Bouygues UK and Carmarthenshire County Council celebrate new Pentre Awel hoarding designed by Coleg Sir Gâr students

Carmarthenshire Council and Bouygues UK held an event to celebrate brand new hoardings at the multi-million-pound development Pentre Awel, designed by students at Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gâr. The project has a significant focus on community benefits and local college students were tasked with designing new hoardings for the site which set out how Pentre Awel is meeting the 7 wellbeing goals of the Well-being of Future Generations Act. Ammanford Employers team up with Education to deliver real world of work experience

The RLSP’s Skills and Talent Programme is excited to be in collaboration with Dyffryn Amman School in Ammanford and launched a pilot work experience programme for Year 10 pupils in September. This innovative project aims to provide ongoing, meaningful work experience over a six-week period with young people working on a real life problem in the work place. Pembrokeshire County Council in partnership with the new Haverfordwest Castle CIO has been advised by the National Lottery Heritage Fund of its success at Round 1 (Development Phase) of its bid to secure £2.68m towards the redevelopment of Haverfordwest Castle. The Council is seeking to appoint experienced consultants to provide an access audit, and activity and education, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, and business plans.

Swansea Council seeks suitably qualified contractors to provide the collection and reprocessing of mixed paper, card and cardboard, groundworks in Clydach and Townhill, an external insulation and render system, renewables, re-roofing and window renewal, 500 laptops, seven 4.5 tonne GVW compact roadsweepers and supporting service, maintenance and repairs, front and back composite doors, roofing works, and windows and doors.

Future Generations Menu – Primary School Recipe File Development

This contract from Carmarthenshire Council is for the development of a primary recipe file fully compliant with The Healthy Eating in Schools (Nutritional Standards and Requirements) (Wales) Regulations 2013 and Healthy Eating in Maintained Schools guidance. Work underway to transform former Debenhams building in Carmarthen into huge entertainment centre and gym

Work has officially started inside the building, with lead contractor Bouygues UK on site. The building will be “a state-of-the-art health and wellbeing Hwb that includes educational facilities, a unique leisure offer and a high-spec family entertainment centre”. The “Hwb” will offer people community health services and customer services, a 24-hour gym, flexible fitness suites, adventure golf, a soft play area, go karting and access to education. Read More

Cambrian Place Refurbishment: A New Chapter for Swansea’s Historic Landmark

Dating back to 1820, Cambrian Place is one of Swansea’s oldest remaining streets, one of just a handful in the city centre to survive bombing in World War Two. Pobl Group will commence work this month on a 74-week refurbishment programme to secure a long-term sustainable future for this prominent building. In line with Pobl’s commitment to investing in local communities, Swansea based John Weaver Contractors have been appointed to carry out the work. Read More

New block of flats is being built overlooking river and marina

The 104 flats off Kings Road will be managed by housing association Coastal Housing Group and rented to people at below market rates. The four-to-six-storey block overlooking the River Tawe and Swansea Marina will feature a ground-floor commercial premises along with 93 car parking spaces and bike parking. Kelvin Rees, Coastal Housing’s head of development, said the affordable flats were in “an incredible location” in the heart of Swansea’s waterfront area. Read More

Restaurants, cafes and shops plan for historic Swansea site

There are plans to transform Vivian and Musgrave Engine Houses, and the V&S No.1 Locomotive Shed at the Hafod Morfa Copperworks site. The Musgrave structure contains the rare Musgrave Engine, the last of its kind in the UK. The engine’s external elements will have a covered shelter so the machinery can be restored in future. Once finished, the engine houses will be suitable for a wide variety of uses, like restaurants and cafes, exhibition-style spaces and shops. Read More

‘We want Swansea to be the skateboarding capital of Wales’

Addressing a cabinet meeting, Cllr Robert Francis-Davies said consultants commissioned by the council had indicated that a network of new schemes would cost around £2.7 million. He said “We can make sure then that every child, or every adult as well, will be able to get access to a pump track or skateboarding within a two-mile radius of wherever you live in Swansea. My ambition is to make Swansea the skateboarding, small-wheeled capital of Wales.” Read More

