Pembrokeshire Outdoor Health Project

Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum, in collaboration with Coed Lleol, recently concluded a highly successful series of outdoor health programmes. All the participants said they would continue to use woodlands and outdoor spaces for recreation. Starting in July, they will run 8 six-week programmes across Pembrokeshire, facilitated by a diverse mix of skilled practitioners to serve as social prescribing opportunities, as well as being accessible by self-referral. Peter Lynn Appointed as Swansea BID’s New Chair

Peter Lynn, commercial lawyer and founder of one of Swansea’s largest law firms, Peter Lynn and Partners Solicitors, has been appointed as the new Chair of Swansea Business Improvement District. Swansea BID, a democratically elected organisation that represents over 800 businesses in the city centre, were the first BID in Wales and since 2006, they have helped make Swansea City Centre a better place to shop, study, stay, visit and do business. Nature Finance Review 2023: PCF Highlight

As we navigate a biodiversity and nature crisis, it’s vital to explore innovative solutions for nature recovery across terrestrial and marine environments. The work of Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum around nutrient trading through the Ecosystem Enterprise Partnership is highlighted as a case study in the Nature Finance Review 2023. Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum wants to see continual water quality improvements while allowing development to play a role in restoration, and they are excited to be highlighted in this report.

Swansea Council is seeking suitably qualified contractors to provide environmental facilities works, co-production support for the Swansea Co-Production Network, an event booking system, domestic rewires, food waste caddy liners, the replacement of a walkway roof covering at Gelli gardens sheltered housing complex, the refurbishment of an artificial turf pitch at ELBA Sports Complex, and the supply and installation of renewables at the West Cross phase 6 EWI scheme.

Working with Nature

The Countryside & Wildlife Team (C&W Team) of Neath Port Talbot Council intend to undertake a project this year focusing on habitat management and restoration on local places for nature around the county, particularly local nature reserves. The Council is seeking to appoint the services of contractors to carry out site and habitat management works across 20 sites in Neath Port Talbot, and help to engage local people with local places for nature.

Framework Agreement for the Supply of Aviation Fuel

Pembrokeshire County Council wishes to enter into a framework agreement with suitably experienced suppliers to provide regular quotations as and when requested for the supply of aviation fuel to its airport located at Fishguard Road, Haverfordwest. Read More

Swansea Waterfront Apartments Scheme Backed

An apartments scheme within a masterplan for the Swansea Waterfront site has secured approval. Proposals from Everstock Development Ltd and Coastal Housing Group include 104 affordable dwellings, including 39 one-bedroom two-person apartments, 53 two-bed, three-person apartments and 12 three-bedded five-person apartments. The development would range between four to six storeys. Listed former cinema building in Swansea could be turned into apartment block

An historic listed former cinema building looks set to take on a new lease of life with plans lodged to transform it into a mixed scheme of commercial units and 30 residential apartments. Castle Cinema was opened in Worcester Place in 1913. It finally closed as a cinema in 1991, and is now in use as a Laserzone. The building has become dilapidated over a number of years and now requires investment to ensure its longevity and is brought into an exciting use. Read More

Former department store threatened with demolition could now be turned into flats instead

A former department store and office block threatened with demolition has been bought by a Swansea housing association. Coastal Housing Group wants to convert the old Ty Gwalia building into affordable flats for rent. Over the years The Kingsway site, near the junction with Dillwyn Street, was the House of Kent department store and an Evans Rees Butter packing factory. More latterly it was a Gwalia housing association office, which closed four years ago. Read More

Llandelio’s Old Market opens its doors once again

Constructed in the 1830s, the provisions market had been a key part of Llandeilo’s history up until 2002 when it became disused. The market hall, revamped in a £4.2 million project, will provide a mix of high-quality modern office and business employment space with an onsite café and parking. The modern facility is expected to accommodate 45 jobs and 4 traineeships. Read More

Swansea University Wins Funding to Increase Skills in Net Zero Across South West Wales

Swansea University is set to play a key role in shaping the skills needed for the workforce to achieve Net Zero, after gaining funding from the Swansea Bay City Deal’s Skills and Talent programme. The Net Zero Wales (NØW) Skills project aims to create a knowledge exchange network to support the region’s businesses, schools, FE and HE institutes in readiness for the future across the key emerging sectors of energy and manufacturing. Work Starts on UWTSD’s New Centre for Digital Innovation and Enterprise

The Innovation Matrix is central to the UWTSD’s ambition in Swansea and will provide a platform to stimulate growth for Wales’ expanding digitally empowered economy. A new Mediterranean restaurant is opening in Swansea Marina named after the owner’s mum

Realising how popular dishes from other Mediterranean countries were, Juan Hernandez decided to start adding extra dishes to his menu at El Pescador and explore whether another restaurant would be just as popular as his first one. Loli’s Mediterranean is named after his beloved mother, Loli, who taught him to cook many years ago. After growing up on Gran Canaria, Juan moved to Swansea 20 years ago to learn English and soon fell in love with the city. Read More

New vending machine project promotes Pembrokeshire produce

A pilot project to bring the first fresh food vending machines to Pembrokeshire now has two 24/7 fresh food vending machines stocking local produce up and running. The food team from PLANED have co-ordinated the project under the banner ‘Pembrokeshire Fresh Community Vending’. The project promotes quality local produce at a competitive price enabling local people to benefit, as well as generating income for local enterprises and businesses. Read More

