Employer apprenticeship drop in event

Gower College Swansea will be hosting a dedicated employer drop in event on 28 August, 10am – 4pm. The event has been specifically designed to provide employers with the opportunity to engage directly with experts, and receive guidance on hiring apprentices, available funding, how apprenticeships can work for your business and more. Saddle Up for a Change as City’s Popular Bike Hire Scheme Gets Revamp

After six successful years, Swansea’s much-loved bike hire scheme is getting a new name and a major upgrade. Swansea University Cycles will launch on August 12. The fleet of bikes, which have been a hit with students, the community and tourists, will be an upgrade on the previous model, with new and improved locking systems and GPS tracking, and the docking stations will have a new locking system to make the hire and return process even easier. Read More

Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum are delighted to introduce Lottie, their new Project Assistant. Lottie brings a wealth of experience and a passion for sustainability. She will be supporting the Marine Energy Engagement Plan (MEEP) project, working to engage and educate local communities about marine renewable energy. UKSE invests in ground-breaking VR plant business

Plant construction innovator Nathan John is hoping his virtual reality, remote-controlled mini excavator will put his business on even firmer foundations. Powerfab, based in Cardiff and Swansea, has been supported by a £50,000 investment from Tata Steel subsidiary UKSE to help him develop and market his new generation of environmentally-friendly mini-excavators. Port of Milford Haven Community Fund

The Port of Milford Haven Community Fund, following relaunch under the new 2024 partnership agreement with Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS), offers grants of up to £5,000 to projects meeting the Port’s themes of ‘a sustainable and resilient environment’; ‘a safe, inclusive and enjoyable waterway’; and ‘a vibrant and prosperous community’. Fully Funded Clean Growth Innovation Programmes for Businesses in South Wales

The Clean Growth Innovation Programme, fully funded by Swansea University supports Welsh businesses in advancing circular economy knowledge and clean growth innovation. Participants will network with like-minded professionals and develop plans eligible for Welsh Government funding. After being left empty for over 15 years, the Grade II-listed Palace Theatre in Swansea will open as a coffee shop, events space and offices in September. Many original features have been restored, including the arch around the stage, the balustrades and red bricks. By night the main area will be used as an event space, so the stage is going to be utilised as what it was originally built for. Read More

Pictures revealed of major new building planned for Swansea city centre

Pictures have been released showing plans for a major new building in the heart of Swansea. If approved, the exciting new development will be home to a public sector hub in the area of the former St David’s Shopping Centre. The hub will also enable the redevelopment of the Civic Centre, according to Swansea Council, which intends to make the office space the working home for hundreds of its staff, as well as workers from other public sector organisations. Read More

Grant funding supports Swansea affordable homes

Coastal Housing Group is developing the scheme in Sketty which will include 13 new affordable homes for social rent. Properties will be two-person one-bedroom flats. Also being built is a new dedicated car park for residents and will include dedicated disability spaces for the first time. Coastal are also exploring whether secure bike storage and EV charging facilities can also be offered as part of their commitment to environmental sustainability. Read More

Ambitious ‘Hwb’ plans for former Carmarthen Debenhams site

The state of the art Hwb will deliver on a wide range of health, wellbeing, educational, leisure and customer services all under one roof. Carmarthenshire residents can access community health services at the Health and Wellbeing Hwb provided by Hywel Dda. UWTSD is exploring opportunities to develop its offer to the community in relation to Health and Wellbeing. The work is being undertaken by lead contractor Bouygues UK. Read More

New 150-bedroom hotel set for Swansea after preferred developer and operator chosen

The hotel would be constructed on land which had been temporarily landscaped between Swansea Arena and the LC. Swansea Council has now picked a preferred developer and operator who it will soon hold detailed discussions with. Once these discussion are complete, the council will also look to announce the brand of the hotel. The hotel would have a rooftop bar offering views over Swansea Bay. It would cater for about 40,000 people a year. Read More

