready port in Pembrokeshire that will create a bright and prosperous outlook for current and future generations. Physical works on the Swansea Bay City Deal and EU funded Pembroke Dock Marine project began in earnest last August after a breaking ground ceremony marked the start of the construction of a supersize slipway and new workboat pontoons at Pembroke Port. City’s new employment and living destination taking shape

A new multi-million pound employment, living and innovation destination is starting to take shape. Work is progressing at pace on the 71/72 Kingsway development and nearby ‘living building’ scheme at Picton Yard. The completed building will be seven storeys – two underground and five above ground. Glazing and guard rails are now being installed on the top floor, which will include a green rooftop terrace with views over the city centre and Swansea Bay. Read More

Top chef from Michelin-starred St John’s in London to open Swansea restaurant

The former chef-director of the St John’s restaurant group, Jonathan Woolway, is to open a restaurant in his hometown of Swansea after 15 years working at the iconic ‘nose to tail’ restaurants. With the new venture set for the Swansea Waterfront, Jonathan is sharing little detail currently, but with his experience and heavy involvement at St John in cooking, teaching, and overseeing quality and development, it’s sure to be a must for dining aficionados. The health and fitness hub concept for Mumbles whose creator wants to get people talking

A design engineer from Mumbles has come up with an idea which he thinks could revitalise land by the seafront and benefit the community. Grant Parry envisages a health and fitness hub in Mumbles incorporating a gym – potentially a community-run one – fitness studios, outdoor exercise spaces, a cafe, three separate outbuildings for retail or hospitality use, a small car park, and some greenery. New owner takes the reins at Solo, Mumbles

Solo clothes shop has a new owner. Following the retirement of founder Lynne Kettles, Lynne’s long-time friend Helen Bowden has taken over the business. The new role is a change of direction for Helen, whose previous career spans the charity sector and media. She was station director at Swansea Sound/The Wave and content editor at BBC Radio Wales, and promoted the region as Chief Executive of Swansea Bay Futures and a founder of 4theRegion. Read More

New guest accommodation and restaurant to showcase Pembrokeshire with £1.24 million investment by Visit Wales and the Development Bank of Wales

Work on the redevelopment of Wales’ oldest golf club is nearing completion with new four star guest accommodation and a restaurant due to open at the end of September. The £1.7m investment is set to transform Tenby Golf Club with a state-of-the-art clubhouse, an extra five dormy style bedrooms for groups of golfers, new ten-bedroom boutique guest accommodation, and a fine dining restaurant that will be headed-up by renowned chef Duncan Barham. UWTSD’s Dr Ross Head and the team at the Cerebra Innovation Centre have helped Rhys discover the thrill of paddle boarding with a clever adaptation! Teenager Rhys has a rare, progressive genetic condition which affects his extremities and physical strength. While he has tried surfing, and enjoys it when the sea is calm, he finds getting wet and cold is difficult for him. Plans for natural products research facility in Swansea secures major funding

Plans for a facility dedicated to the research of natural substances found in bacteria, fungi and plants in Swansea has received over half a million pounds in government funding. Swansea University has won £587,000 from Swansea Council for its Natural Products BioHUB project. The project includes the development of a multi-use hub offering access to natural product research and innovation as well as supporting businesses specialising in the sector. Read More

VR Experts Join Forces to Create Groundbreaking Health Training

A Welsh virtual reality company Rescape has teamed up with Swansea University and Hywel Dda University Health Board to deliver pioneering healthcare training. The project places Swansea University, its partners and Wales at the cutting edge of new technologies to deliver solutions that make the NHS safer, utilise resources more effectively, support flexible and innovative training as well as making strides towards net zero. Swansea University staff are celebrating after earning the Fairtrade University Award for the first time in five years. The award recognises institutions which have embedded ethical and sustainable practices throughout their curriculum, procurement, research and campaigns. Judges look at everything from a university’s procurement and retail systems through to catering, campaigning and influencing. Read More

The Neath Port Talbot Food Partnership is preparing a new issue of the NPT Local Food Directory, updated with details of great local producers and businesses.  It’s part of a campaign to encourage people to buy local food this autumn/winter, and will showcase all those who are working towards our shared goal of a local, sustainable and fair food system for Neath Port Talbot! Clearance Project Ensures Student Village Leaves Behind a Green Legacy

