Welcome to Codi Group

The not-for-profit organisation formed through the merger of Pobl Group and Linc Cymru has confirmed its new name: Codi Group. Codi is the Welsh word for ‘Rise’, recognising the deep-rooted Welsh identity of the new Group and its desire to meet the expectations of customers and the opportunities that lie ahead.  Managing close to 25,000 homes, the Group has ambitious plans to deliver more than 4,500 new homes over the next five years. Read more

Bouygues UK Delivers Outstanding Social Value at Llanelli’s Pentre Awel Project

Bouygues UK has overdelivered on its social value commitments and targets during the build – including more than 400 extra weeks’ work for trainees or new entrants into the industry. The Canolfan Pentre Awel team has made it a priority during the nearly two years on site, to enhance the lives of the people in Carmarthenshire, providing career opportunities, improving education and skills, engaging with the local community and supporting local businesses. Welsh Government land deal to deliver new social homes in Swansea

The plots, D5B and D9B, have been sold to housing associations who will develop them to bring forward new social homes. Plot D5B has been purchased by Pobl, who will build 35 apartments and eight houses on the site. Plot D9B has been purchased by Beacon Cymru, who plan to develop the land to provide 26 social homes. These new homes will make a real difference to families in the area and will be developed to the highest standards our communities deserve. Read more

Historic buildings at Swansea copperworks site to be transformed

Swansea-based civil engineering firm Andrew Scott will start work on site this year to transform the Vivian and Musgrave Engine Houses and the V&S No.1 Locomotive Shed at the former Hafod-Morfa Copperworks. The V&S No.1 Locomotive Shed, a listed building that served the copperworks, will be made safe and watertight. The engine houses – both listed – will be made suitable for a range of uses, including restaurants and cafes, exhibition-style space and shops. Read more

Work to begin on Port Talbot’s Civic Square and Princess Royal Theatre

The project aims to rejuvenate and modernise the 798-seat Princess Royal Theatre by improving customer experience with new cafes, an extension to the southwest of the building, a remodelled bar and an auditorium entrance lobby with a large, modern foyer. The Civic Square will be transformed into a multi-purpose community space with features such as new seating and significantly improved green spaces with extensive tree and shrub planting. Read more

Derelict Pembrokeshire Roch Gate Motel to be redeveloped

A multi-million pound scheme to redevelop a derelict motel, described as “one of the last true blots on our county’s landscape” with the promise of creating 18 jobs, and even bringing back a post office lost after the Horizon scandal, has been approved. The former Roch Gate Motel will become a mixed commercial and community use hub called ‘The Gate,’ including a village shop/post office, bistro/restaurant, and a tourism development of 18 holiday lodges. The five ways a beloved Swansea park is about to be enhanced after funding boost

The project, titled Improving Singleton Park – Gwella Parc Singleton, will begin this month and aims to boost the park’s facilities, biodiversity and community engagement. It will install new picnic benches, plant mature trees, introduce informative nature and park information boards and provide resources for volunteers. Read more

New Princess Quarter office building launches in Swansea – offers panoramic views over the city centre and waterfront

A new office building scheme has been completed in Swansea, adding 15,000 sq ft of Grade A office space in the city centre. Developer Kartay has extensively redeveloped the four-storey 1950s Princess Quarter office building on the corner of Princess Way and St Mary Street into a high quality addition to the city’s skyline. The scheme includes retail units on the ground floor and three storeys of office accommodation above. Read more

New investment in regeneration boosts growth and jobs in Port Talbot

A new investment of £21.2m from the UK Government will support jobs in Port Talbot. This is the latest allocation of funding from the Tata Steel /Port Talbot Transition Board which benefits Swansea Bay City Deal’s Supporting Innovation and Low Carbon Growth programme. Read more

BT Awarded Contract for Better Broadband Infill Project

The Digital Infrastructure Programme is pleased to announce that BT in partnership with Openreach has successfully been awarded the delivery contract for the Better Broadband Infill Project. The £10+million project will bring full fibre broadband to 1533 premises and an additional 256 sites across the four counties in the Swansea Bay City Region: Pembrokeshire, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire. Swansea City unveil plans for new city centre sports bar

Named ‘The  Swansea Jack’, the bar will open at Salubrious Place, Little Wind Street, opposite the Swansea Museum and Morgans Hotel, and is expected to be up and running ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. The bar’s name is a direct nod to a pub of the same name, which was located near the club’s former home at the Vetch Field, and was a popular matchday watering hole for many Swan fans. Read more

Secret bar inside a bar where you have to ring a buzzer to get in

The Dog & Piano in Carmarthen remains open as normal on Friday and Saturday nights, offering live music, karaoke, and a traditional pub experience. But to the right of the bar, as you enter the building, you’ll see a closed door with a doorbell, behind which you’ll find Bar 316, a luxurious and mysterious ‘speakeasy’ cocktail bar transporting customers back to the 1920s with a late-night, private, exclusive feel. Swansea café named among the best in the world 

A café in Swansea described as a “golden oldie” has been named among the best in the world. A list of the top 50 cafés in the world has been released by The Telegraph, featuring coffee shops from locations like Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna and Australia. Kardomah was ranked 13th on the list and was described as a “golden oldie” providing a “nostalgia fix” for its visitors. See why

A jacket potato shop is proving so popular that people are queuing out of its doors to get their hands on their fix just months after it opened its doors. Self-confessed foodie Jessica Williams first started her business selling jacket potatoes in a horsebox in May 2023, looking to fill the gap left behind when one of her favourite childhood restaurants closed. In January of this year, she decided to take the plunge and open her first physical business, Spuddy Lovely. Read more

Seafood restaurant will be added to marine centre of excellence

Catch Cymru, an established, independent seafood business based in Carmarthen, with a strong reputation for high quality takeaway seafood, is now looking to expand by opening a second restaurant in Saundersfoot. The Saundersfoot restaurant will offer a broader menu, including seasonal grilled and barbequed fish, fresh salads, and a variety of side dishes to cater to a wider demographic, to include halloumi fries, corn on the cob etc. Read more

