Swansea Creative Focus Advent Calendar
Day Eleven: 11/12/2019
From today there are 20 days to 2020.
Twenty days to the beginning of a new decade.
What do you want the new era to be, for yourself and your community?
What’s your 2020 vision?
Swansea has both vision and momentum. Helping to drive the city forward, Swansea Business Improvement District (BID) has invested more than £6 billion in the local economy since its formation in 2006. A leadership group drawn from the public, private and non-profit sectors continuously draws positive attention to existing success stories and paves the way for more.
What fuels these success stories? First and foremost, a motivated, educated workforce. Over one third of Swansea’s working population are qualified to NVQ Level 4 and above, making this one of the top 30 cities in the UK in terms of proportion of skilled recruits. Two highly regarded universities produce an annual supply of job-ready graduates and potential entrepreneurs. And Swansea BID is instrumental in making these talented people want to stay and build careers on the South West Wales coast, fulfilling their remit of making the city a better place to shop, study, stay, visit and do business.
In recent weeks Swansea BID has sent out the most positive message possible with the decision to significantly expand its workforce. A new City Host Team is being created to signpost local attractions to Swansea visitors. Almost five million people visit Swansea every year, generating revenue close to half a billion pounds for the local economy. Serviced occupancy rates in hotels and B&Bs continue to rise year on year and are notably higher than the national average for Wales. The evidence paints a clear picture; this is a vibrant, attractive city both for residents and visitors, so let’s be sure we all make the most of it. In the words of Swansea BID Chief Executive, Russell Greenslade:
“Swansea City Centre is going through hugely exciting times and we want to ensure visitors get the most out of their time here by enjoying the best possible experience”
That’s a 2020 vision we can all support.
