Inside Swansea’s Singleton Park landmark Swiss Cottage and the exciting new plans for its future
It’s arguably the most admired landmark of any park in Swansea. The beautiful Swiss Cottage, built in the 1800s in the middle of Singleton Park, is often a talking point for those who pass by on daily strolls, dog walks or runs. New figures show Swansea Arena first year success
Developed by Swansea Council as part of the city’s Copr Bay district, the arena is run by Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG). Over 241,000 people enjoyed ticketed events, conferences, exhibitions, banquets, graduations and creative learning events at the venue up to March 2023. More than 200 contracts awarded to Welsh firms as part of £1.25bn city deal
The deal is a 15-year investment in nine projects in the Region, which are expected to create over 9,600 jobs – mainly in low-carbon energy, advanced manufacturing, life sciences and wellbeing. Around half the £1.25bn is to come from the private sector, with the remainder from the Welsh and UK Governments, participating councils, health boards and universities. Read More

Coaltown Coffee is opening an espresso bar in part of a building which has been described by local residents as a “white elephant” after a pub was knocked down and a supermarket due to take its place never opened. The roastery behind the new espresso bar was originally founded to bring employment to post-industrial towns and Pontarddulais. Read More
The father-daughter run market stall selling filled bread bowls in the shape of bowler hats
When Clayton Worth happened upon a second-hand bread maker in a charity shop, never did he think it would fuel the start of what is now a budding bread business in Swansea’s Indoor Market called Bowla – whose product is a world first. After a slight miscalculation in his dough his bread ended up being the shape of a top hat. This mishap became the first ever Bowla roll – and started something that would eventually feed the people of Swansea en masse. Read More

Record Growth for Carmarthenshire Food Company
Castell Howell Foods, which employs 750 people, has reported results featuring a rise in profits, as trade recovered fully following the effects of the pandemic. Pre-tax profit for the group increased from £8.6m to £13.7m despite the impact of food inflation, supply chain disruption and increasing energy and wage costs. Turnover rose 50 per cent to £166m from £111.5 in 2021. Its highest previous sales level was £143.1m in 2019. Read More

Welsh holiday resort paves the way by turning nappies into paths in world first
Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire has become the first company in the world to utilise nappy recycling technology in the construction of infrastructure for its new Platinum Lodges, using 60,000 disposable nappies. With an accumulation of up to half a million nappies each year, the resort decided to explore ways to recover the usable fibres from nappies and put them back into the resort as part of its commitment to a circular economy. Statkraft Granted Planning Permission for Pioneering Swansea Electricity Grid Scheme
Even when there is enough renewable energy to meet the demands of homes and businesses in Wales, National Grid ESO sometimes need to pause wind and solar farms, and turn fossil fuel power stations back on, just to provide stability to the electricity network. They have identified Swansea as an area which requires grid stabilisation. This new Greener Grid Park will provide that in a clean, green way, helping to make fossil fuels a thing of the past. Marine energy sector in Wales reports ‘record-breaking’ year as investment tops £100m
The marine energy sector in Wales saw a ‘record-breaking’ £103.4m in investment and spending during the 22/23 financial year. The figure, published in the latest annual state of the sector report for Marine Energy Wales, was four times larger than any previous year and attributed to the recent surge in infrastructure projects around marine energy in Wales. Four areas chosen for floating offshore wind farm in the Celtic Sea
The Crown Estate has revealed four areas outlined for development of 4GW floating offshore wind farms in the Celtic Sea. The programme is intended to provide enough renewable energy by 2035 to power four million homes, with the Celtic Sea having the potential for an additional 20GW by 2045. Up to 10,000 jobs could be created from floating wind farm development in the Celtic Sea, with assembly work at Welsh ports and supply chain activities. Read More

Blue Gem Wind has announced the successful completion of offshore geotechnical and metocean surveys for the highly anticipated 100MW Erebus Test & Demonstration Project. Over £3m funding for Port of Milford Haven and Car Y Mor, St Davids
The Port of Milford Haven has been awarded £2.6m to deliver a suite of interlinked, major regeneration works at Milford Fish Docks. This will boost capability to sustainably land, process and add value to produce for local, regional and international markets. Car y Mor has received £1.1m to expand seaweed production facilities by developing a seaweed processing unit with storage, equipment, shop and an educational hub. Read More
Welsh fire service to use wastewater to tackle fires
In a first for Wales, in partnership with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is trialling the use of UV tertiary treated effluent water at fire incidents as an alternative to drinking water. While water is an essential element of the response work by fire and rescue crews, the large amount of water required can occasionally cause issues for communities, such as low water pressure and dirty water. The Pembrokeshire hotel with bedrooms designed to make you feel like you’re in Asia
Originally called The Woodridge Hotel, the hotel has re-branded as The Imperial Dragon Hotel and is run by partners Jenny Camilo and Lok Cheung. Jenny is from the Philippines and Lok is from China and they wanted guests at their hotel to experience visiting Asia. Three rooms have undergone transformations to represent different countries in Asia including, China, Thailand and Japan. A room based on the Philippines is next on the list. Read More

How to safely see baby seals on the Welsh coast in August and what you must not do
We are so blessed to have some incredible wildlife. And one of the most enthralling to see are wild seals, especially after they have just had their pups. Pembrokeshire is home to two types of seal – the Atlantic grey and the Common or Harbour. There are a couple of times a year you are more likely to see them on beaches. They come to moult in the winter and early spring and come to pup in the autumn. From mid August till November you can spot them. Read More

Universities Win £15m for New Railway Research Innovation Centre at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence in South Wales
The investment will enable the University of Birmingham, working with Swansea and Cardiff Universities, to establish a new Centre of Excellence for Railway Testing, Validation and Customer Experience at the Global Centre of Rail Excellence, currently under construction. This will provide purpose-built facilities alongside major railway industrial expertise to support railway innovation, research and development, in collaboration with leading industry partners.
