Historic observatory in popular Swansea woods to be developed into planetarium
Thanks to a development grant awarded by The Architectural Heritage Fund, The Penllergare Trust can now save the historically important equatorial observatory at the popular Penllergare Valley Woods. The equatorial observatory was constructed in 1846 by John Dillwyn Llewelyn, a pioneering photographer with interests in science and astronomy. In 1855, one of the earliest photographs of the moon was taken there by Llewelyn’s daughter, Thereza. Read More

Swansea Arena generates visitor and jobs boost for city
Close to 110,000 – that’s how many visitors Swansea Arena has attracted since first opening its doors about six months ago. Developed by Swansea Council and run by Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), the arena stands at the heart of the city’s new £135m Copr Bay district. Stars to have already performed at the arena include John Bishop, Royal Blood, and Alice Cooper and The Cult. The Arena is part-funded by the £1.3bn Swansea Bay City Deal. Read More
£30 million project that will develop skills across South West Wales takes positive step forward
The Skills and Talent Programme, which is part of the Swansea Bay City Deal, will aim to deliver 2,200 additional skills opportunities by helping around 14,000 people upskill and create at least 3000 new apprenticeship placements over the next decade. The programme will also help support local businesses to grow by developing a talented workforce across the region with a focus on industries with high demand for workers. Read More

New city centre service will help people through cost of living crisis
A popular service has returned to Swansea. The Switched On energy awareness hub has opened in High Street to offer free advice and guidance on keeping fuel bills as low as possible. The service, funded by Swansea Council and operated by Environment Centre Swansea, first operated in nearby Nelson Street in the first half of this year. It has an ongoing programme of community visits that regularly takes practical tips to easily accessible venues in Swansea. Read More

The appeal, in its 12th year, helps hundreds of children with families who can’t afford to buy toys or gifts. New Swansea wellness centre ambition for city centre
A new wellness centre serving around 52,000 people could be built in the heart of Swansea. The seven-storey building would house a range of services, including two GP practices, dentistry, podiatry, sexual health and mental health. RWE commissions study with Swansea-based Marine Power Systems into Celtic Sea opportunities for ports and suppliers
The Celtic Sea offers a huge opportunity to develop large-scale, commercial floating offshore wind and RWE as the largest energy producer and renewables operator in Wales, wants to play a part in its delivery. In anticipation of this, RWE has commissioned Swansea-based Marine Power Systems to develop a project plan for delivering up to 1GW of floating wind using the ports ABP Port Talbot and Pembroke Dock for foundation assembly and turbine assembly. Gower Field to Fork brought together several local farms with Bishopston Comprehensive School and food distributor Castell Howell. Lessons Learned from Floating Wind and Tidal Energy

Former west Wales armaments depot could soon be making ‘green fuel’ for buses and trains
The site of a former Royal Navy Armaments Depot in Pembrokeshire could soon be leading the way in making fuel for buses, HGVs, trains, and industry in Wales more environmentally friendly. Trecwn Green Energy Hub, which is being developed by Statkraft, Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, is the company’s first green hydrogen project to be announced in the UK. Read More
Landfill site considered for giant solar farm
Thousands of solar panels could be installed at Swansea’s Tir John landfill site. Around 5,500 solar panels would occupy a third of the sprawling 36-hectare site, which closed this year for good to black bag waste. The land is synonymous with Swansea’s industrial past. Mining took place before the Tir John coal-fired power station was built in the 1930s, later switching to oil before it was decommissioned in 1976. Read More
Crown Estate refines five areas mapped in Celtic Sea for floating offshore wind
The Crown Estate has revised the five areas off the coast of Cornwall and Wales ahead of its upcoming 4GW floating offshore wind leasing round in the Celtic Sea. In the coming months, the areas will be refined further into potential ‘project development areas’ within which the first generation of commercial-scale floating windfarms can be built. These will be open for competitive tender in mid-2023. Read More

Parade celebrates city centre public art success
A colourful city centre parade and celebratory event marked the formal end to a popular Swansea public art trail. The giant artist-designed globes that formed the centrepiece of the city’s The World Reimagined initiative are set to remain in St David’s Square until the middle of November. They’re then due to make a final journey to London, to be exhibited in Trafalgar Square with globes from across the UK on November 19-20. Read More
Time to celebrate as new clock looks to the future
Swansea has a new highly visible time piece! The new clock – on a tower overlooking the former Hafod-Morfa Copperworks – has been activated. It’s a useful and attractive new addition to the Lower Swansea Valley landscape and will be seen by tens of thousands of people every week. The clock tower is on the copperworks’ former powerhouse that will soon be an additional base for Penderyn Whisky. The site is being revamped by John Weaver Contractors. Read More
Street pianos bring music and colour to Swansea’s streets as part of Documenting Jazz Conference
Staff and students from Swansea College of Art have initiated the Street Pianos project. Five specially designed street piano will be situated in unique city centre locations. The five sites are: Elysium, HQ Urban Kitchen, Dynevor Centre for Art and Design, Swansea Indoor Market, and the Dylan Thomas Centre. The conference itself, Documenting Jazz 2022, runs across four days, with keynote speeches delivered by Dr Joan Cartwright and Francesco Martinelli. Read More

Mark it in your diaries, Friday, November 18, is the day that the carnival returns to the streets of Llanelli, starting the official countdown to Christmas in the town. One of the largest community Christmas events in Wales, the vibrant parade, featuring dressed lorries, sleighs and tractors, will travel through the town and the official switch on of the Christmas lights is not to be missed. Countdown to Christmas underway as date set for city’s festive parade
Father Christmas will return to Swansea this year for his traditional parade that heralds the start of the festive season. The city centre procession, organised by Swansea Council, will take place on Sunday 20 November – five weeks before the big day itself. The parade will set off from Victoria Road at around 5pm before making its way through the city centre to The Kingsway. Read More
Swansea’s Waterfront Winterland returns as dates confirmed
Swansea’s Waterfront Winterland will return from Tuesday, November 8. Waterfront Winterland – better known as winter wonderland – will be returning with its popular ice walk through the trees at the city’s Museum Park. There will be special deals to ensure the event is affordable for families taking into account the current economic climate. As a result organisers have introduced a new “super saver” ticket which they say offers “substantial savings”. Read More
