Approval has been granted for the residential development of 35 apartments and eight townhouses and associated works. The 43 units would be served by 29 car parking spaces within the courtyard area. The development, brought forward by housing association Pobl, will be 100 per cent social rent. Read More

SWANSEA BAY CITY DEAL

Contractors appointed to build £20m SWITCH facility

Morgan Sindall Construction has been commissioned to design and build a new £20m Swansea Bay City Deal backed facility in Neath Port Talbot which will help industry decarbonise. Led by Neath Port Talbot Council in partnership with Swansea University, SWITCH Harbourside, located close to Tata Steel’s Port Talbot plant, will be a research facility for decarbonising the metals and steel industry. Pentre Awel project’s site team get full marks in CCS assessment

Bouygues UK’s site team at Pentre Awel has received top marks in its first Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) assessment, honouring the projects’ commitment to sustainability and social value. The multi-million-pound Pentre Awel development will bring together life science and business innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities. It is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal and is the largest regeneration scheme in South West Wales. Read More

META starts collecting metocean data at one of its tidal test sites

META is the only pre-consented, pre-commercial test facility of its kind in Wales. Funded through the Swansea Bay City Deal and a keystone partner of the Pembroke Dock Marine Project, META offers testing in real sea conditions for wave, tidal and floating offshore wind (FLOW) technology in the Milford Haven Waterway, alongside world class port, engineering and manufacturing facilities. Welsh restaurant added to Michelin Guide just four months after opening at new location

A restaurant where local ingredients are foraged and served in an intimate setting has been named in the Michelin Guide just four months after reopening. Annwn, run by chef Matt Powell and his partner Naomi, quickly became one of Wales’ top foodie spots, but had to close its original premises in Lawrenny. It soon found a new home in Narberth and has continued to be popular for its quality meals made from seasonal, local and sustainable ingredients. Read More

New Method for Purifying Drinking Water Could be Used in Disaster Zones

A new method of converting seawater into drinking water, which could be useful in disaster zones where there is limited electrical power, has been developed by a team of scientists including a Swansea University expert. Read More

Building a Sustainable Future: Pioneers in South West Wales Are Leading the Way

In the run up to the 4theRegion Green Economy Conference on 22nd November, we hosted the Sustainable Buildings & Construction Roundtable on 27th September, to explore some of the key talking points relating to sustainable construction and development. This gathering of thought leaders and experts in South West Wales highlighted some of the great work taking place in our region, towards a greener and more sustainable future in the construction industry. New plant will double Wales’ plastic reprocessing capacity

A £45 million investment is set to more than double Wales’ plastic reprocessing capacity and create over 100 new jobs at the former Toyoda Gosei factory in Swansea. Jayplas will develop an advanced facility capable of processing at least 100,000 tonnes of flexible and rigid plastics a year. Once fully operational, it will reduce the carbon footprint of Wales by around 150,000 tonnes per year, the equivalent of taking 120,000 cars off the road. Read More

Council and Egni Co-op work together to tackle climate change

Pembrokeshire County Council has awarded a contract for the installation of rooftop solar panels on 20 local schools and leisure centres to Welsh social enterprise, Egni Co-op. It’s estimated that the solar panels will prevent the emission of approximately 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and should save the schools and leisure centres £180,000 per year in energy costs. Project is bearing the fruit – and veg – of its labour by unearthing first harvest

A project aiming to supply Morriston Hospital with fruit and vegetables has moved a step closer after its first harvest of crops. Not-for-profit organisation Cae Felin CSA is growing crops on land owned by the health board near the hospital. Staff have been volunteering to help the CSA work towards its long-term goal of growing fruit and veg for patient meals in Morriston Hospital, selling food boxes and also providing them for low income and deprived areas. A place that changed the world: a visit to Neath Abbey Ironworks

Neath Abbey Ironworks is a unique and beautiful historic site. Peter Richards, secretary of The Friends of Neath Abbey Iron Company, gave South West Wales Connected a guided tour. You don’t get much closer to our rail network than Neath Abbey Ironworks: a viaduct designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel carries the mainline from London right over the site. It’s just one of many remarkable architectural features at the Ironworks. Read More

Swansea Fringe Festival 2023: Line up, dates, venues and how to get tickets for the live music and comedy event

