Purchase of Hook Loader Containers

Pembrokeshire County Council invites you to submit a bid for the purchase of hook loader containers. The Council is inviting quotes for the purchase of four 40cu enclosed containers and eight 40cuyd open top containers. The containers are to be used at recycling centres. They will be transported by a CHEM type TS20 standard hook lift 8 x 4 vehicles. The build and construction must be entirely suitable for this purpose and must be a proven “quality container”. Contract Notices for Carmarthenshire Council

Carmarthenshire County Council wishes to establish a new Construction Professional Services Framework and appoint suitably qualified consultants to provide it with property-related project management and full design team services. It also requires contractors to provide sewage removal services, sewerage-related services and associated remedial works required for the delivery and operation of its property maintenance, highways and flood defence assets.

Penderyn’s new whisky distillery buildings in Swansea are complete

A hotly anticipated new attraction has been built in Swansea after three years of work. A substantial part of the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks site has now been transformed and the keys have been handed to “world-class” whisky business, Penderyn Distillery. The Penderyn Distillery buildings were saved, improved, and newly built by John Weaver Contractors, on behalf of Swansea Council, on the historic site which dates back to 1809. Read More

31 affordable rented homes are planned for a countryside site in Swansea

An affordable housing development could be coming to a field in Pontlliw, near Swansea. Housing association Pobl Group wants to build 22 houses and bungalows and nine flats east of Clordir Road, a couple of hundred metres from the village’s primary school. All the Pobl Group properties would be rental, according to planning documents submitted as part of a pre-planning consultation being carried out by Asbri Planning. Read More

Swansea Hotel Earmarked Amid Soaring Demand

A hotel has been earmarked next door to Swansea Arena. Swansea Council said it has identified a location for a hotel as the new arena drives demand from leisure and business travellers. It comes as a report from Colliers said that three new hotels could be needed in the city by 2026. The report said staycationers seeking out Swansea as a great place to stay are making it one of the “fastest-growing” destinations in the UK for hotel accommodation demand. Read More

New video footage goes inside Kingsway development

This new video footage takes you inside the office development that’s taking shape at the former Oceana nightclub site in Swansea city centre. The scheme, once operational, will provide space for 600 workers in sectors like tech and digital. The landmark building will include unique internal and external public spaces with a reception area, balconies, a green rooftop terrace, atriums, dedicated event areas, meeting spaces and food, beverage and retail outlets. It’s like Toy Story! Port Talbot refuse worker Richard gets his own lifelike action figure

A renowned Marvel Comics artist has created an action figure of Neath Port Talbot Council refuse worker Richard Brace as part of a campaign by public services union UNISON to raise awareness of the role councils play in providing vital everyday services. Richard, 33, lives in Neath and has worked for the council for over nine years. He began as a litter picker, moved into the recycling team and after getting his HGV licence four years ago, went on to bin collections. Read More

The Welsh House bar and restaurant replaces Marco Pierre White Steakhouse in Swansea Marina

The Welsh House is home to SA1’s largest alfresco dining and drinking area which “has the sun all day and evening”, and it will host live music every weekend with performances from local Welsh artists. The main focus for the restaurant is supporting local Welsh suppliers and sourcing local produce whenever possible, whilst creating “core Welsh partnerships”. Read More

New Welsh bakery sells out every day since it opened

A new Welsh bakery has opened on one of the trendiest high streets in the country and it has sold out every day since it’s opened. On its opening weekend on May 5 in Narberth, Rock N Dough Bakehouse had sold out of pastries by 7.30am and even after doubling the number of loaves and croissants he makes every morning, baker Karl Abraham is struggling to keep up. A new cabaret bar is set to open on Swansea’s Wind Street this summer

Martin Jones and Marc Scofield explained “We’ve had Main Stage Cardiff for three years now, it’s been so successful and we really wanted to expand. We’ve had a lot of customers come and see us in Cardiff, from Swansea, so felt opening a bar in Swansea would be the right place! Main Stage will host cabaret shows with drag queens every Friday and Saturday and we’ll have events and drag karaoke in the week.” Read More

Fish and chip shop burned down in Mumbles pier fire set to re-open

A restaurant which was completely destroyed in a massive fire on Mumbles Pier will reopen this year. The huge fire in September 2022 completely ruined the popular Copperfish restaurant at the end of the pier. The owners of Mumbles Pier; Fred and Bert Bollom hope to have the takeaway aspect of Copperfish up and running by July 2023 ready for the summer season – with the restaurant opening by Winter 2023. A detailed path has been agreed towards improving health and wellbeing across Neath Port Talbot over the next five years. Young business owner’s sweet gesture to people who’ve lost their hair