Welsh mum’s ‘crazy’ idea inspires world-first surgery

A mum’s “crazy” idea after a second cancer diagnosis has led to her undergoing a surgical procedure believed to be a worldwide first. Nicola Purdie, a secondary school teacher who lives in Swansea with her husband and two children, received her first diagnosis at Singleton Hospital five years ago. She had a bilateral mastectomy. All seemed well after Nicola had that procedure. But in 2024, while she was pregnant again, the cancer returned. Read more

Swansea-led project could transform clot treatment

Researchers are developing a cutting-edge blood test, which has the potential to improve patient treatment and reduce pressure on the NHS. The team led by Professor Karl Hawkins, alongside colleagues from Swansea University and NHS clinicians, is investigating how blood clots respond to stress, an innovative approach that led to the discovery of a key biomarker, paving the way for a next-generation blood test. Tegan Cowen has opened Elysian Escape in Pembroke, offering bespoke massage and holistic therapies. Her mother Rhian said “I am bursting with pride. I have two incredible girls – one is studying at Cambridge University and the other has set up her own business. Tegan has only just opened but she’s already getting five-star reviews. Tegan has always been a very kind person who wants to help people. It makes her feel good to make other people feel good.” Read more

Council to trial ‘bio-goats’ in overgrown churchyard

Goats have been introduced as an eco-friendly way of keeping a churchyard in shape. Narberth Town Council in Pembrokeshire is trialling using the animals at St Andrew’s Church to clear excess growth around gravestones and across the site. The goats are kept in their designated areas using GPS. It is hoped the goats can be used as a natural and chemical-free method of managing overgrown areas and for controlling brambles and invasive vegetation. Read more

Record breaking puffin numbers on Skomer Island

It’s been another record-breaking year, with 43,626 puffins recorded on Skomer Island, bucking the trend of decline seen globally in puffin populations. The growth in Skomer Island’s population is likely linked to the abundance of food in the wider area, meaning there is plenty of fish for chicks resulting in high breeding success. The absence of rats and other predators on the island has undoubtably contributed to the success of seabird populations on Skomer. Read more

Coal mine flood water used in first heating scheme

Flood water from a disused mine is being used as a renewable source of heating for the first time in Wales. A business near Ammanford has started pumping water from a nearby mine water treatment site to heat their warehouse. The water runs at a constant 14C to 15C, which is taken to a heat pump, compressed to a useable temperature for heating the building, and this will heat the building all year around. Read more

Three giant wind turbines planned near Bluestone

Detailed proposals have been submitted for three towering wind turbines – each standing at 328ft – near Bluestone holiday park and the former Oakwood theme park. Should approval be given, the trio of 1MW turbines are expected to produce enough electricity to supply around 1,900 households, according to the applicants. While the energy would feed into the national grid, investigations are ongoing into direct usage possibilities for nearby businesses. Read more

WWF announces £1m project to unlock power of seaweed in Pembrokeshire

WWF-UK has received £1m in funding for a three-year project to harness the power of seaweed off the West Wales coast – which could help in the fight against climate change. The funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, will allow WWF-UK and partners to work with coastal communities in Pembrokeshire to develop a model of community-led regenerative seaweed farming that benefits local communities, nature and climate. Read more

Return of summer coastal bus services

Two popular bus services have returned to the Pembrokeshire coast. The Puffin Shuttle (service 400, operated by Richards Bros) runs between St Davids and Marloes, via Little Haven, Druidston, St Brides and Martins Haven (for boat trips to Skomer Island). The Strumble Shuttle (service 404, operated by Richards Bros) runs via the coast road between St Davids and Fishguard, including Abereiddy (for the Blue Lagoon), Porthgain, and Strumble Head. Port Talbot steel used to make Urdd crown and chair

Steel from Port Talbot steelworks was used in the designs of the two of the most prestigious prizes for the Urdd Eisteddfod, the chair and crown. The chair features a combination of Welsh steel and flat steel produced in Port Talbot. Angharad Pearce, who designed the chair, said it was a “dream come true”. The crown, designed by Nicola Palterman, also uses material from the steelworks and features diamonds for the first time. Read more

The powerful ‘steelworks eye’ street art which has appeared in Port Talbot

It’s sometimes the most simple concepts that are the most impactful. This beautifully intricate artwork of an eye holding an image of the steelworks at Port Talbot is a stunning, intricate piece of art certainly packs an emotional punch, that will resonate with the local community who have suffered a huge blow with thousands of job losses at the steelworks. The artwork was painted in the town by globally renowned street artist My Dog Sighs.

A company is offering an entirely new way to see South Wales at night

If you’re looking to enjoy an activity with a difference, then the night-time kayaking experience might be the perfect thing for you to add to your summer bucket list. It’s located on Neath Canal. You can explore the canal for an hour at a time at your own pace as the sun goes down, meaning you can enjoy the activity during sunset if you are looking to enjoy some relaxed vibes. Read more

Food festival with ‘world’s biggest bouncy castle’ coming to Welsh country park with 8-mile beach

Street Food Circus is coming to Pembrey Country Park on June 21 and 22. On top of the award winnig street food line-up, there will also be activities at The Pleasure Gardens, including the “world’s biggest bouncy castle”, Mexican wrestling, the Incredibly Clever Canine Circus, the Big Bubble Disco, Splatch Circus School, axe throwing and Kiss My Putt crazy golf. On June 21 the Pembrokeshire Fire Spinners will perform an evening fire show finale. Read more

Wales’ premier food and drink festival returns to beautiful setting

Wales’ premier food and drink festival returns to Margam Country Park in Port Talbot this September. The Great British Food Festival will see a whole roster of chefs and food experts ready to demonstrate tricks of the trade alongside street food vendors preparing the most mouth-watering global cuisine. The Artisan Market is a great way to discover new producers including vegan and gluten-free treats amongst the many stalls. Read more

Palestinian debut author Yasmin Zaher wins world’s largest prize for young writers with ‘borderless’ novel, The Coin

Yasmin Zaher has been revealed as the winner of the world’s largest and most prestigious literary prize for young writers – Swansea University’s the Dylan Thomas Prize – for her debut novel, The Coin. The Coin draws on Zaher’s personal experiences to dissect nature and civilisation, beauty and justice, class and belonging in a vivid exploration of identity and heritage. Read more

