Swansea Creative Focus Advent Calendar
Day Thirteen: 13/12/2019
Next May sees the 40th anniversary of the release of the ground-breaking horror movie Friday the 13th. It was a low budget success, filmed not in Hollywood but on the streets of New Jersey. It made far more money than many costlier films released that year and has since spawned eleven sequels and generated over half a billion dollars in cinema ticket sales around the world.
It’s one of the great examples of independent cinema success, and that’s something our friends at Cinema & Co will certainly identify with. This popular Castle Street venue provides an alternative to chain-owned multiplexes and the people of Swansea welcome it with open arms.
As well as offering an excellent cinematic experience, with a huge screen, first rate sound system, a licenced bar and far more comfortable seating that many movie fans will be accustomed to, Cinema & Co is also a thriving event venue. Swansea-dwellers seeking the right atmosphere for events as diverse as business meetings, childrens’ parties, product launches and gaming tournaments have found it at 17 Castle Street.
But first and foremost, it’s a movie theatre. And if you’re looking for an immersive, thoroughly enjoyable movie experience, this is the place for you. As you’d expect, fans of Christmas films will be well catered for over the coming two weeks. Classics including White Christmas, Frozen, Home Alone, Love Actually, The Polar Express and Miracle on 34th Street are all on the menu. And Christmas Eve sees two separate screenings of Elf, with a side order of Mamma’s Pizza thrown in for sustenance.
Yes, these movies may be on TV over the holiday period, but if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them on a big screen at a venue where every member of staff is a customer service wizard and a true cinema lover, this is your chance to experience something special.
When independent movie-making is done well, the result is a piece of work that reaches out to the audience and engages them in a way that generic big-budget films often struggle to do. The same applies to independent venues. Cinema & Co is your local movie theatre. This is as good a time as any to pay it a visit.