A young hair stylist from Swansea has been inspired to help people who’ve lost their hair for medical reasons after watching her own mum go through gruelling chemotherapy. Mandy Nicholls was diagnosed with breast cancer out of the blue last year and she had to undergo several rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy throughout the year. But it was her daughter, Grace Nicholls, who helped make the gruelling process more bearable. Read More

New Study: Type 2 Diabetes Drug Could Treat Autoimmune Disorders

Canagliflozin is a drug that controls blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, however researchers at Swansea University have found an unexpected role for the drug involving the human immune system. Read More

Hydrogen buses are being trialled in Neath Port Talbot and Swansea

An exciting demonstration of green zero emission public transport is underway in Neath Port Talbot and Swansea. Bus operator South Wales Transport and private hire operator Hyppo Hydrogen solutions are providing transport services to the communities using locally produced ‘green hydrogen’ made from renewable energy and local water. Neath Port Talbot councillors approve next stages in 16,000-job Celtic Freeport project

The next steps include creating a company to run the Freeport and setting up the decision making arrangement for investing the public funds provided by the governments to achieve the Freeport objectives. Neath Port Talbot Council Leader, Steve Hunt, said: “Freeport status will be truly transformational for this region. It will act as a catalyst for significant economic growth linked to the rapidly developing offshore wind sector and wider renewables agenda.” Read More

Big step forward in £4bn tidal lagoon, floating homes, battery plant and solar farm project for Swansea

Swansea Council is in the “final stages” of agreeing to lease a number of sites to DST Innovations, the company leading the Swansea Port Development Project. The project would be worth £114m a year to the local economy and create up to 2,500 full-time jobs. It could include a tidal lagoon, a floating solar facility, a hyper-scale data centre, an oceanic and climate change research centre, eco-homes anchored in the water, and a new district heating system. The Gower Field to Fork project has won the “Yummy award for the best local initative improving childrens food” at the Sustain: The Alliance For Better Food And Farming 2023 Childrens Food Summit in Leeds. University Becomes First in Wales to Reach Important Waste-Reduction Milestone

Swansea University’s commitment to sustainability and minimising waste has been recognised by the Carbon Trust. It has just become the first Welsh university to achieve the prestigious Zero Waste to Landfill certification. The Carbon Trust is a global climate consultancy driven by the mission to accelerate the move to a decarbonised future. Its Zero Waste to Landfill certification recognises organisations which demonstrate leadership in waste management. Read More

The students hoping to benefit from the vast renewable energy expansion planned for Wales

Ethan Adams and Jack Hale said they barely knew anything about renewable energy when they signed up to a brand new course at Pembrokeshire College, but that has changed. They now have a solid grasp of floating offshore windfarms, which are shaping up to be a significant source of jobs and investment in the Celtic Sea. People will be needed to assemble, install and maintain the turbines, connect them to the grid, and refine and improve their design. Read More

RWE deploy cutting-edge carbon capture technology at Pembroke Power Station

RWE has unveiled plans for three groundbreaking carbon capture projects, positioning itself as a trailblazer to decarbonise the UK’s power sector. Once realised, the project will facilitate the long-term generation of up to 2.2 GW of secure, flexible, and decarbonised power, capable of capturing approximately 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This staggering achievement is tantamount to removing one million petrol-driven cars from the roads. Read More

Hundreds of council homes in Swansea to get solar panels

More than 1,200 council homes in Swansea will have solar panels installed on their roofs over the next four years to help generate electricity and reduce the cost of energy. Around £26m has been set aside for the project which will see hundreds of PV solar panels installed and specialist batteries introduced to generate and store energy for electric power and light – energy which will be able to be used by individual residents “on demand”. Work has started on the £250m new Wildfox adventure holiday resort in the Afan Valley

The development will take a long time – with the man leading the project hoping it will be ready by 2027. But work has to start somewhere, and fencing and temporary footpath closures are now being set up. When it finally opens, guests will be accommodated in 570 lodges and 130 apartments and rooms, while enjoying a wide range of indoor and outdoor adventure activities such as wild swimming, mountain biking, hiking, canyoning, bouldering and more. Pioneering Learning Resource Helps Academic Win Top Teaching Award

Swansea academic Tom Wilkinson has been honoured for helping to develop inspirational ways of teaching immunology to students during Covid. Besides introducing immunology across all years and programmes, he was also part of the team which created a special set of resources for remote learning. This led to him being recognised at the British Society for Immunology inaugural awards and named one of the two joint winners of the Teaching Excellence Award. Read More

The largest and longest-running construction skills competition in the UK returns, as Gower College Swansea prepare to host 80-100 students for the SkillBuild 2023 South Wales regional heat. SkillBuild is delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and showcases some of the brightest talent, as highly skilled learners and apprentices go head-to-head to be crowned winner of their chosen trade.
