£740k grant support helps transform Swansea

Businesses and other organisations are investing in local areas thanks to money from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns “placemaking” programme. The funding helps revitalise town centres across Wales with schemes such as creating new homes above commercial premises, upgrading vacant commercial units to bring them back into use and creating biodiversity projects such as green walls and green roofs. More than 100 new council homes delivered as part of ambitious £300 million plan

A total of 119 new council homes will have been delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council by the end of this financial year. Providing quality, affordable homes is a key priority for the council which is investing over £300 million to support the delivery of more than 2,000 additional homes across the county over the next five years. New homes and parking facilities coming to Sketty

Work will soon get underway to create new homes and parking facilities at the existing car park on Eversley Road in Sketty. Coastal Housing have exciting plans to create 15 new apartments on the site. “Sketty is a thriving community with lots of popular independent shops and cafes that local people value.” says James Griffiths, Coastal’s Head of Development. Latest photos of the new £48m Haverfordwest High VC School

It’s looking impressive! The £48.7m facility is being built in Prendergast and will accommodate 1500 pupils aged 11-16. There will also be 250 sixth form pupils attending the state-of-the-art education facility which will provide £4.6m worth of leisure provision. Externally, the scheme will boast extensive sports facilities including playing fields, a WRU 3G standard rugby pitch and tennis facilities as well as parking and coach drop-off. Read More

Work underway to transform historic Swansea building empty for 15 years

The Albert Hall has played host to Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and David Lloyd George, and is said to be where 14-year-old Ernie Wise first met 13-year-old Eric Bartholomew, helping to initiate comedy partnership Morecambe and Wise. The aim now is to restore the 157-year-old venue to its original splendour, creating a development that’ll include an 800-capacity music and entertainment venue plus new spaces for lifestyle businesses and offices. A Swansea skate park gets the go ahead

A skate park planned for years at Llwynderw on the seafront in Swansea can now be delivered without further delay. Mumbles Skatepark Association said they were “extremely pleased” about the freedom to proceed. Messages posted to the group’s Facebook page included “This is amazing”, “Fantastic news! Thank you for not giving up!”, and “It’s not just skateboarders, it’s parents and grandparents – everyone sees the benefits that it will bring.” Read More

Empty townhouse with an abattoir at the back could become a cafe-bar, bakery, butchers’ shop and offices

A sprawling listed building in Laugharne which used to have an abattoir at the back could be getting a new lease of life. Globe House was at various times a hotel, military billet, horse and coach station, butcher’s shop, auction room, video hire outlet, bank and residential property. The nine-bedroom house was in the BBC Cymru Wales/S4C thriller, Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher, starring Eve Myles. Read More

First look inside the new Swansea Arena after a walk to Copr Bay across the golden bridge

It’s been a long, tough, five years in the making – but now the doors to Swansea’s brilliant new arena are finally opening to the public. After a successful “housewarming party” in February, Swansea Arena hosted VIPs and members of the press on Thursday, March 3, to formally open the Arena and the £135m Copr Bay leisure district. Swansea University’s Smart Garments used by Elite Athletes

UK Government Minister David TC Davies has visited the £132 million Swansea Bay City Deal Campuses project to see how the technology for Smart Garments has been developed and was used by athletes, including medal winners, in last year’s Tokyo Olympics. The wearable technology was designed by Swansea University experts who invented a flexible heater using carbon-based stretchable graphene ink that can be directly attached to fabric. Read More

New Llanelli leisure centre will be part of first section of huge new wellness village which will cost up to £87 million

The first zone of a £199m health, life science and housing project in Llanelli looks to be a step closer. Bouygues UK has given the council a maximum cost of £87.07m for zone one – comprising a new leisure centre, clinical delivery centre, research-led business development, and wellbeing skills centre. The council-led project at Delta Lakes will eventually feature four zones spread over 83 acres. Read More

Swansea’s high street bouncing back from pandemic faster than Cardiff, study suggests

Swansea’s high street economy is bouncing back from the pandemic faster than Cardiff. Data from the Centre for Cities’ high streets recovery tracker suggests that Swansea is in the top 10 of the UK’s towns and cities to have bounced back fastest in both footfall and spending, while Cardiff is in the bottom 10. The figures suggest that size may have made a difference, with smaller towns and cities bouncing back much faster overall than larger ones. Read More

UWTSD Architecture student entrepreneur opens new board game café

UWTSD student Ryan Davies started planning for his business at the height of the pandemic, but was undeterred and determined to succeed. The only board game cafe located in Swansea, situated on the famous Wind Street, Socialdice is a friendly, welcoming space for old and new gamers to come together to enjoy a library of 400 board games, with knowledgeable staff on hand, called ‘Game Gurus’ to make game recommendations and help with the rules. A ‘traditional’ fish and chip shop is opening in Swansea’s Wind Street