Kelly Fountain appointed Chief Executive Officer of Gower College Swansea

One of Wales’ largest further education colleges, Gower College Swansea, has appointed Kelly Fountain as its new Chief Executive Officer. Kelly, who has served as the College’s Principal since January 2024, will transition into her new role following the retirement of current CEO Mark Jones MBE, this summer. Kelly brings over 20 years of experience in the further education sector across both England and Wales. Read more

Swansea joins UK’s first university network for women entrepreneurs

Swansea University is among the first partner members of a new national network for women entrepreneurs. Five universities, led by Imperial College London, will join the WE Innovate National network which will run programmes to support 150 women-led teams each year across the participating institutions. NPTC Group of Colleges Takes Major Step Forward in Establishing FLOW Training Academy

NPTC Group of Colleges has taken a significant step towards establishing the UK’s leading Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) Training Academy with the appointment of Celtic Sea Power to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. This milestone follows the College’s successful bid for funding through the initial round of The Crown Estate’s Supply Chain Accelerator, enabling in-depth research into the current landscape of FLOW training. Baboons walk in line for friendship, not survival, new study finds

Baboons often travel in structured line formations known as ‘progressions’ as they move through their home range. Previous studies offered conflicting explanations for this behaviour. Now, using high-resolution GPS tracking, researchers from Swansea University have found this isn’t about avoiding danger, or for better access to food or water. They simply move with their friends. A new Food and Drink Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship course is launching at Pembrokeshire College, in collaboration with the Food & Drink Skills Wales programme. By providing practical, hands-on training, this course will equip individuals with the expertise needed to thrive in the vital food and drink production and manufacturing sectors, ensuring a strong and sustainable future for our region’s food and drink landscape. CISM and Space Forge deal to help pioneer gravity-defying tech

Swansea University and Space Forge, pioneers in space-based advanced materials manufacturing and return technology, have signed a major deal, making the company the first to be physically hosted in the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM), where it will undertake cutting-edge work in manufacturing in microgravity – the near-weightless conditions found in space. Technocamps, Swansea University’s flagship STEM outreach programme, is celebrating a double win at the SheCanCode STEM Educator Awards, taking home top honours in Not-For-Profits in STEM Education and STEM Role Model. Carmarthenshire market town set for affordable housing boost

Social housing provider Pobl Group has secured planning permission for an 84-home estate in Llandeilo. Pobl Group said the 84 energy-efficient homes were much-needed and that the scheme incorporated greenery and wildlife where possible. “We look forward to delivering this development which will provide high-quality homes for local people in a truly beautiful setting,” it said. Where £2.8m will be spent on skate and BMX parks in Swansea

The first of 17 skate and BMX facilities that will be upgraded or created in Swansea is now open. It’s an upgrade of the existing skate park at Coed Bach Park, Pontarddulais. Improvement work, meanwhile, is underway to the skate park at Parc Melin Mynach, Gorseinon. Swansea Council is investing £2.8m in neighbourhood skate parks because it will help meet demand while also raising Swansea’s profile as one of the UK’s best destinations for wheel sports.  Read more

Plans approved for £20 million research centre

The facility, named the South Wales Industrial Transition from Carbon Hub, or SWITCH building, will be located in the Harbourside area of Port Talbot as part of the Swansea Bay City Deal. Virgin Media O2 Business has completed building a dark fibre network loop across eight university sites in Swansea. The Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme announced the dark fibre networks. Nicolai and Poliana Kostadinova have made their “dream come true” by opening The Old Arcade Cafe. Tata subsidiary UKSE exceeding targets on support to firms following ending of heavy steelmaking in Port Talbot

Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE said a support programme launched in response to the ending of heavy steel making at Port Talbot has exceeded expectations with some £3m invested having created 400 jobs to date. Using AI and data analysis to tackle drug-resistant epilepsy – Swansea University and King’s College London secure £1.1 million funding 

Epilepsy is a common condition affecting at least 600,000 people in the UK. Around 30% of people with epilepsy do not respond to medications. This proportion of people with drug-resistant epilepsy face increased risks from seizures, memory and mood problems. This project will use state-of-the-art natural language processing, artificial intelligence and routinely collected data to understand more about, and who will develop, drug resistant epilepsy. Solar farm plans receive go-ahead from council

Proposals to build a new solar farm on agricultural land in Neath Port Talbot have been approved by the local authority. The structures could now be built on land at Dreamfields, Llandarcy, on the western side of the of the B4290, around 1.8km away from Briton Ferry and 800m south-west of Jersey Marine. Once completed the site will include a ground mounted solar PV array with a capacity of up to 1.3MW. Read more

Plantasia has launched a unique escape room experience called Jungle Escape: Poachers’ Lair. Mysterious new feature is being added to Mumbles prom and this is why

Work has recently commenced on applying a durable buff-coloured top layer over the previously laid black asphalt, mirroring the finish seen at the Amy Dillwyn Park adjacent to the  Swansea  Building Society Arena. A grassroots music venue in the heart of Carmarthen has unveiled a stunning mural which celebrates the town’s rich cultural heritage. The mural on the side of the CWRW music venue and pub, features names of musicians, creatives and comedians who have put the town on the map – including Rhod Gilbert, Elis James, Datblygu, Adwaith and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. What Neath’s new transport hub could look like under ambitious plans

Images of a how a proposed new transport hub in the centre of Neath could look have been revealed. The new hub would be located at the front of the Neath Train Station, where it will be designed to bring together bus and rail services and make journeys easier. It would serve as a “striking new gateway to Neath town centre, encouraging people to visit, shop, work and explore.”

