What the new homes set to be built with amazing views of Swansea will look like
The former Townhill campus of Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea Institute and other educational establishments is currently being transformed into a place for people to live in the future. The new Pobl Group development will be a mixture of 153 new homes designed to make the most of the stunning views from the site. The Edwardian college building will be preserved, meanwhile, and converted into one and two bedroom apartments. Read More

Nearly 50 flats and bowling green to be built on site of former supermarket in Carmarthen
A multi-million pound residential development is set to be built at the site of a former supermarket in Carmarthen. The old Lidl store, based in Priory Street on the edge of the town centre, has been empty for the past two years after the supermarket giant closed its doors and moved into a new larger location a mile away. Now, new life could be breathed into the empty 1.1 acre site with the development of a residential scheme. Read More

Stunning and nostalgic new look for Swansea’s Castle Square is revealed
More new images have been released which reveal the stunning new look planned for Swansea’s Castle Square. The area in the centre of the city is set to be transformed over the next year or so with a view to returning it to its former glory. Castle Square used to be filled with more greenery than we see today, with lawned areas and flower beds acting as a backdrop to the retail shops in Oxford Street, the bars in Wind Street and other adjoining roads. Read More

Cwmpas – the new name for the Wales Co-operative Centre
The Wales Co-operative Centre announced that it has changed its name to Cwmpas. The new name signals the next chapter for the development agency working for economic and social change in Wales and in other parts of the UK. It is designed to reflect the organisation’s role in helping people and communities set out a path to a better future. Read More

SWANSEA BAY CITY DEAL

Detailed plans submitted for £200m city deal project in Llanelli
The Pentre Awel scheme at Delta Lakes will comprise a new leisure centre, hydrotherapy pool, academic, research and business space, health and rehabilitation facilities, assisted living accommodation, open market and social housing, a nursing home and hotel. The Carmarthenshire Council-led development is one of nine city deal projects for the Swansea Bay City Region, and already has outline planning approval. Read More

Introbiz Swansea and West Wales hosted its inaugural annual expo followed by a gala dinner and awards ceremony on April 7th at the Brangwyn Hall and Village Hotel Swansea respectively. Ministry of Furniture have very exciting news! From Tuesday 3rd May they will be based at the old Metal Box factory in Neath. Powells Cottage Holidays hosts public networking event for those looking to enter the holiday letting market in 2022
On Friday 6th May, Powells Holiday Cottages, part of the Original Cottages family will host its first networking event at the Giltar Hotel in Tenby. Laura Kerslake, Brand Manager for Wales, Original Cottages said; “We’ve been part of the Saundersfoot community for over half a century, and we are delighted to host this event which it is hoped will provide an open forum for the community to explore potential investments and to seek advice for holiday letting.” Read More

A cute new coffee cart has set up next to the Swiss Cottage in Singleton Park
Gower Coffee Co. is run by Anna Luporini, aged 20, whose family have been in the coffee business for more than half a century. She said: “Starting a coffee cart business has always been a dream of mine. In lockdown I used my extra time and started up a jewellery business, the money I saved up was used to invest in my coffee cart. We refurbished an old rice horsebox which was rotting in a field and converted it into a unique work of art!” Read More

The Swansea food app that knocks spots off JustEat and Deliveroo
Move over Just Eat and Deliveroo, there’s a new kid on the block. Swansea Eats is a local food delivery app that was founded in 2021 by couple Sophie Heneberry and Rory Edwards after they noticed that big food app fees were “crippling” small independent businesses. The app has only been running for a year, but it already has 12,000 regular users buying food from almost 100 independent eateries in the city. Read More

Melin Tregwynt celebrates its 110th year by completing employee ownership deal
Melin Tregwynt, the iconic woollen mill and shop, has officially transitioned to an Employee Ownership Trust after its current owners Eifion and Amanda Griffiths handed over the reigns to 42 employees of the company. Melin Tregwynt was supported in its transition to Employee Ownership by the Employee Ownership Wales team at Social Business Wales. Read More