A good old-fashioned chip shop has openned in Jack Murphys in Wind Street, with a retro gaming bar to follow in a few weeks. The chippy, aptly called “Jack the Chipper”, will be serving up traditional chip shop food including rissoles, sausages and chips. It’s set to stay open until 3am every day of the week, and is likely to be a hit with Wind Street party-goers in search of a meal after a night on the town. Read More

Family behind one of Swansea’s best-loved restaurants is opening city’s first chai tea cafe

The first-ever chai tea shop and cafe, Chai Stop, has opened in Swansea city centre. Run by Salman Khan, whose family also own Adelina’s Bar and Kitchen and Grill and Griddle, Chai Stop is bringing chai tea to Swansea for the first time. On the menu alongside a variety of chai tea flavours, including the very popular traditional Karak Chai, is Indian street food, desserts, and all-day breakfast. Read More

Indoor axe-throwing and ‘rage room’ venue to open in Swansea city centre

Axe-throwing began as a leisure activity in Canada some years ago, but is now becoming a popular hobby in the UK. Typically, throwers stand 12-foot away from a target, which looks like a large wooden dartboard, and throw one axe at a time towards it, aiming for the bulls-eye. A rage-room, meanwhile, is a safe space where people can destroy or smash up a range of items – a quirky way for someone to get all their anger out! Read More

Work set to start on Swansea University’s innovative renewables scheme

RDM Electrical & Mechanical Services is set to begin work on a highly innovative project – the first of its kind in the UK – to install a comprehensive raft of integrated energy-saving, sustainable technologies at Swansea University’s Bay Campus on behalf of Swansea University. The South Wales-based building services provider is working with its sister company EFT Consult to provide design of the cutting-edge project, which will encompass a commercial rooftop solar photovoltaics (PV) scheme, a carport solar PV scheme, a battery energy storage system (BESS) and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. The Pembrokeshire community-owned business aiming to become Wales’ first commercial seaweed farm

Câr-y-Môr is a commercial venture with a difference. On paper, the goal is to improve the coastal environment and the community of St Davids by creating a commercially viable sustainable seaweed farm, creating jobs and giving local young people a route into the seafood sector. World-first hybrid hydrogen heating system is part of Milford Haven project

The world’s first smart hydrogen hybrid heating system has been demonstrated in Pembrokeshire. The trial combined a hydrogen-fuelled boiler with an electric air-source heat pump alongside smart control technology and was conducted in a building at the Port of Milford Haven. Emissions from home heating and hot water need to be cut by 95% to meet 2050 UK Net Zero targets, and hybrid heating technology will become increasingly important. Read More

Unwanted goods brought back to life and sold at new Llanelli shop

A new shop selling repaired and reused items donated by the public has opened its doors in Llanelli town centre. As well as household items, children’s toys and bicycles up for grabs there will be an in-house paint reuse facility which customers can purchase from the shop at a significantly reduced cost to traditionally bought paint. Remnants of wood donated at the recycling centres have also been transformed into items such as garden furniture and planters. Read More

Dunvant Male Choir 125th Anniversary and Patrons’ Concert at the Brangwyn Hall

It’s not often Sir Bryn is in town! Dunvant Male Choir Patrons’ Concert 2020 is now arranged for 2nd April 2022 at the Brangwyn Hall. Sir Bryn Terfel and Angharad Morgan guest with accompanist Annabel Thwaite. Dunvant Male Choir is the oldest male voice vhoir in Wales with an unbroken history. Formed in 1895 and still one of the busiest and most popular choirs in Wales! This belated concert celebrates the 125th anniversary of the choir. Tickets are available here.

City continues flying the flag for nightlife safety

Swansea’s nightlife scene is keeping the Purple Flag flying over the city for an eighth consecutive year. It’s one of only two places in Wales that can fly the flag which highlights how visitors can always expect an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. The new bid for accreditation pointed to success stories such as regeneration work in Wind Street, new business openings, and the Enjoy Swansea Responsibly campaign to reinforce key Covid safety measures. Work of local community wins international acclaim

The community surrounding the National Botanic Garden of Wales was instrumental in helping the Regency Restoration project gain international acclaim with the presentation of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) coveted People’s Choice Award. The winner of this award is decided by a global public vote and was last won by the Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in Hong Kong which shows the scale of the competition and the magnitude of the win. Read More

Giant mural of Michael Sheen to be painted in Port Talbot

A giant mural of Michael Sheen is to be painted in Port Talbot. The team behind the town’s ARTwalk say they will not let the departure of Banksy’s famous ‘Season’s Greeting’ artwork deter them from establishing the town as the street art capital of Wales. “We intend the street art revolution that Season’s Greetings sparked to continue and spread.” said Derek Davies, who manages the Port Talbot ARTwalk Facebook page. Did you grow up dreaming of being a train driver? Well it may not be too late, thanks to the South Wales Railcar Group and Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway. They are offering people the chance to drive a train under full instruction from a qualified driver instructor. Recently, Francis Bourgeois headed to Llanelli to try the experience out for himself.
