New Car Boosts Donor Milk Hub’s Vital Support for Sick and Premature Babies

More babies in Wales will benefit from the arrival of a new electric vehicle to support donor milk collections. Last year Swansea University, Swansea Bay University Health Board and the Human Milk Foundation announced a partnership that saw the first donor milk hub set up in Wales. The hub, located in Singleton Hospital, allows more babies to receive donor milk in neonatal intensive care units, and enables more local women to donate their surplus milk. Read More

Living at Home celebrates St. David’s Day with its clients

Living at Home, a company in Swansea that supports people with home care services, celebrated St. David’s Day with their clients and asked a local schoolboy, Logan Goodison, to help hand out the gifts. Future engineers visit Pembroke Port to learn about opportunities being unlocked by major port investment

Learners enrolled on Pembrokeshire College’s innovative, industry-led Destination Renewables programme have visited Pembroke Port to see first-hand how major investment to modernise port infrastructure will enable South West Wales to take full advantage of floating offshore wind developments in the Celtic Sea, and other renewable energy and decarbonisation initiatives, expected to create thousands of new job opportunities. Stunning skate park is now open to the public after five years of twists and turns

Asked how his team created such smooth ramps and compressions, designer and builder Ian Jennings, of Maverick Skateparks, said he couldn’t disclose “trade secrets”, but added: “All our guys are multi-skilled craftsmen. We don’t use any sub-contractors. In general it’s just about having a good eye. A lot of our guys are skateboarders, so they look at it with a really critical eye because they understand the functionality of what they’re doing.” Read More

Welsh firm picks up key Swansea regeneration contract

A South Wales firm is one of the first to benefit from a key regeneration project in Swansea city centre. Ministry of Furniture has been appointed to design the furniture and fixtures scheme of Swansea Council’s planned public services hub. The business will work on the contract with the council and main contractors Kier Construction. Read More

Shops, restaurants and elevator plans revealed for historic areas of Swansea

Hafod-Morfa Copperworks, The Strand and Swansea Museum will be transformed in a major new project worth an estimated £9.4m a year to the city’s economy. Led by Swansea Council, the lower Swansea Valley improvement project is also expected to create 69 new jobs while helping to support more than 100 existing jobs. Aimed at celebrating Swansea’s industrial heritage, the project is a result of a successful £20 million bid for levelling-up funding. Read More

Affordable Housing Development in Swansea Due to Progress

Proposals for the residential scheme on land north of Chestnut Avenue in the West Cross – Bay Area of the city include 56 affordable units with associated access, parking, landscaping and ancillary infrastructure and drainage work. The dwellings would comprise 36 houses, ten apartments and ten bungalows. The properties are proposed to be 100 per cent affordable housing (social rented) and will be managed by Coastal Housing. The new Plaza retains its original art-deco charm but with efficient modern facilities. Turf-cutting ceremony to mark start of £200m health, leisure and research project in Llanelli

Turf has been cut to mark the start of a long-awaited healthcare, leisure and research development in Llanelli. The £200 million Pentre Awel scheme at Delta Lakes will feature a new Llanelli Leisure Centre and include housing, a hotel, and education and business space. It is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal (£40 million). Read More

A new ‘arts café’ offering crafts, poetry and live music is set to open in Neath’s historic old Plaza venue

Hybrid Arts Cafe fills an empty unit previously occupied by the renowned Plaza cafe, which was run by the same family from its launch in the 1930s until its closure in 2011. The new “arts café” is the brainchild of Paula Griffiths, an early years primary school teacher with a “life time passion” for creating music, poetry and art – and a desire to give people in the community the chance to engage with the arts and showcase their own creativity. The council has unveiled its free and confidential ‘Front and Centre for Business’ package as part of a wider effort to encourage Welsh, UK and international companies to establish their operations in Neath Port Talbot. Neath Port Talbot is one of Wales’ fastest growing business areas and is developing an impressive reputation as a place to innovate, create and connect – a place which has attracted over 370 new businesses to open in the area in recent years. Rock ‘n’ Dough bakery gets ready to roll into Narberth High Street

Rock ‘n’ Dough was set up by Karl Abraham and Karin Termote when they were on furlough from their jobs in Narberth’s five-star Grove Hotel. Karl started creating artisan bread and pastries from the couple’s home at Maenclochog. “Demand from all over snowballed to the extent we just haven’t got the room at home to cope”  explained Karin. So Rock ‘n’ Dough will be setting up shop on Narberth’s High Street with its new premises in the former NatWest Bank. Read More

The hospital cook from Greece who started selling takeaways from his house and now has his own Swansea restaurant

“I’ve always wanted my own restaurant ever since I went to culinary college. I wanted to follow my passion,” said Alex Steos, who originally started his street food business as a part-time earner while he worked as a cook at Singleton Hospital. Bowel cancer: Pioneering blood tests for patients in Swansea

People who have recovered from bowel cancer and are on NHS waiting lists for colonoscopies will be the first in the UK to be offered pioneering blood tests. Scientists will offer 200 people in Swansea the test to check the disease has not returned. Research into the tests was led by Swansea University with funding from Cancer Research Wales. University Team Part of UK Partnership Awarded £2.2m to Improve Dementia Research

