An Engineering Alumni Conference and Reunion will take place at UWTSD’s Swansea campus on February 10 to inspire and engage students by hearing first hand from graduates about the opportunities within the industry. £20,000 secured by PLANED for Pembrokeshire Youth Voice Project

ACES, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, are traumatic events, particularly in early childhood that significantly affect people’s health and well-being in later life. The CWBR Youth project works to give young people more of a voice in their communities, and in this initiative will bring Town and Community Councillors together with local young people to raise awareness of ACES, and co-design ways that they can help tackle them. Carmarthenshire County Council is seeking to appoint contractors to deliver a residential scheme on an 8.4 acre council-owned greenfield site, two miles to the west of Carmarthen Town Centre, provide quarry products throughout Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, and, as part of the Families First programme, services in relation to parenting support (conception to 19 years), and term traffic signal maintenance of traffic signals in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

Cwmpas require an equipment refresh for a number of their staff. In line with their procurement policy to refresh equipment, where possible, at 3 year intervals. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) wishes to tender for an artificially intelligent (AIS) chatbot solution to support a higher education funding council for Wales (HEFCW) project starting in March 2023. More than 100 affordable flats and cafe set to be built in Swansea’s SA1

Everstock Development Ltd and Swansea-based Coastal Housing Group want to develop the brownfield site off King’s Road, SA1. The building would include a cafe facing across a square towards the Ice House. The plan is for 104 affordable one, two and three-bedroom flats, two gardens, undercroft parking for 86 cars together with 17 electric vehicle charging points, and 60 indoor bike spaces. Air-source heat pumps and solar panels might generate heat and light for the flats. Read More

Coastal continues High Street regeneration plans with purchase of historic Kings Arms Tavern

Coastal’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration, Kelly Thomas, said “It’s an important building, both historically for Swansea and in terms of Coastal’s options for further development in High Street. Our focus right now is on upgrade works to restore the listed building to its former glory. We haven’t made firm decisions on its future but would be particularly keen to encourage applications for businesses serving the local LGBTQ+ community.” Read More

Swansea skatepark latest pictures as project almost completed and opening date in sight

Work at the Llwynderw site, near Blackpill, is expected to finished this month with a formal launch in April. Before redevelopment began the skatepark consisted of one dreary-looking mini half-pipe but this was dismantled and the project has transformed the skatepark beyond recognition. The park now follows the sloping profile of the site and the surrounding land will be landscaped with trees retained and picnic tables, bins, and a supply of drinking water. Read More

Swansea’s beloved old Castle Gardens to return with a new greener look for the square as plans are agreed

Council planning officers have approved a scheme to add more trees, lawns and other greenery, and to create two pavilion buildings for food, drink or retail businesses. There will also be a new water feature, seating areas and a large television above a bandstand-style facility. It’ll be a modern, functional and well maintained public space which can accommodate a range of events, arts and cultural experiences. Read More

Huge interest in just 15 homes being built above a stunning bay in one of Swansea’s poshest areas

The Meadows will offer a selection of contemporary, semi-detached and detached three and four-bedroom homes which are described as perfect for family living. There will also be an open space with seating for residents to enjoy. As well as the private sale homes, there will be 16 affordable homes as part of the development. Eight of these will be available for immediate tenure and the other eight will be up for social rent through Coastal Housing. Read More

The huge and complex job of saving Swansea’s historic Palace Theatre

Construction specialists are working hard to deliver a smart new look for Swansea’s historic Palace Theatre, and to save a slice of the city’s past at the same time. But it’s not easy! The structure was built in 1888 and, in its long history, it has undergone a series of interior makeovers resulting in a complex rabbit warren with steep, winding staircases and numerous spaces of different shapes and sizes. Major changes to Swansea prom will start within weeks with builders on site

The improved sea defences will protect homes, businesses and leisure areas from the effects of rising sea levels for the foreseeable future. The aim is to be sensitive to Mumbles as a seaside visitor destination while protecting people and property. In line with the public’s wishes, it will reflect the area’s heritage and culture, will improve biodiversity and will allow cyclists and pedestrians to use the same exceptional prom space – and share with care. Swansea’s £1bn transformation continues into 2023 and beyond

New office space in the old Oceana nightclub with space for 600 tech workers and a new Penderyn whisky visitor attraction are among the Swansea projects set for completion in 2023. Led by Swansea Council, the projects at the Hafod Morfa Copperworks and former Oceana nightclub sites are among those forming part of a £1bn city-wide regeneration programme that’s continuing at pace. New office development build reaches street level

Developed by Swansea Council, initial building work for two basement floors of the 71/72 Kingsway scheme has been completed, paving the way for construction of three more storeys at street level and above. Bouygues UK are main contractors for the project, which once complete will be carbon zero in operation and worth £32.6m a year to Swansea’s economy. It will include 114,000 square feet of commercial floor space featuring flexible co-working and networking opportunities. Read More

The Romanian-inspired bakery with a talented teenager at the heart of it

A new bakery in Neath opens its doors this month. Rosa’s Bakery offers artisan bakes with a Romanian twist and the chef behind it all is 17-year old Rosa Cundill. As a toddler, Rosa served cakes made of plasticine to her family, and later learnt recipes from her mum Rosana, who is originally from Bucharest. Having discovered her passion for baking and Romanian food, she is now opening her own bakery with her parents and younger brothers at her side. Read More

The burger shack that has set up camp in a car park next to McDonald’s with its own unique menu

Tucked away in a corner of Hancock and Brown car park in Swansea lies a food van with a difference. Snack Army is proving to be a go-to for Swans fans who want a meal from a menu designed as an ode to some of the club’s legends. Interestingly, it operates within a stone’s throw of McDonald’s on Fabian Way, but owner Nigel Griffiths said: “It’s not a challenge. If anything we are probably more of a bind to them. For £4.50 you get a bigger and more filling burger.” Read More