Get ready for three days of music, comedy, poetry and theatre performances as Swansea’s popular Fringe Festival returns this month. Co-organiser Josh David-Read said: “We are really proud of this year’s line-up, which will see heavyweight acts like The Bug Club, Edie Bens, Gallops and Brecon playing on the same bills as the bands and artists who’ve come through the application route. Some of these acts tour globally but they all have a strong link to Wales.” Read More

Star Wars themed mural transforms subway in Welsh town

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, (well South West Wales actually), there was a street artist for whom the force was strong. One of Wales’ leading street artists Steve ‘Jenks’ Jenkins has spent the last six months creating an out of this world Star Wars inspired mural that has turned a neglected subway in Llanelli into a quirky sci-fi masterpiece. Medieval gold ring among treasure found on Gower

Two treasure finds, including a medieval gold finger-ring and a post-medieval silver seal-matrix have been found on the Gower Peninsula. The cast gold ring has an octagonal hollow bezel, with the remains of a dark red cabochon stone setting, probably garnet. Emma Williams, Collections & Access Officer at Swansea Museum said: “These finds will make a really wonderful addition to the museum’s collections and will help us to tell more of Swansea’s story.” Read More

Blue Lagoon in Pembrokeshire closes early with public access halted to protect baby seals

About half the world’s population of grey seal breed on our coastline and the total number in west Wales, mostly Pembrokeshire, is estimated to be about 5,000, with some 1,400 pups being born each year. The breeding season is vital for the seal colonies in Pembrokeshire and visitors are asked not to access the Blue Lagoon and follow the guidelines laid out by the Seal Alliance and Pembrokeshire Marine Code when on the coastal path. Luminate light trail confirmed for return to Margam Park with dates and ticket details announced

Luminate is a spectacular trail which lights up its surroundings within the beautiful Margam Country Park. The event will officially return on November 22 and will be there until December 31. The trail takes between an hour to an hour and a half to complete and organisers say that the route has been “carefully redesigned for 2023”, retaining last year’s highlights but reimagined to include some new additions with the hopes of ensuring this year is the best yet. Russell Kane to headline Carmarthen Festival of Comedy

The multi-award-winning comedian and presenter will perform in the top slot at the Festival of Comedy at the town’s showground at Nantyci. Organisers The Giggling Goat said: “After three incredible years in Newport, the Festival of Comedy is coming to West Wales, landing in Carmarthen showground on Friday, October, 27. “We’re bringing the cream of the crop of British comedy to Carmarthen.”Read More

Welsh language music festival returns to Swansea

A project, which aims to boost the Welsh language music scene in Swansea, returns for a second year this autumn. Last year over 4,000 people attended the 28 events featuring performances by artists using the Welsh language in their work. Regular gigs will be staged in city centre venues, including Tŷ Tawe, The Bunkhouse, and the Elysium until December. Read More

You can camp at a stunning Gower castle after dancing the night away at a barn dance

The grounds of a Swansea castle will become the breathtaking destination for a “magical one-night-only” barn dance event. The event taking place at Weobley Castle Farm Barn on Saturday, October 7, includes the option to camp overnight following an evening of live music, dancing and drinks. Read More

Be You, Be Creative collaborative mural brightens campus

The brightly coloured mural has been painted at Swansea College of Art’s Dynevor Campus. Be You, Be Creative was designed by then-student, now recent graduate Huw Edwards, who studied BA Graphic Design at UWTSD. As part of his third year independent project, he wanted to communicate to prospective students that creative careers and education programmes can be pursued without fear, shame or judgement, and there is plenty of support available. Rejoining Horizon Europe is Good News, says Vice-Chancellor

Professor Paul Boyle, Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University, welcomes the news that the UK is rejoining the EU’s £80 billion Horizon research programme: “Rejoining Horizon Europe is exceptionally good news, which researchers and scientists in Swansea University and across Wales will have been waiting for. Horizon is the largest research and innovation collaboration in the world, and it is essential that Welsh scientists and researchers can engage with it.” Read More

Swansea University Excels in University Rankings

We’re pleased to announce that Swansea University has been named as one of the top universities in Europe, according to the first ever edition of the QS World University Ranking Europe 2024! The results see them placed 103rd overall and 31st in the UK. And that’s not all! They’ve also been ranked 25th in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2024 – making them once again the top university in Wales!