Date set for reopening of iconic Swansea landmark after amazing restoration

Tramshed Tech chief executive Louise Harris said “This historic landmark is treasured by the local community and has been a landmark in Swansea for over a century.” The 136-year-old Palace Theatre will have flexible workspace with meeting rooms and studios. The theatre stage will be an event space and co-working area with a cafe on the ground floor. Original features, such as the iron balcony, have been retained and the exterior is largely as it was in its pomp. Read More

Carmarthenshire Celebrates 60% Gigabit Connectivity

Better broadband is now in place for more than half of the county with aspirations from Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme to continue that connectivity journey further. Carmarthenshire, a predominantly rural part of Wales, is proud to announce a significant milestone in its journey to getting better broadband.  60% of homes and businesses in the county can now access full fibre broadband compared to 25% in 2021. The new restaurant where you can eat incredible breakfast and burgers at a picturesque forest park

The Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre has re-opened to members of the public after its closure earlier this year. The new owners are promising a upmarket café, restaurant, and takeaway at the Afan Valley attraction which is also set to boast a campsite complete with electric hook-ups for camper vans. The site is being opened by up-and-coming chef Lloyd Ryland and entrepreneur Ryan Thomas with the centre’s new restaurant known as Base at Afan Forest Park. Read More

Raj Kitchen becomes hub for the Swansea community

Well known chef Bitabrata Chowdhury is expanding his Swansea city centre eatery into a hub for the community. Already established as one of the top restaurants in the area, Raj Kitchen is now offering a space for people to come and learn Indian cookery skills working hands on with chefs in an authentic kitchen experience. The move has been supported by a five-figure Fast Track  Loan from Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE to Mr Chowdhury’s business, The Food Zone. Read More

Swansea University hosts major conference for experts in greener methods of pest control

Over 200 experts in pest management gathered at Swansea University from 2-4 September for a major conference to encourage innovation in the field. With the focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the event was jointly organised by IBMA, UK and Swansea University’s Natural Products BioHUB. The event spotlighted new opportunities in crop protection and the sustainable management of insect vectors that transmit diseases affecting humans and animals. Read More

Swansea Bay delivers new 10-minute MS injection in UK first

A Swansea mum has become the first person in the UK to receive a new 10-minute injection to help prevent the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Emma Cullen previously had to undergo an intravenous (IV) infusion twice a year which would take up to four hours during each visit. But the medication ocrelizumab, which helps to prevent relapses and slow the progression of MS, has now been approved to be given via an under-the-skin injection. Read More

New research from Swansea University shines a light on how solar power and farming can coexist

Scientists from Swansea University have developed a new tool to help identify optimal photovoltaic (PV) materials capable of maximising crop growth while generating solar power. By optimising the combination of solar panels and agriculture, agrivoltaics has the potential to significantly contribute to the decarbonisation of the agricultural sector. This approach not only generates clean energy but also enhances food security. Read More

Swansea wins coveted Sustainable Food Place Bronze award

The award recognises Bwyd Abertawe’s work to promote healthy, sustainable and local food and to tackle some of today’s greatest social challenges; from food poverty and diet-related ill-health, to the disappearance of family farms and the loss of independent food retailers. Read More

Rural Carmarthenshire Circular Economy Learning

Over the past few months staff at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Carmarthen Business School have been engaged in a shared prosperity rural innovation fund project in rural Carmarthenshire: ‘Identifying the Challenges for Enhancing Rural Resilience through the Circular Economy (CE)’ which aims to address the need for a move towards a Green economy by increasing business resilience and sustainability in rural areas. Bluestone Unveils Three-Hectare Solar Farm to Power National Park Resort