Thousands of Swansea University students called Hendrefoilan Student Village home for more than half a century. But although it’s the end of the line for the student village, the contents of its 228 flats and houses are beginning a new chapter. The Decant Project saw the University team up with David Phillips Furniture Ltd to support local charities and the wider community by ensuring as many of the furnishings as possible were reused and recycled. Read More

Plans for major hydrogen fuel generation scheme submitted to council

H2 Energy Ecosystem UK is seeking permission for an electrolysis hydrogen generation facility in Milford Haven. The 20MW plant would generate five tonnes of hydrogen a day, but has consent for up to 20 tonnes, utilising electricity from new and existing UK windfarms. The technology splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, producing hydrogen gas which can be used for fuel cells in cars, fuel for engines and turbines, and liquid fuel for planes and lorries. New milk processing facility for Pembrokeshire Creamery to create jobs

The countdown has begun to a new state-of-the-art liquid milk processing facility which is expected to open in the first quarter of 2024. This means supermarkets can offer their customers milk both sourced and bottled in Wales. By removing the need for Welsh milk to be transported to bottling plants in England, Pembrokeshire Creamery will be able to reduce food miles and increase supply chain efficiency. Read More

Event organisers invited to ‘join forces’ for festival

Event organisers in Neath Port Talbot are being invited to affiliate their own events with the 2023 Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s Armed Forces Festival, which takes place in October and November. This year’s festival will include a concert at the Princess Royal Theatre on Friday 27th October and an information event in the Aberafan Shopping Centre with a flag raising ceremony on Saturday 28th October. Striking ‘heart of steel’ unveiled in grounds of stunning Welsh castle

Visitors to Port Talbot’s Margam Country Park will be able to see themselves reflected in the untamed, dramatic panorama reflected in the structure’s brushed steel surface. With reflections of Margam’s spectacular castle and grounds, the rolling hills of the surrounding valleys, the faraway steelworks, and horizon line of Aberavon Beach, the Heart of Steel statue arrived overnight and faces the imposing castle. Traders from all over Europe expected to flock to historic Neath fair

The final arrangements are being put in place for Neath’s iconic Great September Fair which has been running for more than 700 years – making it one of the oldest chartered fairs in Europe. The historic fair is made up of two main events, the fun fair (at Milland Road Car Park) and the street fair (in the town centre streets). The 2023 Street Fair, which this year will feature approximately 80 stalls, will run from Wednesday, September 13 – 16. Read More

New Sculpture Unveiled at Crymlyn Burrows Celebrating Biodiversity and Local Community

A new sculpture has been installed at Crymlyn Burrows, home to Swansea University’s Bay Campus, to celebrate the wildlife and diversity of the protected coastal site and its importance to the local community. Crafted by Artist Blacksmith James Eifion Thomas, the sculpture serves as a gateway to this protected site, incorporating key elements of the landscape and symbolising the commitment to preserve its habitat for people and wildlife long into the future. Inspiring the Next Generation of Manufacturing Leaders in South Wales

School pupils recently had the chance to learn about sustainability and manufacturing at an event at Swansea University. 80 KS3 students from Llangatwg Community School, Bryn Celynnog School, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community, Olchfa School and Willows High School learnt about fossils fuels, decarbonisation and the circular economy. They also designed and built a bridge where the cost and carbon footprint of every component had to be considered. Read More

Alumni Case Study: Zoe Antrobus from 4theRegion

Great to see our Director Zoe Antrobus featured as ION leadership’s latest alumni case study! Zoe took part in the ILM Level 5 Leading Growth programme during the pandemic, with all of the masterclasses, except the final graduation ceremony, taking place online. Wolfson Foundation Grant Boosts Semiconductor R&D

Swansea University has received a major boost to its Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM), creating the semiconductor technologies used in almost every modern high-tech device. The award will support the design, procurement, and deployment of a unique and powerful ‘cluster instrument’, housed at CISM and part of a highly ambitious project to for a nationally significant Semiconductor Analytical Suite for researchers and industrial partners. Stellar Line-Up of Authors Announced for Swansea Children’s Literature Festival

A fantastic line-up of authors at the first Children’s Literary Festival held at the National Waterfront Museum on 7-8 October has been announced. More than thirty renowned children’s authors from Wales and across the UK will be participating in this free event of storytelling, magic, music and drama with sessions in both English and Welsh. The aim is to enable children of all ages to access the wonderful world of words so they can reach their full potential. Read More
