Pobl are one of 11 businesses who have signed up to the Swansea Bay Healthy Travel Charter, which through 17 ambitious actions, promotes walking, cycling, public transport and ultra-low emission vehicle use. The actions include establishing a network of sustainable travel champions within each organisation, developing targeted communications campaigns for staff, offering and promoting the cycle to work scheme and promoting public transport discounts. UWTSD appoints British entrepreneur Dominic McVey as Professor of Practice
Dominic McVey, a business leader, entrepreneur and humanitarian who started his own business at the age of 13, has been appointed as a Professor of Practice at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). His expertise will be pivotal in assisting the University to develop initiatives which aim to deliver economic impact to Wales, particularly in the digital and manufacturing sectors. He was also awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Jubilee Honours. Read More

Historic Welsh lido dating back to the 1930s could finally reopen in £1m project

A deal has been struck which will see £1.85m invested into Mumbles Pier. Detecting Viruses in a Pinprick
Scientists at Swansea University, Biovici Ltd and the National Physical Laboratory have developed a method to detect viruses in very small volumes. For many parts of the world that do not have access to high-tech labs found in hospitals, detecting viruses such as hepatitis C – could save millions of lives worldwide. In addition, biosensors such as this could be used at the point-of-care – opening effective healthcare in difficult-to-reach settings. Read More
Simple blood test could save thousands of lives from bowel cancer
A simple blood test that detects bowel cancer earlier is one step closer to being available on the NHS after showing excellent results in a trial. The Raman Spectrometry blood test has been developed by researchers at Swansea University. Results from the groundbreaking study involving 595 patients across West Wales showed 79% of early-stage bowel cancers and 100% of advanced bowel cancers were picked up by the test. Read More

The Swansea cafe offering a free three-course meal to anyone who needs it
The Phoenix Cafe in Townhill offers a “safe, welcoming space to share food and conversation” and is now serving free meals every Monday evening. The cafe aims to help strengthen the local community, enhance health and wellbeing, and ensure no-one goes without a hot, nutritious meal. Swansea chef converts her mobile café to run on solar energy after watching YouTube videos
A trained chef and barista in Swansea has managed to convert her mobile café enterprise to run entirely on solar power after self-teaching herself electronics by researching online and watching YouTube videos. Ashley Collins, sole trader of start-up Flynn’s Coffee, said “From the very beginning of starting the business, my goal was to operate on solar power. Most people said it wasn’t possible.” Read More
Tata Steel: Sewage converts CO2 to useful chemicals
The gases from the firm’s Port Talbot steelworks are mixed with tiny bacteria from sewage plant samples. The bacteria produce acetic acid, which is used to make chemicals for different industries. “Microbes have always been able to do it,” Dr Rhiannon Chalmers-Brown, from the University of South Wales, said “We are just taking them and using them in this way.” Read More

Historic launch is start of new era for Garden
The National Botanic Garden of Wales is celebrating the official launch of its Regency Restoration project after a year of record visitor numbers and huge approval ratings for its new attraction. The multi-award-winning, newly-restored landscape, which opened to the public in March 2021, has helped push the Carmarthenshire attraction’s visitor figure close to 200,000 – the largest annual attendance since the Botanic Garden opened in May 2000. New exhibition celebrates building of Star Wars Millennium Falcon in Pembroke Dock
A new exhibition celebrating the construction of the iconic Star Wars Millennium Falcon has opened at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre. The permanent installation tells the story of the building of a life-sized model of the starship for The Empire Strikes Back. “It was the worst kept secret in Pembroke Dock – everybody in the town knew they were building a UFO in the hangar and that period of time and that story is an important part of the town’s living memory” remembers Gareth Mills, a trustee of the Pembroke Dock Heritage Trust. The mural of the famous Port Talbot native, painted by street artist Walls by Paul is part of the town’s plans to bounce back from the loss of Banksy’s ‘Season’s Greeting’ artwork. The mural, which is located on Somerset Street Lane is another stunning addition to the town’s ever growing collection of street art. Carol Vorderman Supporting Nine Student Bursaries for Those Studying Mathematics at Swansea University
Carol, who grew up in North Wales in a single parent family and on free school meals, said that “mathematics in Wales changed my world for the better and I want in some way to help those who are trying to do the same.” The bursary is worth £2000 for each student. It will be open to all applicants for undergraduate degree programmes in Mathematics or Actuarial Science who will start their studies with Swansea University in September 2022. Read More

Also shortlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize and the Women’s prize for fiction 2021, Patricia Lockwood’s novel unpacks modern day internet culture and its impact on the individual psyche with immense sensitivity and surreptitious humour.