Daffodils to treat Alzheimer’s could be Welsh hill farming’s future
Hill farmer Kevin Stephens has been growing Wales’ national flower for more than a decade. He discovered a hardy daffodil variety, grown under stress in wind-swept conditions, produced higher levels of the chemical galanthamine. That is an approved treatment for slowing down the progress of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The farm harvests enough to help about 9,000 patients a year. Read More

Cerebra and UWTSD collaboration assists Henry’s mobility with innovative crutches design
Carmarthen-based Cerebra worked with the Cerebra Innovation Centre, the Assistive Technologies Innovation Centre, and the Centre for Advanced Batch Manufacture – all based at UWTSD Swansea – to make a set of brand-new, super-light and super-strong crutches for nine year old Henry Latchem. They were able to source 3D printed titanium – the material that they make space rockets and Formula 1 cars from! Read More

Foodbank is Supporting Community Thanks to National Lottery Community Funding
PBP Foodbank in Kidwelly are helping their community to adapt, recover and thrive, thanks to National Lottery players, by setting up a new project called PBP Poverty Support. The CETMA run foodbank will be providing Poverty Support to the community that it provides the vital service for. Read More

Food resilience has become ever more critical in the face of multiple threats, from the increasing cost of food and energy to growing global instability. Megan Takes the Pledge!
Megan and her sister Bronwen, part of CETMA’s Megan and The Food Squad Project, have taken Act4Food Act4Change’s pledge. The Pledge involves agreeing to 10 Actions which young people want governments and businesses to take to fix our food system. This list has been created by youth and voted on by over 100,000 young people globally! You can take the pledge and find out more from their website.

Farmers provide land to despairing growers
Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society provided an acre of land to Grwp Resilience to allow the townsfolk of Haverfordwest to grow food and extra for learning and therapy activity. The growers have formed their own community interest company, Parc Helyg which is now managing the site. Read more about the UK Community Renewal Fund, which paid for an 8 week beginners gardening course running on the site, and Grwp Resilience.

UWTSD Business Management Student sets up a Clothes Swishing event in Carmarthen
Christine Joy is setting up a clothes swishing event in Carmarthen as a way to save the environment and for people to save money. Clothes swishing is a way to slow down fashion and help our environment. By keeping items of clothing, shoes, and accessories in life for longer, we can reduce the need to buy new, helping our environment and saving money. Read More

A hydrogen-powered ferry service across the Bristol Channel is being considered
Rob Stewart, the leader of Swansea Council, said “This would be a massive boost for tourism and business – to think you could cut your travel time to Devon and Cornwall by half, and of course it would have environmental benefits too: taking cars off the road and introducing green-powered ferries.” Hydrogen generated by renewable energy would be a major breakthrough for the transport sector, which is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the UK.Read More

Early Consultation Begins on Gwynt Glas Floating Wind Project
Early consultation is underway with the commercial fisheries sector as the team at Gwynt Glas reveal details of the location of their 1,500 sq km site search area in the Celtic Sea. Gwynt Glas, a joint venture announced in January between EDF Renewables UK and Pembrokeshire-based DP Energy, will be capable of generating up to 1GW of low carbon green energy in the Celtic Sea. New multi-million pound Mumbles seawall set to provide protection from climate change until 2070
Multi-million plans to upgrade the seawall at Mumbles have been approved. A 1.1km stretch of the wall and revetment between Knab Rock and the Dairy car park, by Oystermouth Square, will be strengthened and raised by up to 70cm. The promenade will be wider than currently and there will be additional seating and play areas, and 46 new trees. Cllr Des Thomas said it was “an opportunity of a lifetime” for Mumbles. Read More

The record numbers of puffins that are now populating Skomer and Skokholm islands
The islands are home to not only vast seabird colonies but also considered a wildlife haven enriched in diversity. The unexplained rise in numbers has yet to be discovered but work is still ongoing to help maintain this precious bird on our Welsh coasts. On Ramsey Island, Wildlife fieldworkers are trying to introduce more puffin breeding with the use of model puffins and loudspeakers making puffin noises, in hopes of attracting the bird to thrive. Massive Oakwood theme park ride is returning after closing for more than six years
The Welsh theme park’s historic ride Bounce returns alongside the popular main train line attraction which carries visitors into the theme park – previously absent due to the ongoing Covid restrictions. Read More

