Big Boost for Swansea Businesses
Swansea City Centre businesses experienced a huge boost in retail sales and footfall, as over 3,000 students descended on the city for its annual Student Shopping Night on October 3rd. Swansea’s Student Night is delivered in partnership between the Quadrant Shopping Centre, Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) and Swansea Market and is designed to give students the best possible introduction to the city.

Pobl plots Swansea affordable homes
Housing provider Pobl has lodged plans for more than 30 affordable homes on agricultural land in Swansea. The registered social landlord has submitted an application to Swansea Council to build 31 properties on a site east of Clordir Road in the village of Pontlliw. Proposed is a mix of houses, bungalows and apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms. Children’s play space and informal amenity space would also be provided. Read More
New road proposed for Swansea’s SA1 area
There are plans to fill in a water channel at Swansea docks and build a road across it. The road across the channel at Prince of Wales Dock, SA1, would provide a link from Kings Road, where the University of Wales Trinity Saint David campus is, along the south of the dock and from there up to Langdon Road, which connects to Fabian Way. There is currently a swing bridge with a road across the channel, but it’s only for the use of dock owners Associated British Ports. Read More
Swansea’s Copr Bay bridge has won an award for its design
Swansea’s Copr Bay bridge has won an award for the high standard of its design. At the Structural Steel Design Awards 2023, judges praised the bridge for providing a dramatic new gateway to Swansea. They also commented on its striking form and colour, which helps acknowledge the bay’s history as a centre of coal and copper production. Read More
New computer generated images released
71/72 Kingsway is being specifically targeted at the digital, tech and creative sectors. Main contractor Bouygues UK is making considerable progress on the seven-storey development, with construction earmarked for completion in early 2024. The images bring the building to life, showing the large double height reception, inspiring auditorium, full height glazed office spaces and top floor roof terrace with far-reaching views over Swansea Bay. Inside Wing’d It, the new chicken restaurant that’s opened in Swansea’s High Street
Wing lovers, rejoice. A new restaurant specialising in chicken wings, burgers and tenders has opened up along Swansea’s High Street. Wing’d It has opened up in the old Pastalicious. Its owners, Ammar Alabtah and Mehmet Ongun, took over the running of the unit back in January, but were determined not to open the doors until it they felt it was perfect. Now, their business is officially welcoming customers, and is already off to a great start. Read More
Pub regular steps in to take over his own local after it shut suddenly
Locals were gutted when staff at The Coopers Arms in Plasmarl confirmed the pub would be closing. Fortunately, a local man has now taken the pub on. Richard Hammett was born and raised in Plasmarl and has been a regular customer at the pub ever since he was first able to have a pint! Read More

