Major regeneration scheme secures new £750k in grants

A council project to bring new life to the historic Hafod-Morfa Copperworks has secured an extra £750,000 in grant support. The scheme, that’s due to see Welsh distillery Penderyn open an attraction in the site’s disused powerhouse next year, will also help the council redevelop other under-used areas of the Lower Swansea Valley. Read More

Swansea Civic Centre transformation to be modelled on Plymouth waterfront

A former Navy building in Plymouth which has been transformed into shops, restaurants, bars, visitor accommodation and art studios will be the model for Swansea’s Civic Centre site when it is redeveloped. The waterside Plymouth complex has been redeveloped by Urban Splash – the company Swansea Council has appointed to transform seven sites in the city. One of the first of these seven will be the 17-acre Civic Centre site, although it’s still early days. Read More

Masterplan launched to transform Swansea community

The Penderi Regeneration Scheme will see a large and long-term investment into the area, four miles from Swansea city centre, with the plans shaped by the community itself. Over 350 households in the area proactively participated in the consultation process. Active and influential community groups and organisations have also given their views and feedback, such as Blaenymaes Drop-in Centre Ty Fforest Hub and Swansea Community Farm. Read More

Swansea City explore plans for a hotel at stadium with dedicated fan zone also considered

Speaking at a fans’ forum at the stadium last week, chief executive Julian Winter revealed the Swans have a potential partner interested in helping the club to create a purpose-built hotel adjacent to their home. Read More

Economy Minister impressed by the £130m City Deal project that will boost the Sports and Medical Technology sectors

Led by Swansea University, and in partnership with Swansea Council, Swansea Bay University Health Board, Hywel Dda University Health Board, A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH) Partnership and key private sector partners, the Campuses project it is the perfect collaboration between businesses, academia and the government. School pupils star in music video to celebrate Pembroke Dock’s future in sustainable energy

The community of Pembroke Dock has come together to create a digital legacy celebrating a ground breaking £60 million project happening right in the heart of their community. The Port of Milford Haven, Marine Energy Wales, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Celtic Sea Power commissioned the Aloud Charity to develop a music video featuring local school pupils and members of the community. Digital and green funding available for Swansea businesses

Ranging from £500 to £1500, the Swansea Council grants are aimed at supporting existing businesses which are looking to grow. Schemes that could be covered by the Green Innovation Grant include investment in measures like LED lighting that reduce energy usage. Creation of a first-time website, development of an existing website or support with online marketing campaigns are among the areas potentially eligible for a Digital Development Grant. Read More

The infamous Swansea valley nightclub that sold drinks for 10p and why its now offering something very different

You’ll struggle to get an alcopop from the bar now as it’s been transformed into Paradise Coffee Shop, which leads into a martial arts training academy and wellbeing area. The renovation work was done on a tight budget which explains the quirky features. An old bar is tucked behind a fighting ring and nightclub booths stand next to punching bags and gym equipment. Cu Mumbles opened on the top floor of Castleton Walk Arcade last month and is quickly gaining a reputation as being the place to go for a night out with friends or to celebrate a birthday or special event. Cu Mumbles takes its name from its copper decor – Cu is the symbol for the chemical element copper – and the emphasis on the venue as a place to catch up with friends and loved ones, with Cu Mumbles meaning “see you [in] Mumbles”. Research on Cancer and on Concussion in Women’s Rugby to Benefit from Livery Company Awards

Two Swansea University researchers in sport and exercise sciences have won travel scholarships from the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales, which will allow them to further their research. Freja Petrie researches ways of reducing concussion in women’s rugby and Rachael Kemp is investigating the effects of exercise on cancer cell growth and migration. Read More

Trampoline park to give toddlers free breakfast and lunch to help parents with the cost of living crisis

A popular Swansea family attraction is doing its bit to help parents amidst the cost of living crisis by offering free meals for children. Limitless Trampoline Inflatable Park, located along the city’s Langdon Road, has been a big hit since it opened six years ago as a family-run business. Free breakfast and lunch is to be served up to youngsters who visit the facility in a move it is hoped will offer a helping hand to the community. Read More

Connect with nature this autumn through Acorn Antics

Natural Resources Wales are asking education and learning groups from across Wales to get outside this autumn and collect acorns. They run the Acorn Antics campaign to highlight the importance of growing more trees from locally sourced seeds. The acorns that are collected help them grow native trees whilst encouraging learners big and small to get outside in the fresh autumnal air and connect with the Welsh natural environment. Read More

Environment hero helps to keep Carmarthenshire clean

A young volunteer has been praised by Carmarthenshire County Council for his environmental work in the Whitland area. 10-year-old Leon litter picks his local area every day, helping to keep the area clean and tidy. As a reward for his fantastic work Leon was invited on a behind the scenes tour of Nantycaws recycling centre and Canolfan Eto. Read More

Council prepares Dark Sky application for Gower

If successful, Gower will gain “international dark sky communities” status – one of five dark sky designations. This would demonstrate that the area has relevant outdoor lighting guidance and makes an effort to educate people about the importance of dark skies. Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives by rewarding teams with points and prizes the further they walk, cycle and roll. The game brings a competitive element to physical activity, but more than that, unites communities, helps people get to know their local area, reduces carbon emissions and improves both physical activity and mental health. Swansea hosts multi-venue art exhibition celebrating creativity in the city

The collaboration between Swansea College of Art, Glynn Vivian Gallery, GS Artists, Mission Gallery and Elysium brings together the past and present of Swansea’s creative community and recognises the important collaborations between local art institutions over the past centuries. Menter Iaith Abertawe, Swansea’s Welsh language initiative, has revealed details of a new project which will see a series of Welsh language, bilingual and multilingual live music events staged across Swansea over the course of the next two years. The project aims to build on the current Welsh language music scene in the city, offering a regular stage for artists from the area and beyond. Read More

Wales Contemporary 2022 Exhibition

Now in its third year, the prestigious Wales Contemporary/Cymru Gyfoes international art competition returns to Milford Waterfront this autumn. This year’s competition has attracted nearly 2,000 entries from over 40 countries, including Japan, Canada, the USA, Spain and of course, Wales. Visitors will be able to view 144 final selected works during the exhibition at the Waterfront Gallery until 5th November. Read More

Blue Gem Wind supports Pembrokeshire college with new Pearson BTEC Engineering Course

Blue Gem Wind are supporting Pembrokeshire College with a BTEC Engineering course aimed at providing a pathway to renewables for 14-16 year-olds. The new course, which begins in September, will be delivered in partnership with other local renewable energy companies and is supported by the Skills and Talent strand of the Swansea Bay City Deal. The historical Clydach chapel that’s been transformed into a dance school to give young people new opportunities

NSDC dance school’s new venue is Salem Fardre Methodist Chapel, a post-medieval chapel which was built in the village in 1871. Dance teacher Natalie Salter already runs a well-established dance school in Pontardawe and puts on classes in Llandarcy but has always wanted to bring dance to her local community. The new dance school will offer dance and fitness classes for all ages including street, commercial, tap, modern jazz, musical theatre and Zumba. Swansea University are delighted to have retained their position as a UK top 30 university in the latest Guardian University Guide! They have been ranked 26th in the UK, top in Wales, 15th for overall student satisfaction, and 28th for teaching. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David are ranked joint 74th overall, and 1st in Wales for Film and Photography, Product Design, Graphic Design, Fine Art, and Education.
