UWTSD wishes to appoint a contractor to provide a solar panel solution at the IQ Building in Swansea, and at Yr Egin Building in Carmarthen. As part of the solution it will be the responsibility of the contractor to determine the number and size of the PV modules and electrical configuration for each individual campus, since this will depend on roof geometry and other building services factors and the requirements of the District Network Operator (DNO). Contract for the Milford Way Development Partnership

Swansea Council, as part of its More Homes Strategy, is seeking a development partner to develop two Housing Department owned sites (Milford A and Milford B) for residential use in the Penderry ward in Swansea, as part of the Penderry Regeneration Framework. The Council will retain freehold ownership of a minimum of 40% of the homes on these sites as affordable housing. Read More

The £100m plan to transform Swansea’s High Street area

Swansea Council said the investment aimed to make the street better for businesses, people living there and visitors to the city. It said the work would build on other big projects that have already been done on High Street in recent years. These include the first part of Coastal Housing’s Urban Village development and upgrades around Swansea Railway Station. Read More

Plans revealed to build new hotel in Swansea city centre

Some of the world’s leading hotel developers and operators are being encouraged to invest in Swansea. The council is marketing an opportunity for a hotel operator to build and run a new hotel on land between Swansea Arena and the LC. It follows an expert study that identified the need for three new hotels in the city. If the plan goes ahead, the hotel would include a minimum of 120 bedrooms. Read More

The huge new building already forever changing Swansea’s skyline

The vision of Hacer Developments to create a 12-storey ‘living building’ joined onto the former Woolworths store in Oxford Street is coming to fruition. It will provide an educational facility, residential apartments, shops, offices, and a courtyard and will be green-minded with a bio-diverse look featuring living – or biophilic – walls and roofs along with rooftop solar panels, battery storage, and gardens. Andrew Scott completes employment site

Andrew Scott Ltd has successfully completed the construction of the Cross Hands East SES, a low carbon project for Carmarthenshire County Council, Welsh Government and supported by the Active Building Centre. The project consists of three buildings containing a 38,000sqft mix of offices, together with small and light industrial units. Read More

Historic building to be turned into affordable housing

A historic building dating back to the 1800s is set to be turned it into apartments. The Ty Mawr building in Pontardawe is believed to be the only remaining structure from the former tinplate works in the village. The building on Ynysderw Road, will be refurbished for use as affordable housing as part of the development led by local housing association Pobl, alongside TAD Builders Ltd. Read More

First look at historic Swansea building as covers come off for first time in two years

The wraps are starting to come off an historic Swansea building that’s being saved for future generations. The 138-year-old Palace Theatre building has been wrapped in protective covers for more than two years as the council continues to sensitively restore the structure. A restored entrance door is now visible along with glimpses of expertly refreshed stonework through the tall scaffolding that’ll come down in the coming weeks. Read More

SWANSEA BAY CITY DEAL

New video shows city development nearing completion

The 71/72 Kingsway development is being part-funded by the £1.3bn Swansea Bay City Deal, with Bouygues UK leading on its construction. It will also benefit from cutting-edge digital connectivity. Once construction is finished, it will offer a flexible, state-of the-art work environment for businesses that provides space for 600 jobs in sectors like tech and digital. When up and running, it will be worth £32.6m a year to Swansea’s economy. Read More

Broadband help at hand in Swansea

Swansea communities and businesses looking to access better broadband can access support. A broadband engagement officer, funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal, is now in place at Swansea Council to give information on available options including broadband voucher schemes. The work forms part of the City Deal’s £175m digital infrastructure programme which aims to help achieve better broadband for everyone throughout South West Wales. Read More

Abandoned skyscraper restaurant with unrivalled views set to be brought back to life

The Grape and Olive, located on the top floor of Wales’s tallest residential building, the Meridian Tower in Swansea, is set to welcome back customers in May. Phil Lake, from Meridian Quay Ltd, explained “Brains surrendered the lease…and the restaurant is now available to anyone who is interested in taking over. It’s been empty for a year, which is crazy, because there is no view like it anywhere – probably in the UK. People love it and Swansea needs it.” Read More

New 150-cover bar and restaurant opens

On The Rocks is a 150-cover bar and restaurant with a 20-metre long dining terrace overlooking Swansea Bay. The £1m investment has been part-funded by a £470,000 loan from the Development Bank and a grant of £116,000 from Visit Wales. On the Rocks, located in the former rowing club, employs ten full-time and up to 40 part-time staff. It is the latest project by brothers Fred and Bert Bollom, who also own Mumbles Pier amusement arcade and Copperfish Bar. Read More

‘Once in a lifetime opportunity’ as historic pub goes up for sale after five decades in same family

The Dolphin Inn in Llanrhidian has been in the same family for 53 years, but has now gone up for sale for £500,000. It has full approved planning to create four en-suite bed and breakfast rooms, two camping pods to the rear, a coffee shop with a takeaway service, whilst retaining the much-loved bar area. Estate agent Dawsons, who are marketing the pub, said “This 18th century pub is one of the oldest public houses situated in Gower and has endless stories to tell.” Read More

First look inside the the 100% plant-based cafe which has opened in Swansea

Take a look inside a new restaurant in Swansea which has opened up with a menu which is 100% plant based. Harriet Eveleigh and Gavin Everett have taken over the running of No 18 Vegan Cafe Bar along Brynymor Road in Brynmill. Harriet Eveleigh said: “The response has been brilliant so far and people have really been enjoying our coffee and food, especially our Reuben sandwiches and breakfasts. We want to use as many local suppliers as possible.” Read More

Swansea University’s Oriel Science Celebrates Innovative Joint Social Prescribing Project