Swansea city centre to get padel courts

A Swansea-based padel court venture has submitted plans for its first city centre venue with it actively looking for additional sites on the back of the racket sport’s growing popularity. Pure  Swansea Padel has lodged a planning application for two new courts at Foresters Yard (formerly Pilkington Glass) The business is owned by property and investment group Swansea.com and former Swansea City FC footballers Leon Britton, Lee Trundle and Kurtis March. £780,000 to create a new arts hub in Swansea city centre

The former JT Morgan department store has been vacant for over 15 years and this renovation will transform it into a multi-purpose arts centre. Elysium Art Limited, supporters of 4theRegion, is delivering the project to support and promote the arts in Swansea and beyond. The first and second floors will provide lettable studio space for artists, with a gallery, meeting spaces and a café on the ground floor. The basement will have additional studio space, storage and potentially a cinema. Read more

Almost 100 new homes are being built in one of the best places to live in Wales

Planners have given the green light for a new estate of 91 houses to be built in Narberth, over 40% of them being affordable homes. Asbri Planning Ltd says “The design led approach will create a high-quality place, that sensitively sits within the site retained wildlife corridors and positively connects to the community of Narberth.” Narberth was previously highlighted as the best place to live in Wales, and “a town centre that punches far above its weight”. Three Welsh firms awarded contracts to help deliver new £1.25bn electric arc furnace at Port Talbot

The contracts will sustain more than 300 jobs. Critical infrastructure will be completed by 4theRegion supporters Andrew Scott. David Evan Williams, civil contracts director, said: “Having worked major on civil and construction projects at Port Talbot since the late 1800s, our involvement in this transformation is not only a privilege, but fundamental to maintaining our strong presence and heritage at the site. We have committed to supporting local talent.” Read more

Plans unveiled for new transport hub in Llanelli

Plans are in place to transform a piece of land next to a busy Welsh railway station into a transport hub which will contain bus, walking, cycling, and electric vehicle and parking facilities. The scheme has been developed in conjunction with Network Rail and Transport for Wales as the council seeks to promote the use of sustainable transport for journeys in to and around Carmarthenshire’s largest town. Read more

New Mumbles’ sea defence scheme to provide huge boost for businesses

A number of new enterprises are busy attracting customers as a multi-million pound project to protect a Swansea community from the effects of climate change nears completion. The new arrivals range from a health and fitness centre to a contemporary outdoor lifestyle shop to a travel agency and hope to provide a shot in the arm for Mumbles after two years of works on sea defences along its famous promenade. Swansea Named Among UK’s Best Places for Property Investment

The city came in third place in a Sunday Times list of places that are on the up in 2025, thanks to a combination of major regeneration schemes, strong culture and hardworking communities. The Sunday Times points to regeneration schemes like the Swansea Building Society Arena, which it says has added extra cultural clout to a city that already includes the Grand Theatre and Brangwyn Hall, along with energetic grassroots theatre, art and music scenes. New café offers stacked sandwiches named after famous films

Darkside Café is the latest addition to Swansea’s culinary scene having opened its doors at Park Street in the city centre. The new business specialises in coffee, cakes, and thickly-filled ‘stacked’ sandwiches, many of which have Hollywood themed-names, such as “underground favourite” The Fight Club, made up of turkey, bacon, cheese, tomato and spicy mayo, and “time-travelling classic” The Mac to the Future filled with mac and cheese. St Davids Fish and Chips shop opens to help the community

Jay Babahan opened St Davids Fish and Chips on St Davids High Street on February 11. The business owner, who has lived in Pembrokeshire for 25 years, said: “We have wanted to help the local community for a long time. We use produce from local farmers such as potatoes and fresh fish. We are happy to be in St Davids. We want to grow our business, and we want to show we are the best fish and chips shop around.” Read more

American diner-style restaurant with Xbox coming to Narberth

The Smash Patty Company has opened at Grace Court in Narberth. Co-owner Terri Elliot said: “We’re an American diner where children and families can go after school to enjoy a milkshake and a burger. We are excited and hoping it’s going to go well. We are planning to put an Xbox in there so children can have FIFA competitions and play some board games. Even if someone can’t afford any food, they are welcome to relax in our venue.” Read more

Pioneering study examines cold water therapy’s potential to treat PTSD

Scientists at Swansea University have embarked on a groundbreaking study to examine whether cold water immersion (CWI) therapy can alleviate PTSD. One in 10 people in the UK experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Yet despite its prevalence, there has been limited research undertaken into the condition in the UK, and to date, no scientific study has been conducted anywhere in the world that explicitly examines the impact of CWI on PTSD symptoms. Welsh ports in running for floating wind farms

Swansea, Port Talbot and Milford Haven have been shortlisted for contracts to develop offshore wind farm projects with turbines as high as skyscrapers in the Celtic Sea. The turbines could be up to 300m (984ft) tall – almost as high as The Shard in London – and sit on a football pitch-sized platform. The projects will be capable of generating enough renewable energy capacity to power more than four million homes, and would also create up to 5,000 jobs. Read more

The Crown Estate in new round of £50m fund to bolster UK’s offshore windfarm supply chain

The Crown Estate’s current offshore wind leasing round five expected to deliver up to 4.5GW in the Celtic Sea. Each of the three proposed schemes will have capacity to generate 1.5 GW of power and collectively deliver a gross valued added boost for the UK economy of £1.4bn and create and support more than 5,000 jobs. Recipients in Wales in the first round included Marine Power Systems, Pembroke College and Neath Port Talbot Group of Colleges. Read more

Native oyster success story on the Milford Haven Waterway

Braving a strong easterly wind, students from Paddle West (assisted by Sky the dog) successfully deposited 20,000 baby oysters onto the seabed. While not all will survive, many are expected to take hold and contribute to the recovery of the native oyster population. Once abundant in UK waters, native oyster populations have dramatically declined due to habitat loss, pollution, over-harvesting and disease. Read more

Branching out: Swansea Building Society expands tree-planting initiative at Penllergare Valley Woods

Swansea Building Society has expanded its commitment to environmental sustainability by planting over 800 native trees and shrubs at Penllergare Valley Woods estate over two days. A team of 28 Swansea Building Society staff members took part in the initiative over the two days, which also included the clearance of invasive non-native plant species such as rhododendron and laurel. Facility to give new life to old tyres with Welsh Government support

Tuf Treads, in Carmarthenshire, will save old tyres by using them to produce premium re-treaded tyres using latest manufacturing technology. Re-treading gives suitable tyres a new start once the original tread is worn away. The new initiative helps Wales fulfil its net zero commitments by producing high quality tyres from recycled, used tyres that otherwise would be in landfill. The new factory in Cross Hands will see 30 new jobs created. Read more

Shining a light on positive things happening across the city is a key objective of 4theRegion

