Station Planters Bring Colour and Biodiversity to Swansea Railway Station

Renowned Swansea artist Owen Griffiths has transformed the forecourt of Swansea Railway Station into a mini urban garden with a colourful set of planters and natural oak benches. The project was initiated by South West Wales Connected Community Rail Partnership (SWWCo), which is based at the station. 4theRegion hosts SWWCo and is also based at Swansea Railway Station. New project offers training and education in traditional building crafts

A programme of traditional skills training is underway in Carmarthenshire as part of the cross-border Ancient Connections project. Crafts such as lime plastering, traditional carpentry, thatching, and stonemasonry will be the focus. Workshops are open to anyone with an interest in built heritage, old and listed buildings and participants will be supported by workshops and seminars on topics such as essential repair and maintenance and improving energy efficiency. Landmark Moment for Swansea Regeneration Scheme

A prominent clock tower has been reinstated at the historic powerhouse building at the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks in Swansea. In the coming months, the restored building and neighbouring structures will be an additional new home for Welsh drinks specialist Penderyn. The site is being revamped by Swansea business John Weaver Contractors on behalf of Swansea Council. Read More

Pembrokeshire residents name landmark buildings at Pembroke Port

Members of the Pembrokeshire community have been successful in naming four new buildings that are being created to service the growing renewables industry in Pembrokeshire. The annexes attached to the historic Sunderland Hangars at Pembroke Port are being redeveloped into modern office and workshop spaces with work expected to be completed by Spring 2023. Read More

A mini entrepreneur has won the hearts of Gorseinon after cashing in on the recent good weather with his own business. Seven-year-old Shawn Nicholas sells 20p cups of squash on his own ‘lemonade’ style stand outside his family home every weekend and even on hot summer days after school. Read More

New art gallery in Pembroke Dock with ‘Parisian’ charm

A new contemporary art gallery is adding a bit more culture to Pembroke Dock after opening its doors to the public. The debut exhibition is titled ‘Dockside’ which features textures and ambiance cast by molten metal and shadow form. There is also aluminium sculpture by Dawny Tootes and photography by Pembroke Dock’s own Alan Rowlands. Read More

How new bacterial species discovered in Asian soil could help battle against antibiotic resistance

Swansea University experts have helped identify several news species of bacteria growing in arid Asian soil which could play a key role in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Scientists are now trying to find a way of encouraging these bacteria to produce new antibiotics, the products of so-called silent or cryptic biosynthetic pathways, that could supplement the diminishing supply of effective antimicrobials currently used in medicine. The restaurant offering a ‘no questions asked’ hot meal to children of parents who find themselves struggling over the summer holidays

The Bloom Inn, based in New Road in Skewen, has recognised the “financial stress” on those who rely on school meals, and will be providing a hot meal to take away or eat in, no questions asked. They’ll be able to have meals ranging from a chicken melt, a chicken curry, vegetarian and pasta dishes. Owner of The Bloom Inn, Adam Hockin said “We cover all bases and look after everyone’s needs.” Read More

Carmarthen chef launching community kitchen and canteen at town church

Deri Reed, who owns The Warren restaurant in Mansel Street, has started the ball rolling on the new completely separate venture in the town, at the former Cellar Cafe within the Lammas Street Centre at the English Baptist Church. Deri said: “There will be a suggested price for food but people can pay what they are able to and also there will be free food for people who really need it. We also want to have community fridges and freezers there for people.” Read More

Carmarthenshire celebrates Sustainable Food Place success

Carmarthenshire has become the newest member of the UK’s pioneering Sustainable Food Places network which aims to improve people’s lives and reduce our impact on the planet through food. Bwyd Sir Gâr Food is a vibrant cross-sector food partnership bringing together members of the Public Services Board, Carmarthenshire Food Network, grassroots community organisations, businesses, and residents to work towards a healthy and sustainable food system. NEXT X Data Reveals Top 10 UK Greenest Cities to Invest in

According to expert-led independent research, Swansea scored excellently in areas including the number of environmentally friendly office buildings. Factors including CO2 emissions and roadside air pollutants were also considered by international banking group BNP Paribas as part of a real estate study called Next X that focussed on environmental data. Swansea is the only Welsh city to feature in the study’s top ten environmental scores. Read More

Swansea gets a new pop-up park in the city centre

A new “pop-up park” has come to Swansea city centre. The temporary green park aims to help boost people’s health and wellbeing and improve the area’s biodiversity, as well as show the potential for future “urban planting” options in Swansea. There will be more than 40 wooden planters of different themes, including “wild meadows,” “cliffs and dunes” and “natural hedgerows” for people to enjoy. Read More

