UWTSD Master’s student and research centre collaborate to improve children’s medical procedure experiences

Adam Higgins worked with the Assistive Technologies Innovation Centre (ATiC) as he developed his bright and colourful animal-themed products, which are each specific to a certain medical procedure or examination. The products aim to teach, engage, and prepare children for procedures such as blood tests, heart and temperature examinations, and nebulisers for medication intake, offering  the child a sense of control and autonomy back over their healthcare. A new £10m Property Development Fund (PDF) aimed at boosting investment in the Port Talbot Waterfront area is now open with Neath Port Talbot Council seeking expressions of interest from companies, land owners and developers. The fund will specifically target the research, development and innovation sectors, with the aim of creating jobs across the area. Solar Swansea – A Feasibility Study

Swansea city centre has a large area of flat roofs that are currently wasted space. The idea is to install solar panels on these spaces so that we can make Swansea city centre an urban solar farm. Solar Swansea is a Swansea BID led project to create an urban solar farm on the flat roofs of Swansea city centre. They would attempt to secure government funding to install solar panels on as many of these flat roofs as possible. But they need your help!

West Glamorgan Regional Partnership – Housing with Care Capital Fund

West Glamorgan Regional Partnership (WGRP) are inviting statutory organisations, voluntary, community and other third sector organisations to submit an application to the Housing with Care Capital Fund for Minor Projects. Closing date for applications: 5pm, 8th July. Read More

Crowdfund Swansea provides a funding platform for residents and local groups to make their community projects a reality. Created in partnership between Swansea Council and crowdfunding platform Spacehive, it provides a springboard for local ideas. With pledges starting at £2, everyone can take part. New £750m plans to transform the centre of Swansea take a major step forward

Latest plans to transform the centre of Swansea with a series £750m developments, including a new seafront district, have taken a major step forward. Swansea Council has confirmed a 20-year partnership agreement – following preferred developer status last September- with regeneration firm Urban Splash, who will now take forward the projects and secure private sector backing. Proud to help Whiteford Point Lighthouse shine again

Whiteford Point Lighthouse shone for the first time in decades thanks to a great team effort from a number of volunteers including EFT Consult’s own Managing Director, Dave Kieft, and RD Group Electrician, James Mainwaring. The famous North Gower landmark was decommissioned in the 1920s, and has largely remained unlit ever since. It was built in 1865 by Llanelli architect John Bowen, and remains the only wave-swept cast iron tower of its size in Britain. Read More

Pupils create murals for Kingsway development site

Bouygues UK has welcomed pupils from Pentrehafod School to 71/72 Kingsway in Swansea. They were invited to view two new murals they helped create displayed in the construction site. Set to accommodate 600 workers, the ‘living building’ will include an urban farm style greenhouse, green walls and roofs, an educational facility, retail, offices, affordable apartments, a landscaped courtyard, rooftop solar panels, battery storage and gardens.

Proud to work with ISG on a landmark Swansea project

AB Glass are delighted to have completed work on one of the most prestigious and important projects in the city of Swansea in recent years. They worked alongside global construction company ISG for developer Fusion Students to deliver a new 17-storey building for student accommodation, which will have commercial space on the ground floor, opposite Swansea Train Station. The £65 million development will be home to 780 students. Read More

Dilapidated centuries-old building to be turned into a ‘tavern’ serving food and drink

An entrepreneur has been given the go-ahead to breathe new life into a dilapidated former warehouse in Llanelli town centre. Jonathan Swift is going to turn the building in Bridge Street into a tavern-style venue. Having researched the building as far back as 1730, he plans to name it The Margraves in recognition of the wine merchants who once traded from it. He said “I love buying derelict buildings, doing them up, and turning them into something.” Read More

Copr Bay Boost for Jobs and Economy

Construction of Swansea’s new £135m Copr Bay destination has led to a major boost for workers and businesses, according to new figures. A report by Swansea Council and main contractor Buckingham Group Contracting has found the project has supported 8,000 person weeks of employment, apprenticeships and trainee placements throughout the build of the new district, which includes Swansea Arena. Regeneration Specialists form JV for Swansea Site