Oriel Science, Swansea University’s pioneering public exhibition centre, has been helping brain injury patients undergoing rehabilitation to improve their health and wellbeing through its first Social Prescribing project. The ten-week project, a collaboration with Swansea Bay UHB’s Regional Neuropsychology and Community Brain Injury Service, invited patients to several interactive sessions, from stimulating talks and creative activities to hands-on experiments. The city leisure centre that now has a swanky new look and its own sports barn after a huge investment

A Swansea leisure centre has been totally revamped with a £7.5 million investment. Cefn Hengoed Community School and Leisure Centre, operated by Freedom Leisure, has benefitted from a new indoor sports barn with 3G pitch suitable for a variety of sports. It also has a brand new gym with all new equipment, a new fitness studio with big screen, sound system and rainbow lighting, new changing rooms and a new reception area with café. Read More

Charity opens first multibank in Wales that will support 40,000 families in poverty this year

Cwtch Mawr is the third multibank in the UK. Cherrie Bija, chief executive of Faith in Families, said: “When people come together to support each other we all will have a better life. This big Welsh Hug can be transformational for Swansea and South Wales. From gifting children with brand-new football boots so that they can take part in their school team, to maternity packs for new Mums so they can have dignity going into hospital, these things really matter.” Read More

Major boost for plans to create huge floating energy project in Port Talbot

Port Talbot could be transformed over the coming years into a location for the manufacturing and assembly of floating off-shore wind components for projects in the Celtic Sea, which could create as many as 10,000 jobs. It has the opportunity to create a “world-class manufacturing and supply chain hub in Port Talbot”, along with opportunities for wider green energy and industrial activity that could act as a catalyst for economic regeneration in South Wales. Read More

City Centre Business Goes Green With Solar Power

Ninety six solar panels have been installed on the rooftop of Cwtsh Hostel on Castle Street, helping the business cut its carbon footprint and save money on its energy bills. Since the panels went operational at the end of January, they’ve already generated over 1.2MW of green electricity. Cwtsh Hostel has also bought a high-tech battery to store the power generated, meaning they can sell excess energy to the grid and reinvest profits back into the business. Read More

Jet fuel facility plans approved in jobs boost for Port Talbot

Project Dragon will see the creation of a sustainable aviation fuel production facility based in Port Talbot. Once completed, developers say it could produce as much as 100 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel per year, by using an alcohol-to-jet facility to turn sustainably sourced ethanol into aviation fuel. It could also create over 150 full-time jobs in the area, including 85 jobs on the site, along with more business generated further down the supply chain.  Read More

Welsh Government’s £750,000 tidal lagoon challenge winners announced

The marine energy sector in Wales has moved on a step following the announcement of three successful applicants for tidal lagoon research projects. One of the winners, Swansea University project Director Dr David Clarke said “This is great news, the funding will support migration studies looking at movements of acoustically tagged Atlantic salmon, sea trout and twaite shad, enabling us to understand the risks of marine renewables to these species.” Read More

New solar farm to power 2,500 Pembrokeshire homes approved

The nine-megawatt solar farm at West Farm, Cosheston, near Pembroke Dock would contribute about 9,337,000 KWh of renewable electricity to the local area, which will typically produce enough green electricity a year to power about 2,500 homes. The proposed development is for a temporary 40-year timescale and will be fully reinstated at the end of its operational life. There will be no loss of agricultural land. Read More

Swansea renewable energy scheme to power thousands of homes

Proposals have been unveiled to develop a new renewable energy scheme in Swansea which will power up to 11,500 homes in South Wales each year. The plans for Parc Solar Caenewydd (PSC) in Gowerton, Swansea will support the continued operation of Penyfodau Fawr Farm and its popular farm shop.  They will give locals the opportunity to have a stake through a commitment to shared community ownership. Bouygues UK puts biodiversity and carbon reduction at forefront of Pentre Awel Project

Biodiversity at Pentre Awel is expected to increase by 137% thanks to the work of the scheme’s building contractor Bouygues UK, who have put carbon reduction, sustainability and the environment at the heart of everything it is doing. This has also resulted in a 18.4% reduction in carbon savings. Pentre Awel will bring together life science and business innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities on 83-acres of land on the Llanelli coastline. Read More

Swansea University has played a key role in helping Swansea become the first UK city to introduce ‘liquid trees’ to every primary school, educating pupils on climate change and creating a healthier learning environment. Funded and supported by Swansea Building Society as part of its commitment to social value and climate change education, Our Classroom Climate is designed to help students understand the science of climate change. The Welsh location named one of the UK’s cheapest and most popular staycation trips

Swansea has been named one of the UK’s most popular and affordable staycation spot for this spring. The city beat other popular destinations like Poole and Weymouth. With an average of 27,100 Google searches each month and a whopping 622.4 million hashtag views on TikTok, Swansea came out on top. The study, carried out by credit card company Aqua, also found that Swansea had an average hotel price of £110.96 per night. Read More

JOPOFEST 2024: The 2-day festival at a stunning Welsh castle you can now buy tickets for

A beautiful Welsh castle will be the backdrop to a vibrant two-night country music festival, organisers have confirmed. Jopofest’s The Barndance Festival will be taking over stunning Weobley Castle with entertainment by talented local bands, cocktails galore and loads of dancing! Organisers say they’ve noticed country music has had a “surge in popularity” recently and they’re looking forward to putting on a huge country music party at the castle on May 4 and 5. Read More

Brickwork student hailed Welsh champion

NPTC Group of Colleges’ brickwork apprentice has won a prestigious title and could now become the best in Britain. James Luc Martin, A Level 3 Brickwork apprentice from Neath College, became Senior Welsh Champion at The Guild of Bricklayers Welsh Section competition held at Coleg Gwent recently. James is in the third year of his apprenticeship with local business Watts Brickwork but attends college through work-based learning team, Pathways Training. Read More
