Health, leisure and learning facilities all under one roof in the centre of Carmarthen at the town’s former Debenhams store have been given the go ahead. Scientists from Swansea University‘s Institute for Innovative Materials, Processing and Numerical Technologies (IMPACT) and Japan have been awarded £1.3 million to develop a new “point of care testing” kit that can detect biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease. International Team Examines how Selenium Could Help in Fight Against Ovarian Cancer
Selenium is a micronutrient that plays an essential role in human health but is toxic at high levels. However, new research has shown selenium actually has anti-cancer properties when used at high doses. To overcome problems with its toxicity, a research team, led by Professor Steve Conlan in Swansea University and Professor Laurent Charlet at Université Grenoble Alpes, tested whether selenium nanoparticles could be developed as a potential cancer treatment. First Minister announces £750,000 fund for tidal lagoon research
The money will be available for at least three research projects focusing on the deployment of tidal lagoon technology. The research will help address the barriers that have prevented the development of the technology and give more insight into the benefits it could bring to Wales. Consent granted for Wales’ first floating windfarm
The Welsh Government has granted consent for Wales’ first floating windfarm located 40km off the coast of Pembrokeshire. Project Erebus will house seven next-generation 14 megawatt turbines on floating platforms, providing enough low carbon energy to power 93,000 homes. Erebus is part of the first phase of a four gigawatt renewable energy development in the Celtic Sea, enough power for 4m homes. Read More

Experts from Swansea and Grenoble have joined forces to develop a practical way to produce green hydrogen using sustainable catalysts. The researchers hope their work will be a major step towards making green hydrogen production simpler, more affordable and more scalable. Plans for ‘nationally significant’ solar farm in Neath Port Talbot
Proposals have been made for a solar farm with the potential to power more than 7,000 homes. The site, which would be known as Eirlys Solar Farm, is being brought forward by Welsh-based energy developers Octo Partners, and energy giants EDF Renewables UK. The project would see ground mounted solar panels, based on 99.5 hectares of land, as part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to generating 70% of Wales’ electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Initial findings from a supply chain study by RWE and Marine Power Systems are helping identify where Wales can benefit from the forthcoming Celtic Sea floating wind technology boom. The study is funded by RWE, Wales’ largest energy generator, and carried out by Swansea-based company Marine Power Systems, which is developing a floating wind platform solution called PelaFlex for industrial-scale application. Swansea University has established a low-cost and scalable carbon ink formulation capable of unlocking, for the first time, the potential for perovskite solar cells to be manufactured at scale. Using slot die coating in a roll-to-roll (R2R) process, materials engineers from the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre at Swansea University have established a way to create “fully printable” perovskite photovoltaics (PV), a term often used but, until now, incorrect. Hydrogen buses are coming to Swansea and Neath Port Talbot for the first time
Swansea and Neath Port Talbot residents can ride on a hydrogen bus for the first time as part of a trial of the zero emission vehicle. South Wales Transport will use a hydrogen bus on its 256 Neath-Pontardawe route and one other route, likely to be in Swansea, from May 25 – June 8. The City Gold 46 bus, which only emits clean water and filters the air passing through to seating areas, will be provided by Caetano UK in partnership with Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions. Read More
Gruffalo Trail opens
The new Gruffalo Trail at the National Botanic Garden of Wales opened on March 23. It features five larger-than-life sculptures of characters from the ever-popular books: Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and the Gruffalo. The trail will be open every day with the aim of encouraging children to enjoy the great outdoors and have adventures in the woods. The characters were made by Garry Turler, a chainsaw art and wood sculptor from Cwmtwrch, in the Swansea Valley. Read More
Egypt Centre Experts Reveal History of Ancient Artefacts
The award-winning Egypt Centre on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus will be home to a collection of more than 700 Egyptian items on loan from Harrogate Museums for the next three years. The collection includes a Third Intermediate Period (c. 1000-700 BC) coffin, stone stelae, a large collection of pottery, amulets and shabtis as well as a renowned Anubis mask which is the only one of its kind in the world. Abi Harris is said to have been born in 1970 after he and her mum, Jennifer Hill, had a relationship. GWR to run 65 additional services a week
GWR’s May 2023 timetable includes 65 extra trains per week for Llanelli, Pembrey and Burry Port and Carmarthen. These Intercity Express Trains will provide direct connectivity to Carmarthenshire and West Wales from Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol Parkway and London starting from 22 May. May will also see the return of Summer Saturday trains to Pembroke Dock, connecting Tenby and South Pembrokeshire directly to London again for the first time since 2019. Find out more

The Pump That Makes Polluted Water Safe to Drink – Swansea Student Inventors’ Idea Reaches Final off Worldwide Competition
The competition, “Invent for the Planet”, takes place from 18-20 April. Run by Texas A&M University, it was open to 21 universities in 15 countries. Swansea was the only UK university invited to participate. The Swansea team’s idea is a reverse-osmosis pump that can convert toxic river water into drinkable water for rural farming communities. 1.2 billion people worldwide lack safe drinking water, according to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