Urban Splash has announced a joint venture with real estate developer Milligan for the transformation of the Swansea Central North site in the area of St Mary’s Church. Early proposals for the 5.5-acre site at the former St David’s Shopping Centre include new office buildings, shared workspaces, apartments and an area for small creative businesses to make and sell their products. First phase of the £199m wellness and life science village at Llanelli gets green light

Based at Delta Lakes, the first phase will feature a new leisure centre, hydrotherapy pool, 313-space car park, clinical and research space, education and business space, landscaping around the lake, and cycling and walking points. Thirteen trees will be cut down and 400 new ones planted. Further phases of Pentre Awel, which is one of nine Swansea Bay City Deal projects, will be considered at a future date. Read More

4theRegion has created the app to promote “buying regional”, which is one of our six impact areas. Businesses are now being encouraged to sign up to the app and list their products and services. Pop-up hub to support jobseekers

The first one-stop employment hub of its kind in Swansea is up and running in the Quadrant. Swansea Council’s employability service Swansea Working, together with its partners, has opened the pop-up hub in Unit 9 in the Quadrant Shopping Centre opposite HMV. It provides a range of support to help people in Swansea access the employment market. Services include; employer days, targeted employment events, training and much more. Read More

Introducing the Swansea City 2022-23 Home and Away Kits

The home kit prominently features the club’s classic and instantly recognisable white colours, but also includes a nod to the fan favourite kit from the 1992-93 campaign. In order to increase the exposure of local partners, Westacres will be the new front of shirt sponsor for the home kits. Long-term partner Swansea University’s logo continues to adorn the away kits. And, in a new three year deal, the Swansea Building Society logo will adorn the back of both shirts.

The tiny van serving up authentic Portuguese treats that’s become a hit in Swansea

In an area no stranger to large retail units housing all kinds of goods from furniture, electronics, toys and fitness centres – stands a tiny little food van hoping to make a name for itself. Venture down Valley Way in Llansamlet and you may miss it, opposite Smyths Toys Superstores and Simply Gym is Pastel de Nata. The Swansea bar that’s re-opening as an LGBT+ venue

Utopia – a cocktail bar familiar to many – has come under new management. General Manager, Matthew Thom, said “I wanted to do this from the get go as there’s really not anywhere people can go when it comes to an LGBT+ venue in Swansea. We’re looking to get a lot of queer performers and artists in. I want to be actively involved with the community. I want to try and actually give back to the community in Swansea.” Read More

Steelworker and engineer quit work to run a burger van and now have two shops

There is nothing better than a good burger and Marcin Sadlos and Jack Phillips, aka the Burger Boyz, know this probably better than anyone. 11 months ago both Marcin and Jack bought a burger van and began their business from scratch. The school friends now have a stall in the newly refurbished Newport Market and are opening a restaurant in their hometown of Port Talbot. Read More

‘House’ coffee bar and spa opens in Pembroke

House Cafe and Bar has opened in the former Co-op supermarket in Pembroke town centre. Described as ‘something a little different’, House provides a multi-use offering, including self-catering holiday accommodation, fresh artisan coffee and locally produced ice creams over the summer months. The establishment also includes an on-site spa which boasts a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and ice-cold plunge pool. Read More

Shops where nothing has a price tag and people can pay what they like open in schools

Two primary schools have launched special shops where no food, drink, household or toiletry product has a price. Instead, parents, carers and members of the community can choose how much they want to pay for items in their shopping basket. Ynysfach Primary School in Resolven,  Neath has launched “Siop Y Ddrag Goch”, and Port Talbot’s Central Primary School has joined the Welsh Government funded Big Bocs Bwyd project.