Development Bank of Wales announces £33 million for greener housing

Residential developers who meet green standards can now access a new Green Homes Incentive that will help deliver more thermally efficient and lower carbon homes in Wales. Finding innovative ways to improve the energy efficiency of new homes will also bring down costs for homeowners which is crucial during a cost of living crisis. Read More

RWE and Tata Steel partnership could see offshore wind power made with Port Talbot steel

Wales’ largest renewable energy operator and the UK’s largest steelmaker will work together to explore the production of steel components for foundations and structures used in the commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm off the Welsh coast. The components would be supplied by Tata Steel’s steelworks in Port Talbot in a move the two companies said would support the UK’s transition to renewable energy by 2035 and grow the Welsh economy.  Read More

Swansea families invited to attend eco-friendly activities during school summer holidays

Wand making, woodland wellbeing sessions and outdoor art classes are just some of the environmentally friendly activities on offer thanks to housing association Pobl. More than 16 free activity days are taking place for children and parents until September 1, as part of Pobl’s Penderi Green Regeneration Project. The events, which are being arranged by the project’s partner the Environment Centre, aim to encourage families to get outdoors and get creative.  Read More

How Steel in our Buildings can Generate Clean Energy – New Swansea University and Tata Steel Collaboration

Solar roofing panels which are greener, lighter, cheaper and flexible, and which can be printed on steel, would enable buildings to generate, store and release their own secure supply of electricity. Two “Active Buildings” have operated successfully on Swansea University Bay Campus for several years. The aim of the new research is to explore the potential of this technology further and speed up the process of turning it into products for industry to manufacture. Read More

Pilot project for pollinators underway across Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire County Council received funding under Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature programme as part of a pilot project to trial new ways of managing our green spaces. The project does not include planting or seeding wildflowers, but instead involves a change of management to encourage the native seed bank of flowering plants to flourish without introducing non-native species. Gavin Griffiths Group opens the biggest Matec full front to back wash plant in the world

The Gavin Griffiths Group has opened a brand-new wash plant at their Cwmgwili inert and aggregate recycling facility. The new plant is one of the biggest full wash plants in the UK and the biggest recycling wash plant in Wales. It will create new jobs and support the circular economy in the region. The recycled aggregates offer lower carbon footprints, reduce waste going to landfill and support companies who are aiming to be more environmentally friendly. Read More

Wales at the forefront of new generation of wind farms

“Wherever the sites are developed in the Celtic Sea, then it’s the ports in Port Talbot and Milford Haven that are best placed to serve this market,” said Nicola Clay, head of new ventures marine for the Crown Estate. While the Crown Estate said it was too early to give job creation figures, some predict up to 10,000 could be created from floating wind farm development in the Celtic Sea, with assembly work at Welsh ports and supply chain activities. EDF Renewables UK Reveals Plans For Renewable Energy Park in Neath Port Talbot

Hirfynydd Renewable Energy Park could have an installed capacity of 100 MW, enough green electricity for over 40,000 households. EDF is looking to develop a mix of technologies, including a wind farm of up to seven turbines, a solar farm and battery storage. Having a breadth of technologies increases the amount of energy that can be generated in different weather conditions, with battery storage allowing surplus energy to provide grid balancing services. Pembrokeshire Based Bombora Assembly of World’s Most Powerful Wave Energy Converter

Bombora Wave Power is entering the final test and assembly phase of the 1.5MW Pembrokeshire Demonstration Project. Rigorous testing of the key sub-systems is currently underway as Bombora prepares to deliver the project. The cell modules, a key element of the membrane-based WEC system, mWave, are now being operated through their final round of design limit testing, before being fitted into the foundation structure in Pembroke Dock. The people of Swansea are about to take a journey of discovery through a public art trail exploring their shared history – and how we can all help make racial justice a reality. From August 13-October 31, The World Reimagined project will transform city centre streets with its free trail of globe sculptures. Baby alpacas have arrived in Margam Country Park

Two cria (infant alpacas) have become the first of their kind to enter the historic grounds of Margam Country Park – with a third cria set to join them very soon – and visitors to the Park will now be able to see them. Alpacas are quiet and calming animals, with a gentle nature and kind personality. They have a strong herding instinct, so it’s essential they live with at least two other alpacas. Read More

The artwork painted by acclaimed Welsh street artist Steve ‘Jenks’ Jenkins is situated on a previously blank wall at Cefneithin Welfare Hall. The village is in the Carmarthenshire coalfield area and the mural pays tribute to the community’s mining heritage. Read More