A team from Population Data Science at Swansea University is part of a UK-wide partnership that has secured £2.2 million in support from the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative (ADDI) to help bridge the gap between fundamental discoveries in the lab and successful trials of new treatments for dementia. Access to high-quality data is the biggest accelerator of scientific research. This applies especially to complex conditions like dementia.  Read More

Researchers to Develop Self-Powered and Sustainable Smart Technologies for Older Generation

Studies into the factors associated with the use of smart technologies and Internet of Things (IoT) with older adults have identified low battery life as a critical issue. Now researchers at Swansea University have received £740,000 in funding to design a toolkit of self-powered IoT devices so that the quest for “more-data-less-energy” can be achieved without the exclusion of older people and other marginalised communities. Cleaner Greener Steel: Virtual Technology Assesses Hydrogen as Fuel for Furnaces, to Slash Carbon Emissions

A low-carbon green economy needs steel, for example for products such as wind turbines, trains or electric cars. Steel can also be recycled infinitely, with no loss of quality, however the process of manufacturing steel remains carbon-intensive. Steel experts from Swansea University have been part of a new project looking at switching to hydrogen from fossil fuels. If it proves feasible, it would slash the carbon emissions from steelmaking. Helping businesses cut energy costs: Development Bank of Wales and Welsh Government launch new Green Business Loan Scheme

With the ambition to invest £10m over the next three years, the scheme will help businesses reduce their carbon footprint – supporting Wales’ journey to become net zero by 2050. Businesses could receive loans  for projects including investing in renewable energy technology, improving energy efficiencies within the building, upgrading systems or machinery to reduce energy use, improving water usage and reducing waste. Bwyd Abertawe receives £97,000 funding to develop Swansea food network

Bwyd Abertawe has been awarded £97,000 to help grow the network and progress its work to make Swansea a Sustainable Food Place. Bwyd Abertawe plans to launch its Food Charter on March 29 at our Swansea City Centre Conference. “We’re looking forward to attending the conference, where attendees will be able to sign up to the charter,” said Mary Duckett, development officer at Bwyd Abertawe. Blue Gem secures marine licence for floating wind project Erebus

A pioneering floating wind project off the Pembrokeshire coastline which will provide enough low carbon energy to power 93,000 homes has secured a marine licence. Erebus, Wales’ first planned floating windfarm is located approximately 40km off the coast, and will house seven next generation 14MW turbines on floating platforms. Blue Gem Wind, the joint venture between TotalEnergies, one of the world’s largest energy companies, and Simply Blue Group, secured the licence for a 100MW project. Read More

Huge battery storage plant planned in Swansea could allow more wind and solar farms to be built

A multi-million pound battery energy system which could provide electricity for hundreds of thousands of householders has been proposed in Swansea. The system, which includes a substation, could store excess electricity and then return it to the grid when demand rises. Innova Renewables Ltd, which is seeking pre-application advice from Swansea Council, said large-scale storage of this type helped manage fluctuations in demand and could facilitate the expansion of intermittent, renewable energy. Old train to be upcycled into community cafe

Railway enthusiasts in Llanelli are turning a former train carriage into a unique cafe for the community. Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway is transforming the bodyshell of a class 153 single car diesel multiple unit into the new venture. The heritage project group is a charity run totally by volunteers hoping to grow into a major tourist attraction for the Llanelli district. Read More

Swansea Street Food Festival is returning to the city for four days and this is what will be there

Taking place once again at Museum Park from Friday, April 7 to Monday, April 10, it will feature 30 top street food traders. No two traders cook the same cuisine at the event, meaning people will be able to enjoy a vast range of food including Indian, Japanese, fried chicken, vegan, mac and cheese, Moroccan, Thai, Uzbek, Jamaican, BBQ, duck, Greek, Mexican, Afghan, churros, doughnuts, gelato, waffles, crepes, bao buns and much more. New Swansea railway station mural celebrates city’s past, present and future

The mural on platform four depicts key features of the city, stretching from its past to the present day. It was painted by Fresh Creative Co, and made possible thanks to South West Wales Connected, which is hosted by 4theRegion. Dawn Lyle, co-founder and chair of 4theRegion, said: “We’re delighted with the mural. People really wanted to see a better arrival experience and something that reflected kind of the vibrant community around the station.” Read More

Swansea University Announced as New Title Sponsor of the Swansea Half Marathon

The University has signed a three-year deal to become the headline sponsor for the Swansea Half Marathon. The sponsorship forms part of the Making Strides for Mental Health campaign, which raises funds for essential world-class research into suicide prevention, along with mental health and wellbeing support for Swansea University students. This year’s Swansea Half Marathon, twice named the UK’s best half marathon, will be held on 11 June. Read More

Pupils plant seeds of peace from survivor trees

Five children from Gwaun Cae Gurwen school visited the Botanic Garden to plant seeds from a ginkgo tree that was just over 1,000 metres from ground zero of the detonation of the bomb. The seeds were received from Hiroshima by Awel Aman Tawe, a community organisation in the Amman Valley, currently building a zero-carbon arts and education centre in Cwmgors – Hwb y Gors. Read More