Surf’s up for 10-year-old Imogen thanks to UWTSD’s Cerebra Innovation Centre

Dr Ross Head and his team at the University’s Cerebra Innovation Centre (CIC) have adapted a surfboard for 10-year-old Imogen Ashwell-Lewis, who has cerebral palsy, so that with a little help she can ride the waves just like everyone else. The ethos of CIC is simple – if children can dream big, they can do big.  Read More

Algal Research Group (ARG)

Swansea University’s algal research group studies microalgae, cyanobacteria and macroalgae. They are interested in how algae function in a changing natural environment and how they can be used in biotechnology. This overlaps with more applied research which focusses on developing new products and processes especially within a circular economy. Read More

UK’s energy capital announces multi-billion pound low carbon plan

The major private and public sector players at the UK’s biggest energy port have announced a collaboration that will work towards the UK’s energy ambitions and create 3,000 jobs. The Milford Haven Waterway Future Energy Cluster, formed by a coalition between The Port of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire County Council, energy companies, green tech and renewable developers, aims to deliver a multi-billion pound investment platform for low carbon initiatives. Vodafone turns on UK’s first wind and solar-powered mobile phone mast

It will provide 4G coverage to the community of Eglwyswrw. The ‘self-powering’ mast, which potentially removes the need for a connection to the national electricity grid, could provide connectivity to ‘not-spots’ in the UK’s most remote and inaccessible locations – helping the industry achieve 95% of UK landmass coverage by 2025. Castell Howell stirs up a new low carbon menu

Castell Howell Foods have begun a new collaboration with Just Perfect Catering to devise a lower carbon menu enabling a sustainable blueprint to be created for suppliers and customers. “The sustainable food movement has become a driving factor in consumers’ decisions but as a result, it means that the food and beverage industry faces some unique challenges regarding sustainability,” said Kathryn Jones, Sales Director at Castell Howell Foods. Swansea visit to progress adventure park plans

Proposals for Kilvey Hill put forward by New Zealand based Skyline Enterprises include a cable car system, ziplines and luge runs as part of an attraction aiming to open in 2025. Standing 193 metres tall, Kilvey Hill in Swansea enjoys views over Swansea Bay, the marina, SA1, the Copr Bay district, the Liberty Stadium and the historic Hafod Morfa Copperworks site. Read More

Pembrokeshire to get its own LGBTQ+ pride event

Pembrokeshire Pride will kick off with a three-day festival in and around Boulevard Showbar on Charles Street in Milford Haven, with popular drag queen Miss Kitty launching the event on Thursday, July 14. The following night, Karin Bello will be performing her Tina Turner tribute, ‘Typically Tina,’ on Friday, July 15 before closing the celebration on Saturday July 16 with Jaymi Hensley from boyband Union J, fresh from his comeback gig at the London Palladium. Swansea Arena Welcomes Thousands of Visitors Since Opening

More than 50,000 visitors have attended performances, conferences and graduations at Swansea Arena since its opening in March, according to newly released figures. The arena opened as part of the £135m Copr Bay district developed by Swansea Council. Run by the Ambassador Theatre Group, people who have taken to the stage at the 1,500-capacity venue include Alice Cooper and The Cult alongside John Bishop and Royal Blood. Read More

Technology Boost for NPT Schools & Libraries

The unique ‘:bits & PCs’ scheme being launched later this year will offer young people in the area training using laptops and micro:bits with the aim of creating enthused, enabled and skilled coders across Port Talbot, Neath and Pontardawe. It will also see Neath Port Talbot Library staff and teachers from participating schools given the chance to learn new digital skills and taught coding and microbit programme delivery. Read More

Hospitality Group Provides Enterprise Education Programme to 3 Swansea Schools

The Secret Hospitality Group is providing the Bumbles of Honeywood enterprise education programme to three local primary schools – The Grange Primary School, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llwynderw and Brynmill Primary School. Created by Swansea-based 2B Enterprising Ltd, The Bumbles of Honeywood is a suite of bilingual resources mapped to the national curriculum to help primary schools embed enterprise skills into their day-to-day learning.