New milk and milkshake vending machines open in Swansea city centre

A fresh milkshake vending machine business that made UK-wide headlines for innovation during the pandemic has set up in Swansea city centre. Hendy-based Llaeth Beynon Dairy has set up the vending machines in the area of the former St David’s Shopping Centre, close to the bottom of the new bridge over Oystermouth Road. Customers can buy either milk or 12 flavours of milkshake, which can be poured in free takeaway cups or reusable glass bottles. Read More

The brothers who’ve opened a coffee shop just yards from their childhood home in Uplands

David and Harrison Lees decided to follow their passion when they saw a former osteopath business for sale. They named their coffee shop Sloth Coffee Co. after the notoriously lazy animal to reflect the chilled, laid-back atmosphere they wanted to create. It really is all about the coffee, with a selection of special guest roasts available each day. £100,000 Funding Boost for CADR to Support Older Adults with Hearing Loss

The CADR Programme at Swansea University has received funding to help boost essential evidence and understanding around creating appropriate, social, sustainable, and resilient places for older adults with hearing loss. The team are currently looking for study participants, including individuals aged over 50 with hearing loss, and people who work in the retail, hospitality and transport sectors, with the ability to influence their work environment. Swansea University Featured in Flagship Net Zero Report

Swansea University has been named as the only university in Wales to have featured in the “Accelerating towards Net Zero” report – the first of its kind which highlights target areas for emissions reporting and reduction. The report includes case studies of a student led project to create provisions for biodiversity and carbon capture on campus, the UK’s first energy positive classroom, and a project to reduce off campus carbon emissions. Read More

UK’s Energy Capital Maps Out Low Carbon Vision in Wales

The Milford Haven Waterway Future Energy Cluster, supplying 20% of the UK’s annual energy demand, has mapped out a vision to drive a 30 year multi-billion pound investment platform to deliver a secure, resilient, low carbon future. The Cluster outlined how their plans will play a pivotal role in enhancing the wellbeing of future generations and in helping the Welsh Government achieve a just transition to net zero in Wales.  Read More

Once land is secured the community take over but It is really tough finding it within a walk of where most people live. Yet food, sanity, exercise, peace of mind have to be worth more. They would save millions in police, medication, ambulance, and social worker bills. In 2022 Grwp Resilience managed to start up two community gardens in Pembrokeshire, while Ecodewi and Ffynnonne Resilience set up community gardens in St. Davids, Cilgerran and Blaenfoss. Read More

Tidal lagoon, floating solar farm and battery manufacturing plant ‘will be delivered’ in Swansea

Blue Eden is being taken forward by Batri Ltd and DST Innovations with support from the council. The phased project at SA1 aims to deliver an electric battery manufacturing plant and battery storage facility, a tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay and floating solar farm within it, a data storage centre, a green hydrogen production facility, an oceanic and climate change research centre, and hundreds of waterfront homes. ‘World’s biggest escape room’ of its kind to open in Swansea

Swansea will soon be home to the “world’s biggest and most unique” 60-minute escape room as staff are gearing up to open it to the public this month. Plantasia Tropical Zoo in Parc Tawe retail park in the city centre is already home to a wide range of tropical plants and more than 40 animals and it will soon house a huge escape room experience, named Jungle Escape, too. BBC newsreader Huw Edwards immortalised in mural form in Llanelli underpass

An underpass in the village of Llangennech in Llanelli has been covered with eye-catching murals, including one of the area’s favourite sons, Huw Edwards, the village church, the crests of Llangennech’s football, rugby and cricket clubs, Morlais river, Morlais colliery and a miner, a steam train, and a huge name of the village. It’s the work of local artist Steve ‘Jenks’ Jenkins, who has become renowned for his stunning work in the area. Read More

The corner of Wales named one of the world’s best travel destinations

Pembrokeshire has beaten the likes of Fiji, Santorini and the Bahamas to be named in the world’s best travel destinations list. Famed for its glorious beaches and rugged coastline,  Pembrokeshire is one of only 10 UK destinations in the “Leading Places: The 100 Most Loved Travel Destinations Around the World” list. Read More

Rembrandt painting on display at Carmarthenshire Museum in Abergwili

The art piece, called Saskia van Uylenburgh in Arcadian Costume will be able to be viewed by the public until April 23 and has been loaned by the National Gallery in London. Rembrandt  is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists of all time and one of the most important in the history of Dutch art. The loan of the painting to Carmarthenshire, is part of the National Gallery Masterpiece Tour 2021–23 and admission to the museum in Abergwili is free. Read More

The legendary Swansea student nightclub that’s returning with a massive £1m revamp

Rebound nightclub, known by many as ‘Tooters,’ on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus is set to be “reinvigorated” thanks to a massive £1million investment. The new and improved venue will host regular events and nights out for students, as well as become the showroom for live performances from the University’s performing arts societies and a space for the Students’ Union and University societies and groups to host events, exhibitions and activities. Coleg Sir Gar launches newly refurbished training restaurant in Carmarthen

The ethos of the restaurant celebrates provenance, sustainability and local produce and has a new look, designed with student input, which offers a contemporary, homely and professional dining experience. Cegin Sir Gâr is based at the college’s Pibwrlwyd campus in Carmarthen, within a building which originates from 1920 and where a catering college has been serving the community for the past 60 years. UWTSD is the first University in Wales to invest in Immersive Rooms to create an interactive experience for students

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is collaborating with industry leading AV providers to install two innovative, state-of-the-art immersive rooms, providing its students and partners with world leading learning spaces which transform education. Once complete, these learning spaces will allow students to experience immersive virtual reality, 360° videos and images. Read More