So bringing together movers and shakers from Swansea’s grassroots music venues to discuss the achievements and challenges of our music venues was a real highlight. One of the challenges was the lack of late night transport out of the city following events. A recent campaign between local grassroots venues and Swansea Building Society Arena resulted in Transport for Wales adding an additional late night train so gig-goers can catch the end of their shows. A commemorative Blue Plaque Scheme to celebrate notable people, places and events across Neath Port Talbot has opened for submissions. The budget for the provision of two plaques per year will be covered by the council. However, if you can self-fund a blue plaque, you can submit a nomination. This Blue Plaque Scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for our communities to celebrate local heritage and ensure these stories continue to inspire future generations.” Read more

Inside Swansea’s newest hotel apartments with a food court directly beneath them

You can now stay at Swansea’s historic Albert Hall, with ten self-catering apartments unveiled featuring a special nod to the building’s past.  The apartments are dog friendly and are all named after notable people who performed there, such as Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, with blue plaques outside each door offering guests more information. Guests who stay there also have access to a workout area and games area. Read more

Pembrokeshire oysters gain top UK recognition in PGI status

Two of Wales’ finest seafood delicacies – the Pembrokeshire rock oyster and the Pembrokeshire native oysters – have officially been awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which is the UK’s mark of authenticity, regional identity and quality. This recognition celebrates the pristine waters and rich biodiversity of Angle Bay, at the mouth of the Cleddau Estuary, where they are grown in Class A waters surrounded by seagrass beds. Read more

Figures show Swansea Building Society Arena success since opening – stars have included Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper with The Hollywood Vampires

More than three quarters of a million people have visited Swansea Building Society Arena since it opened three years ago, outperformng initial projections. Opening in March 2022, the arena has hosted a huge number of ticketed events, conferences, exhibitions and university graduation ceremonies. With 24 races across 21 countries in 5 different continents, Formula 1 is a multi-billion pound sport attracting a global fanbase of around 750 million. Swansea Pantomime

Swansea Grand Theatre is a large theatre in South West Wales that was opened in 1897. The theatre is owned and maintain by the local authority. The theatre facilitates a number of large scale productions through to smaller amateur shows. It is a large venue with a main auditorium that has the capacity of seating 1,020. HVM Catapult officially opens South Wales site in Baglan – aims to “supercharge innovation in Welsh manufacturing”

The facility in Baglan is designed to “supercharge innovation in Welsh manufacturing”. It is expected to unlock up to £18m in additional GVA annually within five years by helping manufacturers improve their productivity, efficiency and sustainability through the adoption of digital services. The site, located at the Bay Technology Centre in Port Talbot, will be home to manufacturing equipment funded by the Welsh Government. Read more

Plan for 10 new homes on former site of school in Neath Port Talbot approved

The long-term proposals, which were handed in to the authority by developers at Asbri Planning in August 2022, could now see 10 residential properties built on the former Gwaun-cae-Gurwen primary school on Water Street. If taken forward they would be built on the brownfield site located near the centre of the village that is said to be approximately 0.35 hectares in size. The old school buildings have already been demolished. Read more

Prominent Swansea building once threatened with demolition now has new destiny

Morganstone will add two new floors to the former Ty Gwalia building, 7-13 The Kingsway, and a rear garage knocked down and replaced with a six-storey apartment block. This will create 48 new flats, managed by Beacon Cymru, along with three ground-floor commercial units. The main building will feature a new central atrium and glazed rooftop louvres. There’ll also be rooftop solar panels and a green roof area, along with a green internal wall. Read more

Inside the grand cinema building which harks back to a bygone era

Cross the threshold of a Swansea gem which thousands of people once queued to get into and you step back in time, and then forward again. Castle Cinema was built shortly before the outbreak of the First World War and went on to screen films for nearly 80 years before being reused as a laser game venue. Plans to convert the building into 30 flats and two commercial units – including potentially a restaurant in glass side extension – take you to the present day.

Celtic Freeport officially launches in economic growth boost – plans will create more than 11,000 jobs

The Celtic Freeport has been officially launched, bringing significant inward investment to South West Wales and thousands of jobs a step closer. The freeport covers Milford Haven and Port Talbot and spans clean energy developments, fuel terminals, a power station, heavy engineering and the steel industry across South West Wales. It is set to attract £8.4bn of private and public investment, deliver 11,500 jobs and add £8.1bn of GVA to the local economy. Read more

£8 million for Port Talbot growth and regeneration project

The South Wales Industrial Transition from Carbon Hub will redevelop a four-acre site at Harbourside, Port Talbot. This investment will help establish an Innovation District. This will allow the development of a new facility targeted at supporting the steel and metal industry and supply chain to reduce carbon emissions in production. The facility is expected to create and support more than 100 jobs and eventually benefit the South Wales economy by £87m. Read more

First tenants announced for new Swansea office development

IWG and TUI will be taking up space at the 71/72 Kingsway scheme that’s now been handed over to Swansea Council. Further positive announcements are anticipated in the coming weeks. Developed by Swansea Council, Bouygues UK led on the construction of 71/72 Kingsway. Part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal and the Welsh Government, the 104,000 square foot scheme includes office spaces and shared workspaces, alongside an event hall and spaces for food and beverage businesses. Bouygues UK achieves net zero at its Pentre Awel project site

This includes over 90% reduction on direct emissions of all fuels on site and a 10% reduction in waste production, and energy and water consumption. Since the start of the project over 450 tonnes of carbon have been saved thanks to this initiative. The pivotal milestone of being net zero was made by implementing energy, waste and resource-saving initiatives, including adopting sustainably-certified HVO as a fuel, and sourcing recycled and green materials. You’ll soon be able to have coffee and pizza in an old church in the centre of a busy roundabout

Take a first look inside the church in the middle of a roundabout in Swansea, which Andrew Shipley, of ADI Design, has transformed. Inside, there is a new 48-cover cafe, and a separate 60-70 cover restaurant with a pizza oven installed ready to serve up Italian meals. Original features have been retained, including stained-glass windows, with plush looking flats above. 