Historic Swansea cinema set to become glass-fronted restaurant and flats

A former cinema damaged by fire and then Second World War bombing is set to be converted into flats and a restaurant. The listed Castle Cinema building, which is around 110 years old, ceased showing films in the 1980s. Now, planning consent has been secured for 30 one, two and three-bedroom flats, built by Easy Living for social housing provider Coastal Housing, a restaurant in a two-storey glass side extension and office space at the rear. A new bar and restaurant is opening at the top of a massive skyscraper with awesome sea views

The future of a restaurant with some of the most stunning panoramic views on offer anywhere in Wales has been revealed. The Grape and Olive, located on the top floor of Wales’ tallest residential building, the Meridian Tower in Swansea, looks set to welcome customers back in August. Located on the 29th floor of the 300ft tower, the restaurant, which offers unparalleled views of Swansea Bay, will now be known as Altitude 28 Sky Bar and Restaurant. Read More

Café is latest attraction at Swansea city centre gallery

Swansea city centre has a new place to enjoy coffee – and to take in some great art. The new café is based at the council-run Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. It’s being run by the people behind the successful HQ Urban Kitchen. HQ Urban Kitchen, in Swansea city’s centre’s former main police station, is driven by Swansea-based Urban Foundry which promotes an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy. Read More

MasterChef star latest big name revealed for new food hall set to transform city centre’s culinary scene

Larkin Cen, a celebrated chef who made the final of MasterChef in 2013, and also featured on the Great British Menu, will introduce street food concept XO. Larkin Cen has a passion for blending traditional Chinese flavours with a western edge. Now, through XO, he will showcase a variety of dishes in Swansea’s much anticipated Albert Hall including Katsu dishes, small plates, noodles, and his latest creation – the Bao Burger. Read More

The boarded-up old electrical store in Swansea that’s now something completely different

A boarded-up old electrical store has been completely transformed into a brand new cafe which is already catching the eye – thanks to the huge duck mural which has been painted on the side of it. Max Freitas has transformed the old unit in Marlborough Road in Brynmill into Duck & Dough. He made pastel de natas to be sold at cafes around the city through his business Natas by Max. And whilst he will continue to do so, he decided to open a cafe of his very own. Read More

Skin Disease Drug Shows Promise for Treating Childhood Diabetes

A drug that is currently used for the treatment of psoriasis has been found to be effective in treating the early stages of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents according to a new clinical trial led by Cardiff University with the assistance of Swansea Trials Unit (STU) and the Diabetes Research Group Laboratory at Swansea University. Read Marine Energy Wales’ 2024 State of the Sector Report

Wales’ marine energy sector delivers £29.9 million to the Welsh economy in 2023/24, with Anglesey and Pembrokeshire leading the way. Total cumulative spending and investment from the sector in Wales has now reached a huge £292.9 million, according to Marine Energy Wales’ latest State of the Sector Report. Lost area of Welsh rainforest to be returned to ancient glory

A lost piece of Celtic rainforest in South West Wales is to be restored to its ancient glory, weaving around standing stones and an abandoned, tumbling-down farmhouse with a waterwheel. The 59-hectare (146-acre) site in Pembrokeshire will be planted with species such as oak, small-leaf lime and wild service (Sorbus torminalis) and should support an abundance of mosses, liverworts, lichens and ferns as well as providing a home for animals and other plant life. RWE and Dragon join forces for Milford Haven CO2 Project

RWE, the largest power generator in Wales, and Dragon, an industry leader in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), are proud to announce the Milford Haven CO2 Project. This pioneering initiative will integrate carbon capture, liquefaction, temporary storage, and ship loading of captured CO2 to enable its transportation from the Dragon site via non-pipeline transport (NPT). A day in the life of a SPARC Industry Facilitator: how Pembrokeshire is opening our eyes to the opportunities and barriers for women in STEM