The solar farm will power a third of the Bluestone National Park Resort. The launch forms an integral part of Bluestone’s £30m investment strategy to expand its facilities while championing sustainability projects to further protect and enhance the local area. The solar farm, with a lifespan of 40 years, aims to secure the long-term viability of Bluestone. It is expected to generate around 3,000 mwh of electricity a year, which could power up to 1,200 homes. New scheme aims to increase amount of local produce used in schools and care homes

Having taken over the running of Bremenda Isaf, a 100-acre Carmarthenshire Council farm, the Food Systems Development Project is using climate and nature-friendly farming practices to grow a range of different vegetables that will make their way into school and care home meals, ensuring that some of the county’s youngest and eldest residents are benefiting from locally grown, high quality, fresh produce. Support group Sadie’s Butterflies is doing amazing work to create acceptance, community, and safety for LGBTQ+ people in Swansea. Its organiser, Donna Curnock, told South West Wales Connected why its work is so essential. Every Wednesday morning, upstairs in Coast Café in Swansea Marina, a wide range of people meet for tea and a chat. There are professionals, retired people, refugees, students – the list goes on. Beware of the scariest ghosts in Wales as ‘Fright Nights’ arrive at Margam Country Park this autumn

The haunted trail begins in the ruins in the gardens where you will meet the seven-foot Cistercian monks. Tiptoe through the bone yard so you don’t wake up the skeletons and into the petrified forest where you may bump into the zombie gamekeeper. The trail continues into the castle, where vampires, bats and the lady in white all reside – it is thought to be one of the most haunted places in the UK. Swansea Science Festival returns for 2024

The much-anticipated Swansea Science Festival is back, promising an exhilarating journey into the fascinating world of science this October half-term. Out of 122 institutions ranked in the guide, Swansea holds 29th place overall in the UK. UWTSD is celebrating success in two national newspaper University league tables. Swansea named Welsh University of the Year 2025

Swansea University has been named The Times and The Sunday Times’ Welsh University of the Year 2025. The guide also ranks Swansea 37th in the UK, up four places from last year. According to the guide, Swansea has taken the honour thanks to its consistent focus on career-building, a seafront student experience, and a four-place year-on-year rise. It also broke into the top 300 QS World University Rankings with a leap of 118 places earlier this year. Read More

Port Talbot Skills Academy pledges to retrain 300 ex-steelworkers

Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE has supported a Port Talbot welding skills academy aiming to retrain 300 ex-steelworkers and provide the platform to eventually create more than 50 new jobs. UKSE has provided a six-figure loan to local engineering contractor JES which is greatly increasing the capacity of its training centre. The firm has been a key contractor to the Tata Steel works, their business relationship stretching back some 40 years. Read More

New funding to help Technocamps boost local digital skills

Technocamps at Swansea University has received a significant funding boost from local authorities in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot to deliver innovative digital skills training to young people and adults. The funding, totalling over £700,000, will be used to provide a wide range of courses in both English and Welsh, aimed at improving digital literacy in the region. Read More

Bike hire scheme returns with brand-new look

Swansea University Cycles are getting ready to hit the road, once again offering an easy and affordable way to travel across the city. Swansea University has teamed up with nextbike, powered by Tier, and Swansea Council, to introduce 100 brand new bikes over the coming weeks to Swansea’s bike hire network. The bikes, featuring new University branding, boast improved locking systems and GPS tracking. Read More

Top 100 honour for Hannah

Gower College Swansea’s Hannah Pearce has been named as one of the CITB’s Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction for 2024. In her role as Learning Area Manager for Built Environment, Hannah has actively advocated for greater female participation in the construction industries. Since she joined the College in 2022, the department has made significant advances in educational outreach and industry partnerships. Read More

“It’s made me more confident” – 137 local young people graduate from Step Up programme for widening access to university

More than 100 young people from schools and colleges across South West Wales have celebrated their graduation from the Step Up to Swansea Programme, at a special ceremony in front of their families and friends at Swansea University’s Great Hall.