Aquarium plan unveiled for Swansea
The proposal is to build it between the Civic Centre and Swansea Arena coastal park, potentially at a compound area beside the Civic Centre. The aquarium would offer an immersive experience for visitors and be a wider educational resource. The concept is based on The Cube, Brisbane – a two-storey interactive attraction featuring nearly 50 touch screen displays. Read More

The brilliant Twin Town mural taking shape in Port Talbot
It’s arguably Wales’ greatest cult film. The dark comedy crime drama, set in Swansea, was filmed mainly around Port Talbot. Now, days after a major mural of Michael Sheen was unveiled in the town, it is adding to its burgeoning reputation as the street art capital of Wales and paying tribute to its filmic heritage, with a series of murals celebrating Twin Town. The city named Wales’ best night out – and it’s not Cardiff
A study, from Get Licensed, has analysed the number of venues per head, the cost of a pint and a range of safety issues to reveal the best nights out in Britain. With a score of 6.59/10, Swansea have won the title of best night out in Wales, and sixth best in the UK. Swansea beat popular towns such as Plymouth, Newcastle and Aberdeen and was the only Welsh city to appear on the list. Read More

New scheme launches to showcase Swansea culture to refugees
The scheme hopes to give people who are new to the city an experience of the culture and languages, as well as the chance to meet new people in their area. The first tour, being held on Saturday, May 14, is expected to include a tour of the library at the civic centre, a tour of Oystermouth Castle and an ice cream at Ripples. Future tours will include the Copperworks, the Swansea.com Stadium, Swansea Market and the Gower. Read More

Gower College Swansea is top of class at UK-wide AAC Apprenticeship Awards
Gower College Swansea has been recognised for its outstanding apprenticeship provision at the prestigious UK AAC Apprenticeship Awards 2022, winning both the Care Services Apprenticeship Provider of the Year Award and the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Apprenticeship Champion Award. Gower College Swansea had the most wins of any provider in the UK and was the only Welsh provider to receive an award on the evening. Read More

QS World University Ranking by Subject 2022: Swansea University Achieves its Best Ranking
To compile the rankings, QS assessed academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, analysing over 14.7 million unique research papers, producing close to 96 million citations. 1,543 institutions were ranked across 51 specific subjects, categorised into 5 broad subject areas. Swansea University’s growing global reputation has seen it achieve its best performance in this subject ranking to date. Castell Howell and Swansea Arena sponsor Swansea University for Welsh Varsity
Welsh food wholesaler Castell Howell and the new Swansea Arena were the principal sponsors for Swansea University at this year’s Welsh Varsity. Both sponsors featured on the men’s and women’s rugby jerseys for their respective matches against Cardiff University. The Welsh Varsity is a week-long festival of sport, which this year culminated in the Swansea men’s rugby team beating Cardiff 20-13 at Swansea.com stadium on April 27th. Read More

UWTSD Set Design & Production Student and Lecturer worked on ‘Last Train To Christmas’ Film
The film ‘Last Train To Christmas,’ which was recently produced in Bay Studios, Swansea required as part of their production design a difficult to source and very specific prop, a 1980’s National Rail ‘MaxPax’ coffee cup. York Museum hold an original but could not release it in time for filming, therefore, Art Director Gemma Clancy reached out to UWTSD’s Creative Industries degree programme Set & Production in Carmarthen to see if one could be modelled and 3D printed. ” Read More

Swansea’s Student Entrepreneurs Boost their Business Ideas with Big Pitch
Entrepreneurial students received a major boost for their business ideas at Swansea University’s annual Big Pitch Competition, sponsored by Santander Universities. Held in person for the first time in two years, the Big Pitch aims to provide support for students to gain valuable skills and get their ideas off the ground. 19 entrepreneurial students pitched 14 different ideas to a panel of esteemed judges, who awarded more than £10,500 to four start-ups.
