The future of Swansea’s Wind Street: Fly-through video
Swansea Council has revealed what Wind Street is expected to look like as it undergoes a major revamp, via a virtual fly-through video. The footage shows a “modern welcoming Wind Street” with outdoor seating areas, vast greenery, performance areas and lighting as part of the £3m upgrade. The former Debenhams store in Carmarthen has been transformed into a space for pop-up local businesses in the run-up to Christmas, bringing the largest retail unit in the town back to life. The former Debenhams unit, along with number one Stepney Street in Llanelli, have been offered to small local businesses as a chance to “display and sell their goods amongst big high street chains”. A new pub is opening on the old Mumbles Mile

Stinky Boys has been opened in Swansea’s Castle Arcade by Ryan Jenkins, the entrepreneur best known for edgy chicken wing business Hot Damn. Wales’ bathing waters deliver 100% compliance record for fourth year running
Of the 105 bathing waters sampled by Natural Resources Wales, 85 achieved the highest classification of excellent, 14 good and six sufficient ensuring that Wales’ coastlines continue to meet some of the most stringent water quality standards in Europe. A classification of excellent water quality is one of the main requirements for applying for a Blue Flag award for 2021. Read More
Offshore Wind farm plan floated for Port Talbot
Associated British Ports owns five ports in the south of Wales but said that the deeper waters off the shore of Port Talbot would make it the best choice for such a scheme. Trail hunting is banned on National Resources Wales owned land
Natural Resources Wales has banned trail hunting on its land after a senior huntsman was convicted of using the sport as a “smokescreen” for illegal fox hunting. The Welsh Government-sponsored body, which manages large swathes of countryside and forest, follows in the footsteps of the National Trust, whose members voted to impose a ban in late October. Work begins on the redevelopment of Pembroke Port to harness opportunities from renewables
Part of the £60 million Pembroke Dock Marine project, the redevelopment will create a world-class energy and engineering centre of excellence and act as a focal point for capturing the economic value from wind, wave and tidal renewable energy projects. The first phase of works is the renovation of the four Grade II listed Hangar Annexes attached to the historic Sunderland Hangars at Pembroke Port to create flexible modern workspaces and a workshop. One of Wales’ largest hospitals is now being powered by a huge solar farm
The £5.9m development, at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, is the first in the UK to be directly wired to an acute hospital. Commissioning work on the 10,000-panel solar farm at Brynwhillach Farm was completed in October. The 4MW farm will supply about a quarter of Morriston’s power, cutting the electricity bill by approximately £500,000 a year and significantly reducing carbon emissions. Read More
Sustrans Cymru to deliver e-bike and e-cargo bike loan schemes in Swansea
E-Move, a pilot scheme to help people swap their cars for an electric bike, is being rolled out in Swansea. Electric batteries assist pedalling, boosting speed up to 15.5mph. They can help people tackle hilly terrain, carry children and other loads, and go for longer distance cycling cycle trips. The scheme is run by the walking and cycling charity Sustrans. Electric-cargo bikes will be available for free to businesses and community organisations in Swansea. Read More

Fishpond Power – Margam Country Park Turbine Restoration Creates Renewable Energy Source
The historic turbine house located in Margam Country Park has been restored to once again provide electricity for the Margam Estate. The Turbine house was built in 1891 for Emily Charlotte Talbot, who commissioned the development of a hydro-electric scheme powered by a nearby fishpond. The original turbine generated enough electricity to power 400 lamps. It is thought Margam Castle was the second domestic dwelling to have electricity in Britain. Read More

Swansea-based Gavin Griffiths Recycling has scooped a prestigious Growing Business Award 2021 – B2B Business of The Year – at a glittering ceremony in London. Part of the Gavin Griffiths Group, the firm, which has its headquarters in Llangyfelach and expanded this year into a site in Carmarthen, was praised by judges for its “innovative approach to waste management, recycling and aiming for zero landfill,” as well as its “fantastic community engagement.” Read More
The 100% Recyclable Meat Tray – New Packaging Does Away With Throwaway Absorbent Pads
A Swansea researcher has invented a new type of plastic packaging for raw meat which avoids the need for non-recyclable pads inside the trays to soak up the juices, meaning the whole of the packaging tray can now be recycled. The new packaging is already in use in mainstream UK retailers, helping to increase recyclability of more than 800,000 tonnes per year of food plastic packaging generated by UK supermarkets. National Botanic Garden of Wales wins international award
The Regency Restoration project is this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers People’s Choice. The award recognises civil engineering projects that have made a positive impact on their local communities. The project, which took five years to complete at a cost of more than £7m, is the largest of its kind undertaken in Wales and includes two new lakes, bridges, dams, cascades, a waterfall and an extensive network of paths, all set in 300 acres of wooded parkland. New maps reveal huge potential for future cycling routes in Swansea
Swansea’s network of cycle and shared-use paths could grow exponentially. The council has consulted on a draft active travel network map for the county, which could lead to more space being dedicated to cyclists and walkers. From Pontarddulais in the north, Mumbles in the south, Birchgrove in the east and Llanrhidian in the west, a spider’s web of dotted orange and blue lines appear on the map indicating potential future routes. IRONMAN announces Swansea as new host city for IRONMAN 70.3 TRIATHLON
IRONMAN has announced that it will add a brand-new event to its 2022 global race calendar. The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea triathlon will take place on Sunday, August 7, 2022. Athletes will take on a 1.2-mile (1.9km) swim at the Prince of Wales Dock before cycling a one-loop 56-mile (90km) bike course. Lastly, athletes will take on a 13.1-mile (21.1km) two loop run course which takes them from the city centre , out past the new eye-catching gold-coloured Swansea Arena, towards Mumbles before heading back towards the finish line at the Marina.