Teras Bar, serving Pembrokeshire produce, opens at Coast, Saundersfoot

Pembrokeshire oysters and locally-produced wine are amongst the offerings at the county’s newest seafront bar. Teras Bar, ‘showcasing amazing local ingredients in a casual setting’, has just opened overlooking Saundersfoot Bay. It’s been launched by the award-winning Coast restaurant, on whose terrace it stylishly sits and is offering guests ‘an unrivalled al fresco experience’. Read More

Groundbreaking Research Examines How the Sequence of Disease Acquisition Affects Life Expectancy

In the UK, it is estimated more than 25% of adults have two or more long-term health conditions. This increases to almost 82% for those aged over 85. This has major implications for the NHS and social care. This research supports a targeted approach for the prevention or delay of multiple health conditions for effective future healthcare planning. The study team was led by Associate Professor of Statistics at Swansea University Medical School Dr Rhiannon Owen. Read More

Clynfyw Care Farm: powering Big Green Week and Community Energy Fortnight

Clynfyw has always taken action on tackling climate change and installing the solar system is part of that journey. As electricity costs have gone up such a lot, the panels will save money as the Care Farm is paying Egni Co-op 60% less per kWh compared to their main supplier – this reduces running costs and enables them to continue our work more sustainably. The farm supports adults with learning difficulties and those recovering from mental unwellness. Read More

Secretary of State opens Neath Port Talbot’s award winning energy positive Bay Technology Centre

The Bay Technology Centre at Baglan Energy Park is a step change in approach to building design, providing what is in effect a building as a power station – the first commercial facility in Wales that is energy positive in operation. The 25,000 sq ft centre hosts office and laboratory space for start-up companies, Welsh businesses and inward investors looking for a base to set up and grow their operations. Read More

Researchers Develop New Innovative Heat Storage Material for Enhanced Energy Efficiency

The ability to recover and store otherwise-wasted heat from various sources, including industrial operations and the summer sun, presents an exciting opportunity in the quest for sustainable and affordable energy resources. The new heat storage material, developed by a team involving researchers from Swansea University, marks a significant step forward in realising this potential. Read More

Swansea Council’s first ever solar farm gets the green light

A total of 5,500 panels will be installed on 11 hectares of land at the former Tir John landfill site, Port Tennant. Electricity generated by them will help power a wastewater treatment works a mile away. Longer term the council wants to use all of the land at Tir John for solar panels. The electricity generated by the expanded solar farm could potentially be used to generate hydrogen to power hydrogen buses. Read More

Climate change: Robots help seagrass restoration

Seagrass is known for its ability to store carbon and provide nurseries for fish. Up to 92% of UK seagrass has been lost, but Wales could lead on restoration, conservationists have said. The Welsh Government said it would discuss how to further support seagrass restoration. Project Seagrass, WWF and the Swansea University said the country could also produce methodology that could be applied across the world. Read More

The festival at a Welsh castle being held on one of the ‘most beautiful sites in the UK’

The world’s first trail running and music festival, Love Trails Festival, returns to the Gower. For four days, festival-goers can enjoy a “cherry-picked” selection of DJs and live acts including rapper Biig Piig and drum and base DJ High Contrast, inspirational talks and workshops, coasteering, surfing, wild swimming, yoga, and non-competitive runs ranging from 3km to 55km, at the breath-taking site of Weobley Castle in Llanrhidian. Record-breaking Museum of Land and Speed opens in Pendine

On September 25, 1924, Malcolm Campbell set a world land speed record of 146.16 mph as he raced his precious Sunbeam 350HP Blue Bird across Pendine Sands. Now Campbell’s achievements, plus those of many other racing drivers who set new records in the early 20th century, are being recognised at the recently opened Museum of Land and Speed at Pendine. Swansea continues flying the flag for nightlife safety

Swansea’s nightlife scene is keeping the Purple Flag flying over the city for a ninth consecutive year. It’s one of only two places in Wales that can fly the flag which highlights how visitors can always expect an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out. Swansea was the first in Wales to achieve the accolade. The successful bid highlighted a wide range of reasons why the city centre is the place to be now and in the future. Read More

New university and college partnership to empower learners and employers to access higher technical skills across Wales

As the economy of Wales recovers and employees struggle with the cost of living crisis, the partnership will bring together the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Coleg Sir Gâr, Coleg Ceredigion, CAVC Group, NPTC Group of Colleges, and Pembrokeshire College. It will establish a network of University of Wales Technical Institutes to deliver a programme of higher technical qualifications across economic and social priority sectors driven by employer need. Read More

The scheme is in partnership with Ysgol Bryngwyn School, Ysgol Coedcae School, Ysgol Penrhos School, St John Lloyd RC Comprehensive and Ysgol Y Strade. It represents collaborative working to inspire young learners and improve their knowledge of career pathways and universal skills needed in the workplace. Adventure Filmmaking student collaborates with Western Beacons Mountain Rescue to produce a documentary

Scott Beckett decided to follow the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team’s day to day work for a short documentary as part of his coursework. Mountain Rescue has always been an organisation that Scott has greatly admired. When he discovered that he had some time to dedicate to a film project, he decided to produce a video that would not only support his coursework but also an organisation that it could mutually benefit. Swansea Soars to Highest Ever Position in Global University Rankings

Swansea University has soared 118 places to be ranked joint 307th, its highest ever position, in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings 2024. The 20th edition of the QS World University Rankings is released by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds and names the world’s 3,000 best universities. This latest ranking positions Swansea among the top 21% in the QS World University Rankings. Read More