Eczema: Sister creates device to ease brother’s condition
A design graduate has created a gadget to help her brother cope with eczema he has had throughout his life. Rhys Bell from Swansea was diagnosed with eczema when he was three years old and used topical steroid cream for twenty years to treat his painful flare ups. His sister Lauren Bell designed a device to relieve the itching caused by the condition, but in a safer way. Read More
Coca-Cola trial to make bottle tops from CO2 emissions
Coca-Cola has unveiled plans to make its bottle tops from carbon dioxide taken out of the atmosphere. The firm – one of the world’s biggest users of plastic – is funding a three-year trial at Swansea University as part of the company’s target of net zero by 2040. Much of its current plastic packaging is made cheaply, from fossil fuels. But it aims to “capture” CO2 from the air, or from factory emissions, to produce a key ingredient for plastics. Read More
£5 Million Grant to Speed up the Switch to Net Zero Buildings
The project, called Switch to Net Zero Buildings, will enable buildings across south Wales to generate, store and release their own heat and electricity. Crucially, buildings would be linked together in a regional energy system that is not only low carbon but also gives energy users more control. The idea is to see ‘buildings as power stations’, an innovative design concept pioneered by Swansea University for both homes and non-domestic buildings. Read More
UWTSD teams up with EDF and The Energy Consortium
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has partnered with the energy company EDF and The Energy Consortium as part of its journey towards Net Zero. This partnership has led to the installation of over 1200 Solar PV panels on 6 buildings across the University’s estate in Swansea and Lampeter. The largest of these installations is on the Dynevor building in the centre of Swansea. Read More
Major hydrogen fuel project planned for former oil refinery
The 20MW hydrogen generation plant on the former Puma Energy site in Milford Haven would generate, on average, five tonnes of hydrogen a day; the electricity coming from the substation on site, using green electricity from UK windfarms. The technology uses the electrolysis of water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen; the end product is hydrogen gas, which can be used for fuel cells in cars, fuel for engines and turbines, or liquid fuel for planes and lorries. Crown Estate increases Celtic Sea floating offshore wind farm capacity
The Crown Estate has increased the overall capacity of the planned floating offshore wind farms in the Celtic Sea. It will offer three project development areas (PDA) of equal size to bidders, rather than four project sizes of varying sizes off the Pembrokeshire coast and South West England. The three PDAs will each have the potential capacity of up to 1.5GW, increasing the overall capacity from 4GW to 4.5GW – enough to power over more than 4 million homes. Read More
Hydrogen fuelled local bus in green public transport trial
The bus is fuelled by locally produced electrolytic green hydrogen – made from renewable electricity and water. The bus has an equivalent range to that of a conventional diesel vehicle and takes a similar time to refuel. It uses a refuelling point similar to a garage forecourt. The 322 service between Haverfordwest and Carmarthen was chosen to see how the bus performs on a longer route with long hills, which can be a challenge for battery powered buses. Read More
Plans to convert green areas in Carmarthenshire into wildflower meadows
Areas of grassland managed by Carmarthenshire Council will hum with bees and other pollinators under plans to convert it into wildflower and meadow habitat. The authority is mapping what it described as its amenity grassland – green areas within town and villages, for example – as part of a strategy to attract pollinators by providing them somewhere to forage and lay their eggs, and to create a more colourful and varied canvas for people to enjoy. High hopes for breeding ospreys to return to Pembrokeshire
A group of friends are aiming to bring back breeding ospreys to South Wales after a 200-year absence. The team has built five nesting platforms along the Cleddau Estuary. One of Britain’s rarest birds of prey, ospreys are formidable apex predators that hunt shallow swimming fish by divebombing the water and plunging their razor-sharp talons into the fishes’ backs. are an iconic species and a rewilding success story like beavers or white-tailed eagles. RWE working with marine firm on floating wind
RWE has collaborated with Sarens and Tugdock to investigate innovative floating wind deployment and integration. A study will investigate two types of floating offshore wind platforms – one steel and the other concrete – alongside the integration of next generation wind turbine generators. The aim is to maximise local supply chain opportunities by utilising local port infrastructure at Port Talbot and Milford Haven, two of Wales’ deepest ports. Read More
Major green initiative underway in Llanelli
Hundreds of trees and thousands of wildflowers are being planted in Llanelli in a major green initiative by the town council. Dozens of schoolchildren from schools across the town have joined in planting schemes to improve the environment. Some 240 trees, 105 medium year-round-colour saplings, and 105 medium wildlife saplings, as well as 30 small copse saplings will be planted in Llanerch Field, Penygaer Playing Fields, Penyfan, and at Crown Park. Businesses urged to prepare for new recycling rules and explore greener business models
Businesses in Wales are being advised to prepare for the Welsh Government’s new Workplace Recycling Wales laws, which come into force in April 2024. They will require businesses to separate out their waste recyclables and unsold items such as electrical equipment and textiles. Wood waste will be banned from landfill. As circular economy thinking increases, businesses need to reconsider what they make and sell, and the lifecycle of those products. Read More
Meet the people transforming a graveyard for the community
One of the recipients of our Changemakers funding is The Llansamlet Graveyard Community Garden, which is doing amazing things for locals and wildlife. South West Wales Connected caught up with project manager David Rooke to hear the latest news. St Samlet’s church has a long fascinating history. There’s been a church there since the 6th Century. New 19-bedroom boutique hotel set to open as part of Morgan’s Collection in Swansea
Swansea.com has asked for permission to transform the old Queens Building in the Maritime Quarter into hotel accommodation. The application is being lodged after a “record occupancy” over the last 12 months for the business, and there are grand plans to expand further over the next three to five years, with 150 hotel rooms in the city centre. It will boost employment too, with Swansea.com planning to double the number of people currently work for them. Read More
Brilliant Max Boyce mural is unveiled in his home town
A wonderful piece of street art depicting Welsh folk hero Max Boyce has appeared in his home town of Glynneath. The mural, created by one of Wales’ leading street artists Steve ‘Jenks’ Jenkins, has appeared on the side of the Dinas Rock pub, who donated the space on their wall for the artwork. Read More
Inside the old ‘gentleman’s club’ where you can stay in rooms named after the original massage areas
While there are nods to the building’s notorious past it has been transformed into something entirely different, with affordable rooms, a coffee shop, events space, and a bar. Housing what was described as a ‘gentleman’s club’, Studio 95, as it was known, had been in operation for more than two decades but was vacated halfway through lockdown, making the building available. Renaissance masterpiece on display at Carmarthenshire Museum
A painting described as a Renaissance masterpiece is on display at the Carmarthenshire Museum until early next year. Tobias and the Angel, which dates back to the early 1470s, is an altar painting by the Workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, a leading artist of Renaissance Florence. Mainly known as a sculptor, he also trained painters in his workshop, including Leonardo da Vinci. It has been suggested that da Vinci painted parts of Tobias and the Angel. Read More
Everything you need to know about this year’s Swansea’s traditional Christmas parade
Santa will return to Swansea this year for his traditional parade heralding the start of the festive season. The FREE city centre procession will take place on Sunday 19 November. The parade will set off from Victoria Road at around 5pm before making its way through the city centre to The Kingsway. Santa will be performing the city centre Christmas lights switch-on; one from Castle Square and another from outside the Dragon Hotel on the Kingsway. Read More
Full line up announced for Swansea’s Gŵyl NAWR festival
A one-day festival of experimental music including sets from Pat Morgan of legendary Welsh band Datblygu is set to take place in Swansea in November. Gŵyl NAWR 2023 (NOW festival) will take place across two floors at the Tŷ Tawe venue in the city centre on Saturday 11 November. NAWR will feature sets from Welsh artists creating left-field and experimental music in a variety of genres including lo-fi, free jazz, alternative folk, and music. Read More

ALPHA Collaboration at CERN Confirms Anyimatter Falls in the Same Way as Matter for the First Time
Swansea University physicists, as leading members of the ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus) collaboration at CERN, have demonstrated that atoms of antihydrogen fall to Earth in the same way as their matter equivalents for the first time. The groundbreaking results rule out the possibility of antimatter being accelerated upwards in Earth’s gravity and bring researchers one step closer to unravelling one of the most high-profile problems in physics.