Award-winning baker serves up treats in new eatery

Award-winning bakes in a colourful and quirky atmosphere are being served up at a newly-opened eatery in Pembrokeshire. Customers from all over south and west Wales have been making a bee-line for Nicci’s Yard – not just because everything on offer is scrumptious, but because it’s all gluten-free. “The response has been incredible,” said Nicci Barber, who spent a year transforming a former pub and chip shop at Llanddewi Velfrey for her new venture. Welsh bottle shop and bar wins top UK award

Beer Park has been named the best independent beer and cider retailer at the prestigious Drinks Retailing Awards. Dave Timbrell-Hill, owner of Beer Park, said: “We still can’t quite believe this – Beer Park was dreamed up in the middle of lockdown to bring all the beers I loved to Llanelli, Fortunately, others also loved these beers, and this award is really for all the customers who’ve kept us busy for the last four years. New cafe and Ethiopian restaurant coming to Swansea city centre

A cafe by day and Ethiopian restaurant in the evening is coming to a busy Swansea street. Andrew Douglas, Swansea BID Manager, said: “It’s fantastic to see vacant units, like the former Lee Mill shop on Oxford Street, being transformed into vibrant new businesses that add diversity and character to our city. We’re delighted to welcome this new cafe and restaurant, which will bring something fresh and exciting to Swansea’s food scene.” Read more

The cafe asking customers to ditch phones and laptops

Phones and laptops have been banned one evening a month in an attempt to encourage customers to have more meaningful interactions. Helen Wilson, owner of Ground Plant Based Coffee in Brynmill, said wanted to offer “a space for people to connect”. She said the response to the cafe’s “offline nights” had been positive so far, adding: “There were strangers sat on tables together, and a lot of skill sharing such as knitting and crocheting.” Read more

This is officially the best new restaurant in Wales

The Shed has been named one of the UK’s best new restaurants. Located on Swansea’s Waterfront the fine dining venue which uses the best of Welsh produce, has recently been crowned one of Condé Nast Traveller’s Top New Restaurants of 2024. The restaurant opened its doors in February 2024 when Swansea-born Jonathan Woolway decided to leave his role at one of London’s highest regarded restaurants to bring top quality dining to his home city. Building society dating back to 1923 hails “record” results – achieves highest growth in assets in its history

Swansea Building Society achieved double digit growth in its total assets, mortgages, savings and capital for the fourth year running, despite what it described as a “difficult economic environment”. The Society said this was “vitally important”, as it provides greater reserves to support members achieve their financial goals. Alun Williams, chief executive of Swansea Building Society, said the Society’s future has “never been brighter”. Surgeon’s world-first invention will help cut risk during breast reconstructions

An award-winning surgeon at Morriston Hospital has scored a world first by inventing a surgical instrument designed to improve patient safety. Consultant plastic surgeon Muhammad Umair Javed created a microsurgery dissector, for use during breast reconstructions. Now in the prototype stage, the dissector has smooth, blunted edges, allowing surgeons to separate, or dissect, blood vessels without the risk of accidentally cutting them. Read more

Michael Sheen says ‘I can’t walk away’ as he uses his own money to write off £1m of people’s debts

The star, who was raised in Port Talbot, spent two years working on a “secret” project, focusing on the debt and credit industry. Michael Sheen said “It didn’t look like it was going to happen for a long time and financially, things have changed. Ironically, I genuinely am not sure if I can afford to do this. How footballers’ fingers and height can predict their exercise performance

With the UEFA Women’s Euro just a few months away, new research involving Swansea University is focusing on female professional footballers. Regarded as the preferred fuel for nerve and muscle cells, vigorous exercise results in the release of lactate into the blood stream but high levels may indicate that the body is in a state of stress. Read how scientists are trying to predict how much lactate a person will produce based on their finger length and height. 

CIRCULAR ECONOMY & ENVIRONMENT

Work to start on major solar farm in Pembrokeshire

The 8.6 megawatt solar scheme will comprise over 14,000 solar panels. Shawton Energy has announced that the solar farm, situated at West Farm, Cosheston, near Pembroke Dock, is expected to commence clean energy production later this year. Once operating at full capacity, it will generate enough green electricity to power 2,500 homes annually, saving more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon each year. Read more

Plans submitted for wind turbines close to holiday park

The first stage of a potential scheme for three 328-foot high wind turbines have been lodged with Pembrokeshire county planners. Agents Sirius Planning Ltd say the turbines, each producing 1MW of power, would – in total – generate enough electricity to provide power for 1,900 homes, adding: “It is anticipated that the proposed development could provide power to local businesses such as Bluestone Holiday Park Resort.” Read more

Vast solar farm the size of more than 120 football pitches proposed for Carmarthenshire

The site, between Ferryside and Llandyfaelog, covers a total area of 90.5 hectares. To put that into context, the average football pitch is about 0.7 hectares. The proposed project by Qualitas Energy would generate enough energy in its first year to power approximately 10,770 homes and reduce carbon emissions by around 9,961 tonnes annually. This would be enough to power almost all the homes in Kidwelly and St Ishmael, Trimsaran, St Clears and Carmarthen. Read more

Scheme submitted for potential 20MW solar farm near Haverfordwest

The early stages of a scheme for a potential 20MW solar farm just a mile from Haverfordwest which it is said would provide power for 6,000 homes has been submitted to county planners. Amberside Energy Ltd submitted a scoping opinion to Pembrokeshire County Council for the proposed solar farm and grid connection on land close to Haverfordwest Golf Club, just off the main A40 road, ahead of a formal application. Roll up for a really big new attraction at Aberavon Seafront!

