Currently Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which extends around the Pembrokeshire coast and includes the Milford Haven waterway to tidal limits, is in an unfavourable condition.

The waterway has failed to meet ‘good’ status which is required for Water Framework Directive compliance. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen levels in the waterway are too high and a recently published compliance assessment report revealed 67% of waterbodies within the Cleddau River SAC, which flows into the Milford Haven Water Waterway, failed to meet target phosphate levels.

Action that needs to be taken to reach good status is outlined in the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan (RBMP). This plan is being updated and a consultation is open where we’re asking people to consider the issues impacting the water environment in the Western Wales river basin district. You have until 22 June 2021 to have your say on the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan consultation.
