Installation of gold-coloured panels nears completion at arena
Installation of all gold-coloured panels surrounding Swansea Arena is now just about complete. Over 1,600 of the panels have been installed – each equipped with LED lights to enable the hosting of displays around the attraction. It’s another milestone for the £135m Copr Bay phase one district, which is being developed by Swansea Council and advised by development managers RivingtonHark. Read More
Work set to start on site at Swansea city centre local services hub
A big step is about to be taken in the creation of a new central Swansea location for the city’s main library and other key services. Contractors have begun preparatory work in the former BHS/What! building. In under two years it is due to be a local services hub. A new delivery team has been given conditional planning approval to take forward the transformational Afan Valley leisure resort project which could create hundreds of jobs and provide significant social and environmental benefits for communities in the area. Eco pop-up shop proves successful at Swansea’s Quadrant shopping centre
Swansea’s Quadrant Shopping Centre took part in a eco-shop trial last month at one of its empty retail units. The Little Green Shop opened in a former mobile phone shop unit. The three week opening slot allowed Swansea Environment Centre to showcase its ethical goods, refills and unique items, along with its environmental vision to a new audience of shoppers in the heart of the city centre. The pop-up is part of a wider project run by Urban Foundry. Read More
£1.7 billion Blue Eden project announced for Swansea
A £1.7 billion project creating thousands of well-paid jobs and placing Wales at the forefront of renewable energy innovation has been announced by an international consortium. The ground-breaking project proposed for Swansea’s waterfront will include a newly-designed tidal lagoon, featuring state-of-the-art underwater turbines generating 320 megawatts of renewable energy from the 9.5km structure. Pembrokeshire craft brewery looks to reduce CO2 emissions using microalgae
A Pembrokeshire microbrewery has teamed up with Swansea University bioscientists to help reduce its CO2 emissions. Bluestone Brewing Co is using the CO2 emissions produced from the brewing process to cultivate microalgae, which can then be used as biomass in a range of products. If successful, it is hoped that the solution will be replicable for other small scale CO2 producing companies. Read More
Carmarthenshire Council plans to introduce electric buses on rural routes
Electric buses could be taking passengers on a rural service between Carmarthen, Lampeter and Aberystwyth by the end of next year. The Welsh Government has given Carmarthenshire Council £4.8 million to build a new depot in Carmarthen and buy eight electric buses. The council has now applied for planning permission for the timber clad depot, which will include charging points for the eight buses. Read More

Hostel where you can stay for £20 a night opens in Swansea city centre
Cwtsh Hostel overlooks Castle Square and is a combination of pod and private accommodation. A single pod bed is £20 a night, £25 a night for the four bed dorm. The private rooms start at £50 a night. Managing director Llyr Roberts said: “Cwtsh is a Cwtsh, it’s home, so that’s where the idea for the name came from and trying to play the Welsh theme. We’re looking at some other things like having introductory Welsh classes, a few things in terms of Welsh tourism.” Read More

The Grand Hotel in Swansea is looking to expand and achieve a 4 star rating
A landmark Swansea city centre hotel has lodged significant expansion plans. The Grand Hotel in Swansea’s High Street has asked Swansea Council for the go-ahead to build a five storey rear extension, a two storey front extension and a room terrace in order to create an additional 42 new rooms. Those behind the three star hotel want to carry out the move in order for it to become a four star rated venue in future. Read More

Another singer has joined the list of big names set to perform at Swansea Arena next year: Will Young. The 42-year-old singer-songwriter joins an all-star line-up including Rob Brydon, Katherine Ryan, Rhod Gilbert, Alice Cooper and The Cult, John Bishop, Oti Mabuse and Diversity in the new 3,500 capacity arena’s inaugural year.