Neath Port Talbot Council has entered into an agreement with long established fairground company Studts Events Ltd to bring a spectacular, 118ft high ‘big wheel’ ride to the Aberavon Seafront this year. The Big Wheel at Aberavon will enjoy spectacular views across the Bristol Channel and Swansea Bay. The ride will operate in the summer months up to 2027 and will be accompanied by a series of fun fairs at the seafront run by the same company. Read more

Swansea Skyline attraction approved

Kilvey Hill is around 630ft high with panoramic views of the city and Swansea Bay. Skyline Enterprises wants to build a gondola lift running up the hill to a food hall and outdoor terrace. There would also be a sky swing, a zipline sending riders out on a 1km loop, and two luge tracks and a linking track. Planning agent John Hurley said it would attract an estimated 450,000-plus visitors per year, create jobs, improve access to the hill, and result in a net biodiversity gain. Read more

Swansea’s first-ever vegan festival will be held this summer

Vegan Events UK has announced the festival will be held at the LC Swansea on Saturday, May 31. Taking place from 10.30am until 4.30pm, it will feature 60 stalls, world food caterers, and talks and workshops throughout the day. It promises to provide “the ultimate inspiration for vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians, those thinking about going vegan or wanting to include more vegan products in their diet.” Read more

Bluestone holiday park reports best-ever January bookings

A popular Pembrokeshire holiday park has reported its best-ever January bookings. Bluestone National Park Resort has seen a 15 per cent year-on-year increase in bookings for 2025 since Christmas Day. William McNamara, CEO of Bluestone, said: “Pembrokeshire is becoming a real alternative to busier UK holiday hotspots like Devon and Cornwall, offering some of the country’s best beaches, fantastic food and drink, and a wealth of activities for all ages.” Read more

Free bus travel for people in Swansea announced

People living in Swansea will be able to travel for free on the bus for the Easter holidays, it has been announced. Starting on Saturday, April 12 and ending on Sunday, April 27, the city’s council has organised a total of nine days where passengers will not be charged a penny. It will offer families the chance to make the most of what the city has to offer, including trips to the city centre, a trip to Mumbles and other parts of the Gower coast. Find out more

Rediscovering Myrddin: Early Merlin poems reveal the poet and prophet behind the myth

The earliest known poetry about Merlin, referred to as Myrddin in Welsh, has been made accessible to the public for the first time and reveals that, contrary to popular belief, he was not a wizard but a poet and a prophet deeply interested in the natural world. Over the past three years, a team of academics has edited and translated more than 100 poems about the legendary figure, some dating back to the 10th century. Read more

Work begins on new future for former Swansea department store

The JT Morgan building on Belle Vue Way has been empty for years but contractors are now on site. The man behind the project said. Dan Staveley, founder and director of Elysium gallery and studios, which occupies four other buildings in the city, said phase one of the scheme would consist of a new roof, lift, fully accessible entrance and the creation of 63 artist studios on the first and second floors. 70 new homes will be built on land next to Parc y Scarlets

70 new homes for social rent are on their way to Llwynhendy, Llanelli thanks to a new development by Beacon Cymru, part-funded by the Welsh Government’s social housing grant scheme (SHG). The site, which is adjacent to the Scarlets’ home ground, is one of the first to enter development stage since Beacon Cymru was formed in January 2025 by the merger of established community landlords, Coastal Housing Group and RHA Wales.. Take a look at the site 

Swansea’s old police station is being put to a new use

A former police station is the latest building in Swansea which will be converted into accommodation for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Swansea Council is working with social housing landlord Pobl Group to convert the grade two-listed former central police station on the corner of Orchard Street and Alexandra Road into temporary supported accommodation. Amphitheatre to be built ‘where last dragon in Wales was killed’

Plans for a new amphitheatre overlooking the River Teifi – close to where, according to myth, the last dragon in Wales was killed – have been unanimously approved. According to Cllr Ken Howell, who represents Newcatle Emlyn,”It used to take the food of the local people, so was a nuisance, so they attacked the dragon and killed the dragon.” A flood, he said, then took its remains away. Inside Swansea’s new living building where people will grow crops and enjoy stunning views

Take a first glimpse inside Swansea’s new “living building”. It will house roughly 120 residents, 350 people working in the commercial office spaces, plus ground floor businesses, an exhibition space, and education zone. It will feature a vertical urban farm, a five-storey green house which will produce crops and vegetables, a display aquarium, and a ‘biophilic walkway’, a route through the building where “art, education and growing is part of the experience on the entrance to the commercial offices.” 

Seafront masterplan approved by council’s cabinet

Wellness gardens with saunas and hot tubs, a dunes park with a restaurant and bar enjoying spectacular sea views and colourful beach huts are set to take centre stage in masterplans for a Welsh seafront. Along with the expansion of food options and provision of extra parking and changing facilities, these are just some of the suggestions contained in an Aberafan Seafront Masterplan which was approved by members of Neath Port Talbot Council. Century-old Swansea building set to be transformed into new flats and shops

The Mond building, a historic Grade II-listed building at the heart of Swansea city centre is set to be transformed after years of being forgotten. St Mary’s Square Developments is working on creating plans for the building which dates back to 1911 and stands at the corner of Union Street and Park Street. It is anticipated that the ground floor will be retained as commercial space with the uses of the other floors potentially including commercial and accommodation. Read more

Major heritage project will breathe new life into former copperworks

The project would result in the Vivian engine house at the old Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site having a new mezzanine and first floor and being occupied by tenants. The adjacent Musgrave engine house would house an exhibition area displaying the original engine – and a new link building would connect the two listed structures. Read more

Since the Middle Ages, women have pioneered beer and cider production. Despite this legacy, nowadays, only 9% of craft brewers are women. Mexican restaurant merges with board game café

Piñatas Burrito Bar has been in Swansea city centre for five years. In November 2023, Kieran Ivett, who runs the restaurant, also took over the running of Social Dice, a board game café at 43 Wind Street, together with his partner Harriet Risby. And now, the pair have decided to combine both businesses together inside Social Dice. Customers will be able to eat, with the choice of 450 board games and Nintendo switches. Read more

Tiny shop making world class sandwiches loved by TV and Michelin chefs makes major announcement

A sandwich shop which has developed a big reputation for making some of the best sandos in Wales has announced it is to open a second venue. Grandad Needs His Medicine currently has a thriving base in Oxford Street in Swansea city centre, selling popular items like its signature beef brisket and mind-bending creations like the Joe’s Ice Cream sandwich. Now its owner of the shop, Chris Hardie, has announced plans to open at a second city location in Sketty. 