Despite making up half of the population, women are significantly underrepresented in STEM fields. In the UK, just 24% of the STEM workforce, and 12% of the engineering workforce are women. In Pembrokeshire, the SPARC Alliance is trying to change that, focusing on boosting female representation in the sustainable power, renewables and construction industries, and encouraging more secondary school pupils to pursue STEM subjects in school. Solar farm planned for landfill site

Cwm Environmental, which owns the Nantycaws site near Carmarthen, wants to build the two-megawatt solar farm to help reduce its carbon emissions. The company was previously utilising the landfill gas generated from the historic landfill site but it will run out shortly. It has therefore become necessary to seek an alternative source of renewable energy to continue Cwm Environmental’s decarbonising strategy. Read More

How Afan Ales is making Port Talbot a go-to destination for live music, poetry and comedy

A small independent off license is putting Port Talbot on the map with its live comedy, poetry and music nights. Back in 2021 Gavin John and his partner Bethan Davies set up Afan Ales, an independent off license located just 100 yards from Port Talbot railway station. Work to start on major £12m improvement programme at historic country park

Work is about to start on an ambitious £12m project to modernise visitor facilities and restore historic features at a much loved country park. The work at Neath Port Talbot Council’s Gnoll Estate Country Park, which will take approximately a year to complete, is designed to enhance facilities within the park for regular visitors, bring out the historic significance of the park and attract visitors from further afield. Beach that draws visitors from across the world named the best in Wales

A tough job, no doubt, chief travel writer at The Times and Sunday Times Chris Haslam rated Freshwater West as the country’s best from a top 10 of coastal spots around Wales. Describing the beach, which is a wide sand and rock beach backed by cliffs and sand dunes as a “wilderness”, Chris said: “Freshwater West is a wilderness of dunes, sand and rocks that draws surfers from across the world to ride its winter waves.” Read More

University celebrates double success in aerospace competition

Swansea University students claimed the honours at a unique challenge designed to celebrate the talents of aerospace engineers of the future. This year’s IT FLIES competition was hosted for a fourth year by Swansea University and the two home teams ended up as joint winners. IT FLIES is a student aircraft design and handling competition run each year in the US and the UK and organised by Merlin Flight Simulation Group. Read More

Twelve Students from NPTC Group of Colleges Among WorldSkills UK National Finalists

Twelve students from NPTC Group of Colleges have been announced among 106 Welsh finalists for the WorldSkills UK National Finals which will be held between the 19th and 22nd of November across Greater Manchester. This year, the finalists will compete in over 40 skills, including disciplines such as 3D Digital Game Art, Additive Manufacturing, Welding, and Landscaping. Read More

Swansea University Climbs to Fifth in Stonewall Workplace Equality Index

Swansea University has been named one of the UK’s top 100 most inclusive employers for LGBTQ+ staff for the eighth time in a row. The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index measures the efforts made by workplaces to tackle discrimination and create an inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBTQ+) employees. This year, Swansea University has achieved its highest-ever position in the Index, rising from 12th to fifth place. Read More

Restored Tunic Now Back on Show at Egypt Centre

A rare tunic is now back on display at Swansea University’s Egypt Centre after two years of extensive restoration work. The tunic was bought at auction by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1906 when it was described as being made of embroidered Coptic linen. But experts now say its panelled construction does not match any Coptic garments, and there are more similarities in construction with Mamluk period tunics which date from between 1250 and 1517 CE. First cohort of MSc Digital Transformation for Health and Care Professions graduates celebrate success

Congratulations to the first cohort of NHS Wales and Social Care professionals to graduate from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s MSc Digital Transformation for the Health and Care Professions. The programme is the first course in the UK to be accredited against international criteria in medical informatics education. The course is suited to those who have an interest in expanding and working within the digital landscape of health and care delivery. Read More

QS European University Rankings Places Swansea University in Top 100

Swansea University has been ranked among the top 100 universities in Europe, according to the second edition of the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2025. Swansea University has achieved an overall ranking of 97th out of 685 institutions in Europe, up six places since 2024.  Read More