Brand new Artisan Café opens at “vacant and derelict” former pub in Neath village

Previously known as the Old Railway Tavern, the building in Tonna had been empty for the last few years after suffering flood damage before being acquired by the Booth family who restored the building to its former glory. Now it has been transformed into a family run Artisan Café, with two self-contained holiday apartments on the first floor. The new dog friendly café now called Booths by the Bridge is located alongside Neath Canal. Read more

New Narberth micropub offers front room welcome and a piano

A couple were struggling to find a local pub with an old-fashioned, no-tv feel where they could meet friends for a quiet chat and a drink. So they opened their own! When a former restaurant in Narberth became vacant, Donna and Mike Headlam jumped in to take it over. They named it The Star, brought in real ale from the cask, big retro tables, board games, a piano and guitar and served it all up with a friendly welcome and a tempting selection of things to eat. Walk down the road and you could probably be forgiven for not knowing it is there. Strolling past The Sketty Club in Swansea’s Eversley Road, from the outside it just looks like an entrance for any other social club of its kind. A mother has revealed how she has ‘built a community’ since opening a new wellness and recovery centre in Pembrokeshire. Yasmin Woods introduced Heat – a sauna and ice plunge lounge to Pembroke on January 6, 2025. The facility is located on 134 Main Street which offers contrast therapy and chromotherapy to aid muscle recovery, improve sleep quality, reduce aging and boost immune system while providing a place for locals to socialise. 140 hectares of Welsh land purchased to restore woodland and nature habitat

This initiative at Cefn Morfudd, near Neath, which began with the acquisition of 95 hectares at Brynau Farm in 2019, is poised to transform the area into a flourishing green haven, offering new spaces for nature and public enjoyment. Through this project, Coed Cadw aims to reconnect local communities with nature and mitigate environmental challenges in the region; the landscape is within easy reach of over half a million people in South Wales. Huge container-style batteries to be installed in fields in Swansea

Rows of shipping container-style batteries will be installed on fields north of Swansea to help balance the electricity grid. The 80 battery energy storage units will store excess electricity produced by intermittent renewable sources of power like solar farms and release it at times of high demand. They’ll be 6m long, 2.5m wide and 2.9m high. The facility will be built on a 6.75-hectare site off Bryntywod, Llangyfelach, between the M4 and a rail line. Read more

World is your Oyster for native Pembrokeshire Oysters

The Rudder’s Boatyard pontoon in Milford haven is the site for a native oyster hotel – which aims to reverse the decline in native oyster population. Native British oyster populations have declined dramatically over the decades, as a result of habitat loss, pollution, over-harvesting and disease. The project aims to restore native oyster broodstock and, eventually, oyster beds within Milford Haven waterway. AI-powered self-healing asphalt: A step toward sustainable net-zero roads

Self-healing asphalt roads, made from biomass waste and designed with the help of AI, could offer a promising solution to the UK’s pothole problem, which is estimated to cost £143.5 million a year. A team of scientists from Swansea University and King’s College London, in collaboration with scientists in Chile, is designing a new type of self-healing asphalt that can mend its own cracks without the need for maintenance or human intervention. New ‘time machine’ app allows visitors to experience Margam Castle like never before

Swansea University has played a key role in the launch of a groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) app that brings the rich history of Margam Castle to life. The M[AR]gam app allows visitors to step back into the castle’s Victorian grandeur, acting as a virtual “time machine” – fitting for a former filming location of Doctor Who. Visitors can explore two rooms of the castle—the library and dining room— and learn about the lives of the servants and notable guests. Read more

New naming rights deal for Swansea Arena

Swansea Building Society has struck a naming rights deal with the Swansea Arena. As part of a five year sponsorship the 3,500 capacity arena has been renamed the Swansea Building Society Arena. Plans for huge new 120-bed hotel to be built next to the coast in Llanelli

Those behind the proposals say they want to build a “high-quality destination for visitors which would support the local tourism economy in a sustainable location and contribute positively to the economic and cultural growth of Llanelli and the wider region”. The site – which is currently vacant green space – covers part of the land occupied by the former Machynys brickworks in the early part of the 20th Century, which historically formed part of the docks. Huge £96m leisure centre, sports hall and pool in Llanelli to finally open this spring

Zone one of the Pentre Awel complex, called Canolfan meaning centre, will open this spring. It will consist of a new leisure centre, including a sports hall and fitness studios, plus a 25m swimming pool, a learner pool, and a hydrotherapy pool. There’ll also be a cafe, a communal space, and a health and well-being academy with a range of clinical rooms run by Swansea University. A new café inspired by an antipodean adventure has opened and is thriving in a local town centre. The Links at Tenby Golf Club has achieved a place in The Michelin Guide in its first year of operation. Daughter of former pub owner opens bakery in Haverfordwest

The daughter of a legendary pub owner has made a successful start to her bakery business. Rebecca Heritage opened Heritage Bakehouse at the Withybush Trading Estate in Haverfordwest in May. The name of the bakery was inspired by Rebecca’s father, Martin who used to run The Hideaway Cellar Bar. The bakery offers cakes, coffee, milkshakes and savoury options such as sausage rolls, pasties and breakfast wraps, and specials like lasagne and steak-loaded chips. Read More

Farmers have seen up to a 24 per cent yield increase using a Welsh seaweed biostimulant. Câr-y-Môr, Wales’ first regenerative ocean farm, has developed a range of seaweed-derived biostimulants and fertilisers. Plans submitted for £20million Port Talbot research centre

The proposed facility, named the South Wales Industrial Transition from Carbon Hub, or SWITCH, would be located in the Harbourside area of Port Talbot, and form a part of the Swansea Bay City Deal. Trees to be planted on land equivalent to nearly 10 rugby pitches a year

More and more trees will appear on Carmarthenshire Council land after its cabinet approved a new woodland strategy. The plan is to plant an average of nine-and-a-half hectares of woodland per year over the next 25 years to increase the proportion of tree cover on council-owned and managed land from 12% to 17%. A ground-breaking project to turn cow muck into the carbon capture fertiliser of the future could give Welsh farmers a much-needed new source of income. Biochar, a super charcoal, can be made by heating any biomass – usually plant-based – without oxygen but experts from Lafan and Coleg Sir Gȃr, supported by Castell Howell Foods, have developed a process to create it from cattle slurry.  Huge multimillion plans to transform popular waterfall attraction given go-ahead

The plans will see the development of a visitor infrastructure scheme at Waterfall Country in Pontneddfechan and will include a new car park, retail shop, welfare facilities, and tourist accommodation once completed.
